  1. Great pictures!

But tell us what cameras you use and settings. How do you get these wonderful pictures. Do you use flash or natural sunlight? What kind of background for those coins that stand alone? I can't seem to get a decent picture of our personal coin with the purple glitter. :anibad:

We have a canon digital SLR. All our photos are taken in daytime near the patio door but we use the flash too. Most were taken on a brown piece of fabric. I am not sure of the camera settings though.

Thanks... I too have a Canon Digital SLR. But don't seem to get the clear details as your pictures. I guess I'll have to take more pictures and experiment with different settings.

Do you use the micro setting?

  3.

Could they put their finds on a spread sheet or word document with the page and cache name then email that to you? This could make your life a little easier.

    Lori :anitongue:

That is definitely the preferred way. I want the participants to have what ever option they can use. Dick does not have Excel, but I do. If they email me an Excel file, I can print it and scan it back into an email to Dick. If the participants do not have Excel, both Dick and I have MS Word, so that will work as well.

I am liking Dicks idea of creating a watchlist and just do a copy and paste thing into the body of an email, and then shoot that off to us. My main concern with that, is I know I use my watchlist primarily, not bookmark lists, so there would be alot of other caches included, and cluttering things up. Will have to explore that option a bit further, but for now the Excel and MS Word options are perfectly acceptable.

If I know exactly what was needed on an excel or word document, I could come up with a form page for both. This way people would only need to put in there info. You could put it a link on the page.

  4. This must be still going as there has been no post that there was a drawing for the coin. I know it has been 7 month, but finally got my info and pictures together at one time!

So anyway.... I was in the Birch Bay area last August while hubby was crabbing. Thought I would spend the day looking for Historical Markers.

I started out by making the trip into Canada, out of Canada, back into Canada and back to the USA ground. My mission was to locate the Pt. Roberts Historical Marker. I had my birth certificate, drivers license, car insurance out and ready as I made my way across the borders. I also had my Historical Marker Booklet with me to show what I was attempting to do. Pt Roberts had been reported missing in the Challenge. So I pulled up to the USA Pt Roberts border and laid out all my paperwork and then asked the kind border crossing officer if he had ever seen a marker like the picture in the book. He looked at the booklet and then stood back and I was sure he was going to say he had never seen it. He looked at me then pointed his finger across my hood and said, "You mean that?" Well that tells you how observant I am. I asked if I could park in their parking lot. No problem. Go my GPS out and started to take readings and pictures. Then this kind officer came over and asked if I would like my picture taken with the marker. What a great start for the day.

I then moved on to Bellingham looking for the Old Telegraph Road. This area has been developed into a major shopping area and appartments. Found the road and stopped to talk to some residents, but no one recalled a marker.

Since that was a bust I moved on to look for the Bellingham Bay marker. I followed Donovan St from the water to the free way. When I came to a dead end I stopped to talk to a nice couple that lived there. They didn't remember a marker, but they showed me what was left of the gigantic boulder that had once stood in the middle of the North and South I5 lanes. We came to the conclussion that when they made and relocated I5 to 4 lanes that it was removed. All that was left was a pile of bigger than big pile of rocks. Hummmmm.... This could make a great cache site! As long as the neighbors didn't object.

Ok... There was plenty of light left for the day. So I decided to hit WA 524 and look for the Mt. Baker Marker. The booklet said it was missing, but what the heck. Nothing better to do! I was really enjoying myself with the beautiful country in this area. The booklet said it was between Maple Falls and Glacier, but it also said it had been temporarily removed. As I cruised along I pasted the marker. I had to do put the ponies in a sliding skid to stop to turn around. There it was standing tall along side the road over looking the river.

So 2 out of 4 isn't to bad. Let say I was glad to have saved up some extra money for gas for these adventures.

    Pt. Roberts - Found

    Mt. Baker - Found :anibad:

Old Telegraph Road - Missing

    Bellingham Bay - Missing :)

  5. We were at many of the caches you found yesterday, today. We only found 7 caches but they were in 7 different maps. We now have 11 maps. We all have different caches to get. The real power cachers who go after every cache that is published are probably hurting for a while.

I am looking on ways of verifying the non PM cache list. I understand that their Watchlist is limited. Does anyone know how many and can they put their map completion caches on a watchlist and send it to me to verify. If they copy their watchlist and paste it to a non-GC e-mail and send it to me it would lessen the load of verifying as I could just click on the cache and verify the map. This may be a Ground Speak No No. Thanks Dick

  6. How many participants would you expect at this event?

The first year we had 29 logged as attending. Last year 55. With the Missoula CM being on the same weekend. I am thinking some where between that this year. But it could be more!

