  1. Basemap is the preloaded minimal mapset. MetroGuide is more detailed than topo so higher in the hierarchy and therefore turning off Topo could not reveal MG (it's the other way around). If you try to load too much to your card MapSource will, in fact, warn you. You may want to google for something like "mapsource blue crosshatching".
  2. It is highly consistent. As M corrected noted, you are being bitten by map hierarchy. Only the highest-ranking map is shown when they overlap.
  3. It is useful to know if there are impassable (or difficult) terrain features between ones current location and the cache.
  4. I have submitted Ticket ID: OUY-555190 on this matter. If anyone wants to see the "you must agree" problem, see the screenshot at: http://tinyurl.com/38mqqu It shows me logged into GC, "you must agree" and no PQs. If I were to agree now my PQs would re-appear and immediately email to me. The last time I received a weekly PQ was in late December. I only realized they were missing when my never-failing GC subscription fee notice was mailed.
  5. Dunno, but it's happened 2-3 times over the past 6mons. Most recently about a half hour ago, after which it immediately emailed me two out of three of my regularl Friday PQs. It bugged me enough that I came over here looking for posts that would indicate if it's happening to others or just me. Here is the flow of events. * PQs flow normally * PQs stop coming, but I don't realize it * I realize it * log into GC under my fratermus username. * click on My Account, then click on Build PQ link * get the blank PQ page, and You Must Agree language * I agree and they start working again It's happened again if anyone at GC.com wants to look. PQs quit coming and I log into my PW page: "you must agree" splash. I will wait for a while to see if any developer wants to look at it before I agree to the splash yet again. Like I have mentioned before; GC cannot keep my PQ coming consistently, but they are fully capable of billing me monthly. That functionality has never stumbled....
  6. So the .gpx-stored tracks on the card contains the timestamps? Neat. I've never looked at them.
  7. Get the DVD unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise.
  8. The eTrex H is less than $100 on the street.
  9. 2600 is just about the industry standard for NiMH AA these days. The completely normal blisterpack I bought at wal-mart yesterday were 2650.
  10. I assume you cache with only a yellow eTrex and a #2 pencil?
  11. You probably couldn't load all of topo, regardless.
  12. The eee already has a linux OS on it. gpsbabel does many things; the script is for ease of use and acts as a wrapper for this one function. I use it to upload to my foretrex201 because that way I don't have to remember the details.
  13. WINE and Garmin / gps stuff traditionally does not get along very well. gpsbabel is trivial once you get it set up. I run it from a shell script (split across lines for legibility): The shell script does more tricks but that's how I send files to the foretrex.
  14. gpsbabel runs on linux and I think it will talk over the usb. might be as simple as "aptitude install gpsbabel" and then read the manpage. I use it with serial on my linux box, but haven't tried usb.
  15. Topo is on the card as \Garmin\gmapsupp.img (off the top of my head). There is a finite amount of internal space for waypoints. Used to be 500 on many units, now 1000. If you are managing 100s of waypoints, I really do recommended loading them as Custom POI instead. To quote Red90: Load them with the Garmin POI Loader.
  16. I do not believe that the HCX has any internal map memory.
  17. The card holds mapdata and Custom POI. Waypoints are stored in the unit itself. If you are hitting max waypoint limits try converting some to POI using the Garmin POI Loader. NB: the gps will *write* track logs to the card in .gpx format if you tell it to, but will not read .gpx from the card.
  18. > Is a GPSr supplied with country specific firmware? The basemap will be the most obvious difference. > 1. If I bought a unit in US, would it work OK in Australia? yes > 2. Can I take a GPSr to another country and expect it to work Ok there? yes
  19. They are waypoints first and geocaches second (and only by virtue of their icon). They belong there.
  20. Geocaching mode is not dependant on (or even necessarily related to) maps that may or map not be loaded on the GPS. It works on waypoints, not maps. The GPS points to the cache. This makes it useful for geocaching. The Geocaching mode helps you by remembering what you find and pulling up the next one. That's about it. Beyond that, if you want to see topographical detail you can buy topo maps. If you want street routing you can buy CN or similar. The basemap is free and minimal; all of the US fits in the unit's internal memory. This is quite a feat, and does entail some tradeoffs (like minimal detail) I have written some notes on one's first GPS that may help. Perhaps your decision now is "do I return the Legend for something simpler, or pony up for maps". The legend HCX without maps is not necessarily the best bang-for-buck proposition.
  21. I think Xandros is a debian-based distro: aptitude install gpsbabel
  22. What is it that you want to know? Garmin's description of the model is pretty good. At the risk of seeming pedantic, a good place to start is the manual that was packed with the GPS. If you didn't get one with the GPS then grab the online pdf.
  23. I did say I bought one. I have used it and like it. It is older and functional. Buy the eMap and part it out if you must. Just the 8MB memory would likely bring $20 on eBay by itself. If you wait long enough he will sell it to someone else and the decision will be made for you.
  24. eMap for $20 is a fine deal, particularly with the mount (which is MSRP $20 by itself). I bought one for $20 at a thrift store and store it in the wife's car glovebox. The proprietary map memory IS expensive but you don't need it. The unit does come with some kind of rudimentary basemap of the US if I remember correctly. Once you get to the sale off-handedly ask them if they still have the PC serial cable (if they bought one). Remember to bat your eyes innocently. :-)
