  1. Besides the price and latest info, whats the difference? I know that MG v4 has been around for a long time, but as far as functions, what all am I getting for 140.00 for a new CN vs a used copy of MG v4 for around 60 on ebay? In other words what all would I miss out on buying MG4? This is for my 60cs. Thanks

You may not be limited to v4 if you want MG autorouting. I am autorouting with MG North America 7 and a Legend CX.

Rough first-draft webpage on the topic here:

    http://www.mousetrap.net/~mouse/gps/MGautorouting.html

If you have multiple GPSr or intend to buy newer maps (and sell your older, unused maps) then it is also important that MG does not consume locking codes and CS/CN does.

  2. Right now I am using Easy GPS for loading the waypoints into my 60CX. I have never used GSAK. What is the difference and is one better that the other? I know that with the GSAK there can be a price to pay so you don't get the nag message and Easy GPS is free. Besides that is there a difference?

Broadly speaking EasyGPS is for generic waypoint management and GSAK is for geocache management. Here are the benefits of using GSAK:

    http://www.gsak.net/help/hs1000.htm

I use EasyGPS to move waypoints in/out of my gps receivers, and gpx2html to generate .html files for the paperless fun that awaits.

    http://www.fizzymagic.net/Geocaching/gpx2html/gpx2html.html

Warning: GSAK-bashing follows. Members of the Cult of GSAK are forewarned to avert their eyes. :-)

GSAK is well-loved, and many people have registered it. I found the GSAK interface maddening, completely counterintuitive and bizarre. I kept coming back to it, seeing if more saddle time helped. It didn't so I uninstalled it. I wouldn't use it if they paid *me* $20 to use it. I'm serious.

I tell you this because if you install GSAK and immediately start beating your head against the wall, it's not you. It's GSAK. But don't let me scare you off it; many people are very happy with it.

  3. I am able to download my .gpx files from GC.com, import them to GSAK and load my GPS all without Windoze. Life is good.

But do you use any maps such as Topo or City Navigator?? You're going to need windows for that

Why would you need windoze for that (at least for serial units)?

sendmap20 runs on linux. I use MapSource as little as possible, even on my windoze boxen.

Over time the wine users may start having more success running MapSource under wine. For more info, bookmark this one and check back every once in a while:

  4. Not a taker anywhere? Someone has got to have an old 3.02 version just collecting dust.

I have the software on my desktop but now need it for a laptop and cannot find the disks.

If you get desperate you can copy the data over to the laptop and use sendmap to send maptiles to your GPSr.

  5. My solution is the autorouting maps (City Navigator, in your case) along with Roads and Recreation for the rural areas.

MetroGuide can also autoroute in the GPSr if the maps are uploaded with sendmap20 (just a vanilla upload, no tricks). Doing that right now in my Venture CX. Works great.

Some "Find" indexing functionality does get lost unless you perform a more complex Mapsource/sendmap dance, but if he's going down the path of rolling his own topo he could likely handle the indexing hacks. :-)

  6. I have never had an issue with having lock on roads turned on while geocaching. When I get close to a cache I always change my gps from follow road to off road. Maybe this automatically disable the lock on road option.

It would be nice if the GPSr would change this mode automagically when one reaches the end of the on-road route while caching. And would go from battery saver to normal.

  7. Thanks for the info on V4. Sounds like that is actually a better program than the later ones minus any new updates on roads.

Right, assuming autorouting is a priority and one does not want to use 3rd-party utilities like sendmap.

I don't know how this is viewed, legally, but is it "wrong" to let someone borrow a copy of the program and download it? Then return it? Since used cd's are being sold, and there isn't an activation code, I am guessing that it is o.k.?.?.?

My understanding is that one must delete one's mapsets/backups before selling one's old MetroGuide. This would preclude things like sharing a copy among friends.

  8. HI!

I am taking a trip next weekend out of state to Northern Missouri and would really like to upgrade my map on my 60cs for a little additional help.

I would like to find someone that has an older version (5,6, or 7) for a descent price. Really cheap, is prefered! :D This trip is really strapping me for cash, that is the reason for looking for one of the older versions.

If someone does have one, and could accept paypal as payment, I would greatly appreciate the help. Only catch is, I would really need it sent off tomorrow morning. That way I could get it in, and uploaded before I have to go. This trip came abruptly.

    Thanks!

The MG series is plentiful on eBay. I usually buy new from amazon and used from eBay. Don't overlook MG 4.x, as it's the last one that autoroutes when uploaded through MapSource.

In MG NA v.7 (my current default mapset) the entire state is about 59MB, which I think is larger than the mem on your 60cs.

The northern part of the state is closer to 35MB. The filenames associated with that mapset would be something like:

    00144316.img

    00144317.img

    00144319.img

    00144320.img

    00144350.img

    00144353.img

    00144361.img

    00144362.img

    00144365.img

    00144380.img

    00144381.img

    00144393.img

    00144394.img

    00144409.img

    00144410.img

    00144411.img

    00144412.img

    00144413.img

    00144414.img

    00144415.img

    00144416.img

    00144417.img

    00144420.img

    00144421.img

    00144424.img

If you were to get MGNA7 in time for your trip and upload those with Sendmap20 the 60cs would autoroute using the MetroGuide maptiles (yes, even the non-4.xx MG version).

