  1. I have a VERY ticked off friend. He has had his dogs going nuts for a few months, and could not figure out why. He was out looking for felled trees for this winter heating, and he spotted a lady wandering around on his wooded property. He asked her what she was doing there... Long story short.... He removed the cache, called the police and found out his rights.

WHY do people put these caches on private land without permission? This only gives this fun aftertime a bad name.

I told him all about it, and he understands the idea... but complains about people who go out anddrive all day just looking for these things when gas prices are outrageous. I see his point....

I go out on the weekends... with MAYBE 2 or 3 to find... all in a close area. I do not goaround looking all over a 3 county area looking for as many as I canin one day.

I guess all I am asking or saying is... please respect landowners rights... or this hobby will go to the wayside real fast.

First point. Absolutley right, nobody should place a cache on private land and the Geocaching community ought to be able to sensibly police itself to ensure these sort of problems are reported and dealt with as quickly as possible. I guess unless you post the cache details then it is difficult to assess how this came about in this instance.

Second point. Don't agree. People travel all over the world pursuing pastimes they enjoy so why not drive for a couple of hours and visit lots of different places and go on a fantastic hike, in a new area, experiencing different countryside. Sometimes you will go for the site itself and do a few caches whilst visiting or sometimes you will go for the cache and (hopefully) find a new area which you enjoy. The more stops you do the more interesting the day (hopefully) as long as you have done a bit of research first.

  2. I'd though about placing a clip lock box in a replica Mallard (or similar water bird)attached to a chain or wire and floating it out on a secluded part of a pond/lake where the finder would have to spot it and then pull it in.

  3. As an avid follower of 'Svengate' it is obvious that he is passionate about Geocaching and has some fantastic ideas about cache placement/containers and how to 'play the game'. His heart appears to be in the right place but often it is firmly on his sleeve. Follow the EMcache forum to get a feel of how much he loves Geo-caching.

At some point the universe will change and I predict that a future 'game' is played by cyber geo-cachers where amazing finds are discovered via satelite links and and following virtual passages on other planets etc etc. Someone will be yhe new pioneer and maybe it won't be Groundspeak.

Good luck to him. I enjoyed the footage and I feel it inspires good geocaching.

  4. As we were searching GZ for a local cache my youngest found a diamond about the size of a pea in the grass. He was adamant it was real so I humoured him by telling him we would take it to show his mum when we got home so she could have a look. When we examined it at home it started to dawn on us that it did seem very realistic so I agreed to take him to the local jewellers to confirm it wasn't real. I started to sweat a bit when the jeweller examined it with his eye glass and he couldnt make up his mind. He fetched his boss and they decided that it warranted setting up the diamond checking machine where they send an electronic signal through the item to check that its real. They anounced that a diamond of this size could be worth in excess of £10,000 so by this time the kids were on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately it turned out to be a very realistic fake but it almost turned into our most 'valuable' find while caching.

  5. I find my kids really useful for the following;

    - Putting down holes

    - Lowering in to ditches

    - Sending under bridges

    - Looking over barriers/guard rails.road signs (I tell them to pretend to be being sick)

    - Lifting on to walls/trees

    - Rummaging through hedges/undergrowth

The kids are not necessarily stealthy about these tasks but it is far less suspicious than a grown up doing it!!

    Sometimes they even enjoy it.

  6. I wonder if one of you clever folk can explain this one…

A few days I had a found-it log on one of my caches that mentioned the log book being soaked through.

The container was one of those nifty little decon units that are perfectly waterproof if shut properly, so I assumed someone had left the lid ajar. No worries, these things happen. Yesterday, therefore, we set out with a new logbook, some kitchen roll for mopping out, and a handful of fresh swag, to give the cache a little TLC (and close the lid :) )

When we got to GZ, the cache was no longer where we had hidden it (a nook in the tree that fitted the container like a glove), so we widened our search, and my other half eventually proclaimed that he had found it. He held it up with a puzzled look on his face, and we both said in stereo “that’s not our cache??!!”

It was an entirely different container – a cylindrical plastic thing that looked like a big bolt, with a rather nifty handsprayed camo paint job, and one of those nice official Groundspeak stickers on it (that looked good as new). This wouldn’t fit into our original hidey hole hence it had moved.

I thought maybe someone had DNF’d my cache and dropped this one in its place to get the smiley (as I know that happens sometimes) – but no, on opening it up we found my original hand made log book (now soaked through and ruined :( ), about half an inch of water, and some swag that I remember seeing in the (original) cache last time I paid it a maintenance visit. So they must have found the other cache to obtain the logbook and swag bits.

The replacement container has a loose screw top and no rubber seal of any kind and was clearly not waterproof. So we have disabled the cache temporarily until we can get back out there with a replacement container.

I’ve been back through all the logs (online and in the wet logbook) and there is no mention of a container swap.

So – why did someone swap it??? I’m genuinely puzzled.

Those decon boxes are tough little cookies, so I’d be surprised if it was damaged, and if someone did replace a damaged container you’d think they would mention that on their log? Or a previous finder might have mentioned the damage?

I thought perhaps that the swapper was just after nicking themself a nice container, but decon boxes aren’t that expensive/desirable are they?, and they had put a lot of effort into the replacement container with the nice paint job and the GC.com sticker (those things aren’t cheap) – so that theory doesn’t really hold water (like their cache box!)