Forgot to mention that some that logged as attending were family groups. But as long as each person put in thier entry fee everyone could play. (Caching family of 5 entered 5 entry fees and got 5 prizes but logged as one attending.)

  7. I would like to suggest either Island Lake State Park or Illahee State Park, provided there is a large enough covered area and parking suitable for the needs of the activity.

As for either, you might check out the required use fees.

At Island Lake there is a fully enclosed building(at the South end) that might be available. There are no campsites within this park. However, there is a kids' playground nearby, not to mention a lake with a sandy beach area for swimming.

At Illahee Park there is also a kids' playground and there are camping available. The waterfront here is not all that good for swimming, but it is great for boaters. However, all picnic structures are open to the weather.

I remember checking out Illahee State Park and went back to see way I had dismissed it. Here is the info from the web page. Check out the last sentence.

Illahee SP: The park provides three reservable kitchen shelters with electricity and one available first-come, first-served, plus 90 additional unsheltered picnic sites. To reserve kitchen shelters, call the park. Picnic sites are available first-come, first-served. Day-use groups of 20 or more are required to register and pay the applicable fees.

    Here is

Island Lake County Park: Lake access, swimming area, fishing pier, walking trails, picnic areas, picnic shelter, playground, restrooms, community center. Rate for community center - $35.00 per hour or $420.00 per day. It says it has a picnic Shelter. So I'll have to check that out. It's been awhile since we have visited the park.

Would there be a place in Silverdale? I remember you saying something about maybe the GPR being up north this year  . Not too many more places to camp besides the ones you already mentioned. Just thinking out loud here :anibad:

That's why we are asking thoughts on these parks. We would lean more for a park that provides camping sites if there is enought interest in over night camping. If we have to, we'll pitch a canopy and do without electricity for the event.

It's been a long cold winter! I am excited about going camping in my little trailer. But with the cost of gas I'll be staying close to my home area. Maybe a long weekend up in the NW part of the state. Lots of caches waiting for us up there and down 101. Then there is the Shelton area... Boy I am getting ahead of myself!

I know that the Missoula CM is scheduled for this same weekend. We are assuming that there will be quite a few cachers on the West side of the State that will not be able to make the long treck over to MT. We hope our event will soothe thier woos for not being able to go to the CM.

  8. We have attentively set this years GeoPoker Run 3 for Saturday June 28th. It's still over 4 months away but we can submit it in 6 weeks!

The Tribe has been looking for a base site for this years Run. We have used Jarstad Park for the last two and thought it was time to move to another location. We took a day and ran up North. We though that maybe a park with camping would go over good for anyone coming from out of town that want to do some extra caching.

Kitsap Memorial State Park: Nice park. The park has one kitchen shelter with electricity and one without, plus four sheltered and 20 unsheltered picnic tables. The Caterer's Kitchen shelter has a brick fireplace, cooking tops and barbecue grills and may be reserved. If it isn't reserved we might get it as first-come, first-served. Other facilities are first-come, first-served. The park has a 73-car parking capacity. You can view the Canal from the park and there are trails to the beach. Quite a few camping sites.

Salsbury Kitsap County Park: Saltwater beach access, boat launch, fishing pier, restrooms, picnic shelter, playground and picnic areas. Once again we take the chance on someone reserving the shelter. No other covered shelters. This site has a nice lawn and view of the canal. One minor down fall... The bathrooms are in the shelter. So the public would be walking through at times. No camping sites.

Port Gamble: The site has a GREAT view of the water. No electricity or water. There are bathrooms a short walk away. It is very tempting but maybe not practical for our event.

Manchester State Park: Nice view. One large reservable picnic shelter and two small picnic shelters available first-come, first-served. The reservable shelter is the old brick "torpedo warehouse" If it isn't reserved we might get it as first-come, first-served.

Fay Bainbridge State Park: We didn't check this one out yet. The State Park web site doesn't give a map of the camping area. There are two kitchen shelters with electricity, plus 11 sheltered and 80 unsheltered picnic tables. One shelter is available by reservation. It will accommodate groups of up to 50 people. Camping is a first-come, first-served park. No reservations are needed. We have only been there once doing the Thunderbird Track Cache and ate our lunch. Great view of the Sound since the park is at water level. Not sure where the camping sites or shelters are. Will have to take a run up there to look the park over.