  9. I think I may have just read my problem.... have it on "stick to road" and I should turn that off when doing roadside caches.. right?

Yes, I think that's it. I think I saw a setting somewhere in my CX that automated the change between off- and on-road based on arbitrary distance, but haven't had enough play time with the GPSr/manual to find it again.

  10. Is it possible to download maps that are not from Garmin Software onto my Garmin? If yes, is there a process or something?

    Thanks!! :D

    Yes, it is possible.*

    http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/maplist.php

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=sendmap20

    That should get you started.**

    fm

    * assuming you have a garmin that accepts maps, a cable, and a computing device of some kind.

** or will reveal that you really had a different question in mind. Which is frequently the case when such questions are asked.

  11. I think it's probably more along the line of 'if we start suggesting home remedies somebody is going to complain we steered them wrong when they super glue the unit to a table top".

Not just complain, but demand a new (or upgraded) unit for their "pain and suffering". Doing tech support is a *constant* reminder that no good deed goes unpunished.

  12. I only need it for caching, so the maps are just a waste of money.

You can probably get a used yellow eTrex w/cable for about $60 in the garage sale forum if you are patient. Maybe $100 for a used legend w/cable that could also take maps if you change your mind (and many do).

Then use freeware easygps and hit the caches.

  13. Well.... is there another way of checking this?

To go and open each map one by one is possible, in theory, at least. Topo Canada has 7,317 img files. I can't see myself opening every single one until I find what I need.

Hunting for the right map tile is kinda like geocaching. :-)

You can load them up in the graphical sendmap20 view and it will tell you the file name and it's name (city and state in the case of the MetroGuide I'm looking at).

    http://www.mousetrap.net/~mouse/images/gps/sendmap20.png

    I don't think I'd load all 7k at once....

or you can open up the .tdb in gpsmapedit and hover the mouse over the tile in question. You can't see my cursor hovering here because it's a linux box with a VNC-like app looking at a Windows box captured by a... never mind. You'll get the idea.

    http://www.mousetrap.net/~mouse/images/gps/gpsmapedit.png

I didn't inline them because they are kinda big.

I am sure there are better, easier, smarter ways. Someone will chime in.

  14. Why your dreaming of the future make sure to add a cell phone and a mp3 player so we can also enjoy our favorite toons while caching about.

That's what your Treo is for. :-)

I picked up a cable to connect the Treo+Legend and have been able to move waypoints back and forth. THere's a sendmap for palm but I have been unable to send maps to the gps from teh palm so far.

  15. I just learned of the new version and am in the process of getting it to install it. Thanks for pointing this out to me.

    Keep on searching.

Here is another great program. You can combine all of those loc files into one file to open into easygps, mapsource. Saves you the time of opening each and dragging into those programs.

    http://www.factsfacts.com/geocachingsoft/ThotsUtilities.htm

And of course you could use gpsbabel to *really* get mean on the multiple files: dedupe, filter by distance, and about 200 million other things.

  16.

It had no version information on the listing, so it could be outdated

Since it was on DVD it is either 7 or 8. At that price it is prolly 7.

    New for last year, IIRC.

The Legend C (without an X) will also auto-route, which the OP has, but not with Metroguide. Hence, if I were the OP, I'd personally buy CN.

And, as a previous poster notes, Metroguide can be encouraged to send its autorouting information to an autorouting GPSr (and I don't mean the 4.01 version). But only if yer a "geodude", or some kind of "Autorouting MetroGuide Wizard". ("Paging Dr. Google. Paging Dr. Google.") :-)

The lower pricepoint, absence of locks hoop-jumping, and the smaller tilesizes make MG a winner for me.

  17. I just broke the Palm IIIx that I was using for paperless caching and was looking on ebay for a cheap replacement. There are many used PDA/Smartphones with Palm OS for sale cheap.

Would I be able to use one of these as just a PDA without activating the phone? I can get a color display and more memory in a used smartphone for about the same money of a used b&w pda if so.

On the treo 600 at least the phone and pda functions are seperate. Plus you'd have an emergency phone (911).

You could spend a coupla extra bucks and get an unlocked version, because once you start using a smartphone I think you may dump your regular phone. :-) With an unlocked phone you can slam in your SIM and go, no activation required. If you are currently rocking a GSM phone (with a SIM card) at least get a smartphone for your current carrier. Won't have to pay for unlocked that way.

  18. I have tried g-mail, yahoo, hot mail and excite with no luck.

Your ISP cannot stop attachments from being sent to web-based email (like gmail, etc). They are not in that loop and have no control.

If you can't get your PQ attachments from gmail/yahoo/etc then there is a different problem at play.

  19. Hi..as a newbie to this forum, any forum in fact, I am reminded of Jean-Paul Satre's observation, when I read the replies to topics

Ahh, the existential angst of the newbie first feeling the heideggerian thrown-ness, the Da-Sein of the forums. Soon we will be killfiling trolls among the sand dunes. There is, indeed, no exit.

The gps points its compass arrow to the four cardinal directions repeatedly until the batteries die...

  20. The note may have been unsubtle, but perceiving it (and referring to it here) as an attack is at least 50% of the problem.

back on fidonet, the rules were something like:

    "Do not be annoying" and

    "Do not be easily annoyed".

This credo reminds me that drama requires 2+ players.