So, who can solve this little mystery for me?

(in the meantime, I’m having a good hunt around at home for another decon box, I’m sure I have one somewhere!)

My only theory is that another cacher saw your container and thought 'hey, thats just the type/size of container I need for my cache/series' and decided to swap it for the ready prepared container they had in their bag which they may even have already tried out and realised it didnt do the job.

A bit cynical I know but I cant think of another reason. If you want to take it further why not post a picture of it on the forum as somebody may recognise it from another placement although take care as witch hunts may cause other problems.

  7. your GPS (and pen) you couldn't do without when caching? Bare minimum? Obviously, apart from legs and common sense!

In other words, if you could only take 1 other item on a trip, what would it be?

Now... I have done without a GPS before and my most recent find was signed with a stick and mud paste (again) so I can do without a pen. Although legs would appear to be a given, I did actually complete a cache in Coventry last month by sliding down a bank on my stomach and then crawling to GZ but I suppose I did need my legs to get to the area in the first place. Common sense???.. I rarely take this.

Eyes...I think we often take our ability to see very much for granted.

  8. We've never done any night caching...only when the light was fading.

Anyway as winter is approaching (boooo!) and there was a series published last night we thought we'd give it a go. I had some reservations as they are all nanos with a 4 difficulty rating mostly in hedgerows.....also with some very cryptic hints (not "behind the second post" etc).

We gave up after number 3 with stings/scratches etc etc and hadn't found any :(

So any hints about doing it in the dark, is it more enjoyable/easier looking for large caches? Anything we need to get first?

Otherwise we might just jump into the nearest thorn bush down the road!! :(

    Carrots

  9. Hopefully they will log the TB within the next 48 hours however if they dont I am sure a polite e-mail to them explaining that you are waiting to log picking it up will prompt them.

  10. PS, a quick uestion. Are forum posters that know the whole history of forum debates considered 'elitist'.

Not at all. Just more intellegent.

That jibe only hurts when you can spell intelligent but lets stay on topic.

I am happy with my PM and will be renewing it again this year, in fact I've just noticed it is due next week.

  11. Are you saying that PM's are snobbish?

I think the correct word is "elitist"

    *runs and hides*

Definition - Elite, Elitist etc..... 'a select body, the best part of society, aristocracy'.

I became a premium member for 2 reasons

1 - To add favourites purely to give recognition to as many caches as possible where they (IMHO) are good quality, interesting etc etc etc,

2- to be able to do a local series virtually on my doorstep that I really enjoyed.

Hardly elitist, try joining a golf club.

dfx was poking a bit of fun. B)

trying doing a forum search for "elitist" and see if you can find a rather belaboured, somewhat infamous thread, basically the same rant as this one re: premium member only caches.

i was going to actually post a link to it

Having just read (skimmed) through those previous threads I think I will revert to challenging the accusation of being 'Snobbish' and we will see how that goes.

  13. We've been geocaching since year III, and have spent many hours and miles loving this sport. Lately, I have found myself getting irritated with the tendency toward complexity into which Geocaching has evolved. The sport used to be a simple, free, fun sport open to everyone who had a gps and the desire to use it. The latest recent-cache list, which prompted my mini-rant, includes SEVEN caches placed by the same 'cacher within less than a mile (spaced barely the allowed limit apart!)---and all open only to Premium Members. I'm wondering if this kind of exclusivity irritates anyone else... Has Geocaching created some kind of "Us and Them" snobbish competition?

I think you need to be a bit more specific about your gripe.

I find Geocaching to be a simple, free, fun sport open to everyone with a GPS.

You have highlighted the word 'SEVEN'. Nothing wrong with 7 caches. Are they in a nice place, are they well presented, have you actually done them?

Spaced barely the allowed limit apart. - Why not, great for small children.

...only open to Premium Members. Why not? That is the CO's choice and your choice to spend $30 a year (merely cents a day) for something you enjoy.

Are you saying that PM's are snobbish? Seems a bit of a harsh accusation for $30.

No, the above doesn't irritate me. Whingers do though.

  14. You can only politely explain the suggested method for logging but at the end of the day on line logging is up to them.

The position regarding the TB is a little bit different and you may like to alert the owner of the TB to the issue so they can contact the cacher that has picked it up and not logged it. Hopefully they will respond to some advice re the protocol re the TB.

  15. Finally a DNF has been registered on one of these caches.

Assuming it is a wind up (jury still out at the moment) I wonder if this is something that has occurred before? A little worrying if bogus cache co-ordinates take unsuspecting cachers somewhere dangerous/unsuitable.

  16. What if you DNF because it was muggled? Then when you do find it, it is exactly where you did not find it the first time. If it had been there, I would have found it the first time.

    I'm thinking new log.

I don't think the reason for the DNF matters. You did not look at the correct spot, or if it is not there, you did not find it, so it's a DNF log. Finding it later doesn't mean you did not DNF it the last time.

So far no one has suggested that editing / deleting the DNF log is the way to go. This is a highly unnatural state of being for the forums. Can someone disagree with the majority opinion before the forums implode?

I think you should be able to delete your DNF entry completely as you have now found it.