We would like to get a little input from you. Which location would you vote for? If camping is available, would you be interested in camping over night? If we don't get a base site with electricity & water, what are your thoughts about a cold dish potluck? There could be BBQs available for roasting hot dogs and bugers.

Also.... Travis gave us heads up that he was thinking of same weekend for the Missoula Cache Machine.

Don't be shy... We want to hear all the Good, Bad and Ugly comments!

    Happy Caching

  9. We have been asked to let everyone know that there can not be any sales of coins or anything else at this event being that the church has a non-profit statis.

This does not mean that you can't sell any of your coins. All we ask is that you make any cash transactions off the property. They opened the building to us, so I hope we can honor their one and only request.

  10. There will be an event coin. We know that we are pushing it but we will be keeping our fingers crossed that they get here before the event. Picture will follow soon. This coin will be non-trackable and about the same size as last years. The Tribe is excited at seeing all our caching friends and hope to meet many new ones.

  11. :D

This event sounds like it would be a ton of fun. Then I noticed its in Washington, 2094.1 miles from my home coordinates. Yikes!

In between the drizzle and rain, WE DO HAVE FUN  up over here :D:D:D

Hey!!! You forgot to mention all the snow we have been getting. Ole Siam loves it when it snows. He gets to play with his snow plow at all hour of the night. But life does come with knocks! That is "Knocking down mail boxes and trash cans!" :D He tries really hard to be careful, but sometimes it happens. But it is well worth it to most of those that wake up and find the road clear or parking lot of the local store or Post Office clear!

OK... Here is the draft of the Event Coin :D

  12. :D Are you ready for a day of Geo Bling Bling??? :P

I know that there are a whole lot of addicted geocoin collectors out there. So here is your chance to show off your collection, do some trading and discovering. Here is a link to the GC Coinapalooza '08' page.

We know that we are pushing it but we will be keeping our fingers crossed that they get here before the event. Picture will follow soon. This coin will be non-trackable and about the same size as last years. Anyone interested in the coin can email me at Lummieh@gmail.com. EVENT: Coinapaloosa '08' and Potluck

PLACE: 11070 Old Frontier Rd NW, LDS Church

    DATE: Saturday, March 8, 2008

    TIME: Noon to 4pm????

WHAT IS IT?: A place for trading geocoins.

It is time to bring all your GeoBling-Bling for fellow GeoCoinaholics to oooooh and aaaaah over. This will be a very casual gathering to mingle with fellow geocoin collectors. If you want to discover a coin, always ask the owner of the coin if you may do so.

  14. Visit this my Webshot Photo Album of a couple ghost towns in Montana we visited near the town of Philipsburgh. Didn't get any pictures of all the great buildings in Philipsburgh. So we hope to return there and take more time looking around. Now that I GeoCache. I am looking forward to include it with our travels next time.

The book "Ghost Towns of the Northwest" by Norman D. Weis is a good book to start with. It covers Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Wyoming. Try searching the internet. That is where I started before I got the book. There is a lot of information out there on the web.

Good luck and have fun.

  15. I understand the TB's, but now I'm really confused about how coins work.

Adding more confusion--- I read a few more posts and I'm more confused.. Are trackable coins collected too?

If you find a coin in a cache that has been activated treat it as a TB. Moving it along from cache to cache.

If you find a coin in a cache that is unactivated. Trade for it equally. You then can activated and use it as a TB. Or you can just put it in your collection for everyone to drool over. Or activate it and keep it for your collection so others then can discover it.

Welcome to the world of GeoCoins. :P

  16. I wanted to inform coin collectors that one of our GeoPoker Run 2 coins is listed on the e_ _ _ auction site. The only thing right in the auction title is the name of the coin. :(

I really don't care what a current owner does with our coins after recieving it. But I do not like them being misrepesented! I have contacted the seller and hope that they correct the information.

  17. Personally my first choice is that the coin should reflect the cacher(s). Thier personal sig item. Secondly if it isn't a personal coin it has to be caching related. There are to many coins that are called geocoins but have nothing to do with the sport of caching.

The average round geocoins I have are about 1.5" X 1/8" thick. What ever minter you work with will help you with your design, style and metals. There is usually no extra cost for minting one design of coin in different metals. LE is a small percentage of the coins made. Like 5, 10 or 25 out of a 100 made. If they are trackable and/or with an icon. Then the number of minted coins are usually higher. One last thing... I personally like to trade. The cost of purchasing other geocoins is getting to expensive for me.

    Good luck
