It's a Frequently Asked Question: see this answer and the one right under it.
I think you'll prefer entering data with some freeware and a cable.
-
I use the 60cx with routing-enabled MetroGuide NAv8 for that kind of duty.
-
You are only limited by the size of the card.
And number of map segments.
-
I just got my first GPS a Garmin Legend C. I got it on eBay and I don't have a USB cable for it yet. Is there any way to enter coordinates without the cable?
Mark the current coord then edit it.
BTW, the cable is a normal miniUSB. You probably have one laying around the house somewhere. Many cellphones and cameras use them.

I know the “H” is for higher sensitivity under canopy but is it more accurate than the Cx?
In those circumstances where the CX has lost lock and the HCX has retained lock, I offer a qualified "yes". That definitely happens, but is probably not the question you are asking.
In normal receiving circumstances I do not find my HS receiver and more accurate than non-HS.

Ok,just recieved my metroguide v5,how do I find out what region I am in so I can send maps to my blue legend for my state
MapSource has a selector tool that allows you to mark maptiles for upload, then upload.
Blue legend doesn't autoroute, btw. I assume you already know this. So turn off "upload routing data" or whatever if you are using a hacked version that shows that feature.

Locked maps (like CN) must have an unlock for every GPS it is loaded onto.
-
mea culpa, you are correct. I was reading too fast.
There are three different names that are important here:
1. the *.gdb mapset definittion in mapource. Not really a map, but contains the list of the map tiles to be combined (and other info). You can have many filenames containing the same data if you want, but the computer's OS will not allow files of the same name in the same directory. More than one uploadable mapset cannot exist in a gdb.*
2. the name of the tile embedded in the data on your DVD or HD. This is what shows up in the map config in the GPS. Can't control this unless you hack with mapedit or similar.
3. The name of the resulting file that you upload to the GPSr sd card. You can rename this but it won't work. :-)
The name of the .gdb mapset will only be visible from Mapsource or a directlory listing.

*well, you could put two in there and deselect maptiles I guess.

I'm trying to figure out the file basics in Mapsource (Topo US 08). After searching, it appears I can only send one map set to my Vista HCX, otherwise the new map set overwrites the old.
Send them at the same time.

Interesting. Maybe there's a stray out there not associated with that icon?
If it doesn't reveal itself at some point, you might want to download all waypoints from the GPS and inspect them that way. If there's not a stray then I dunno. Maybe a recent firmware version added an option to always increment? Dunno. But let us know if you figger it out.

How come I can use the maps on my Cobra to go right to it? Only the Garmin maps are way off here on a major interstate. I have 3 GPS recievers and the garmin is the one I will use for trac-logs...Nothing else- especially close cache hunting or placing - it really sucks at that.
I can't tell if you are willfully misunderstanding, or a troll. Either way, I will leave it to others to play in this sand box.
-
Are you saying you have no (zero, none) auto-named waypoints and it is still incrementing?
My guess is there was (for example), 1-5, you deleted #1, and it is still seeing #5 and incrementing from there.
-
Garmin base maps have proved to me to be highly inacurate. If they can't even get the position of a major interstate highway right how do you expect their other maps to be any better?
Please post your own cartography where you have stuffed a large continent into a few MB of space.
If it is an improvement, I will load it over the Garmin basemap.

I am trying to put my City Select 2008 Europe NT
onto my Colarado it takes about 1 hour max on the GPSmap76CSx
It has run for 24 hours ans til says 493 hours and 59 minutes
What happens if you copy the .IMG over from the other card instead of regenerating it? Does that work, or do you have to regenerate with the new serial/unlock?
The maximum size currently supported is 2gb. Please ensure that this is not high speed or high capacity type card.
So, what capacity card are you using?
-
In Garmin-land, the chip type to look for is "High Sensitivity". The exact chip will vary, but Garmin uses that blanket term.
The eTrex H should fit your bill nicely, and should be cheap via mailorder.

I have found a really good deal on a Garmin through Amazon. It's really through a merchant who is through Amazon which makes me a little nervous.
I buy most of my stuff off Amazon (and buy.com) but I usually don't do Amazon resellers because I want the Super Saver shipping.
All my experiences with Amazon directly have been excellent. I did buy from a reseller off Amazon once and I didn't like that experience. Anecdotal rather than stastically-valid evidence, but that's what I have to offer...
-
Right but then why doesn't it do it every time a map set is remade. It is as if whatever it did before, it has somehow held in internal memory.
Every time I upload a changed mapset it does it on my 60cx and i3. On small mapsets it happens so quickly that it might not be noticeable.
Does it on MetroGuide, which is unlocked, if that means anything to anyone.
The index, or whatever it is, could be on the card with an H attribute (and so be invisible to casual inspection),
-
I notice that when a mapset is loaded to a card and powered up that the first time you see a loading progress incator along the bottom of the screen before it boots.
I've always assumed it was an index or checksum of some kind being calculated.

Is this routable base map very detailed, or is it the same kind of lame base map that came on the 60CSx which will only get you from city to city only on major highways, or will it route you through smaller arterial roads?
Well, as a basemap it's got about the same about of detail as a basemap. The entire planet in 30MB or whatever, so don't expect much.
I think this is a screenshot from my testing last year:
-
Were you able to use that with any other maps, or was it the basemap only?
IIRC, I put it on a spare microSD to simplify testing. I think there were other maps on the card but I did the test-routing around Paris, France where I knew I had no maps. I'll repeat the test next time I redo the maps on the 60cx.
-
I have a 201 and like it a lot.
Note that you can use a cable to up/download waypoints.
It does have normal reception which will suffer under tree canopies and similar. My 201 was $70 NIB off eBay. If you hunt under canopies or similar it really might be worth ponying up for one of the new writstwatch formfactor High-Sensitivity receivers like the 205/305/405.

Hey I figured out a neat trick: how to get a free routeable worldwide basemap for the Colorado (at least it works on the 400T)!
I did it last year on a 60cx; works fine.
-
But in driving to the cache area does the etrexh show you when to turn on roads so you can get to the area of the cache?
The arrow points toward the cache. That's it.
-
I dont see how you could with out a mapping one.
Etrex is fine.
The arrow points toward the cache. The rest is gravy.

As DW pointed out, maps go on the card. This means Topo will go on the card. Data cards are exceptionally cheap for 1 or 2GB sizes.
I've collected some FAQ that may or may not help, and also a rant on picking one's first GPS.
