  1. Seems there is flexibility for all kinds of cachers, all kinds of caches, in all kinds of places (assuming everything is done legally and such). I don't go for the trinkets much now. Mostly go for the location and finding a new area and learning about it. There are so many caches out there, that one can pick and choose. I figure a micro listing is going to be a bit harder, then a family tupperware in a local park, with a lower difficulty rating. I generally migrate towards a more difficult one or something off the ground, and have a very hard time finding them. That is really ok since the getting out part is the big thing for me. I really like the exercise factor and a mile out is as natural as breathing. I don't have a lot of finds, and if I get one or two on a trip and get to interesting spots, that is a really good day. Maybe as we get experience, we want harder finds, or something different, and look for them, be it a mico or whatever different. And yet there is still the need for the basic tupperware with the goodies. I like signed coins or something special from a cacher. Don't bother much with the other stuff as much. I like going 3-d when looking for a cache. Man are they hard, when not sure if its on the ground, or up a tree. I would rather find a fake rock, or phony pine cone, or something special then the family type cache. And I am changing all my caches to those types over time. Some big containers, and some nasty nano's. The thing all this make me thing about is, getting the cache page description as clear as possible so the seacher knows what they are in for. So, I will try to update my cache pages accordingly.
  2. Oh, Of course many of these can be had with a small group carpooling in their 4-wheel or all wheel drive vechicles. We just did this with the South Jersey Geocachers group and it was a big success. You're welcome to join on the next event. Another ps, Plenty of Dippen/swiming spots along the way if you need to cool off. tom
  3. Pine Barrens hiking caches: I just looked at one or two of the hiker series for the first time. So forgive me if not getting you correctly, but this may be pretty close to what you want. There can be several routes in several areas. Atsion, Batsto, Bryne (Labanon). All with many caches along trails. You may find that many of the caches in the pines are naturally in order of hiking trails. A lot are mine so please excuse. Along with those of many others. Atsion Route: If you were to generally follow the yellow trial from Atsion at RT 206 down to Batsto on Rt 542, you can pick up quite a number of caches along the way. Start with several around Atsion and the recreation lake. Recycled Bridge, Whisper, PS I love you, Lasanga, History of Atsion, Log em, etc. That would keep one quite busy for a day, especially if picking a few more in the general area. Now for an inline hike, start with Crappy Cache, walk south down rt206 across the mullica, to History of Atsion, Logem and Leavem, then circle back and over the RR tracks to the other side of the Mullica. That will take you a bit. Then follow the Yellow trail down along quaker bridge road. Pick up Cranberry which is very nice, but a side detour. Dam-it on the trail, (Night Hike down moose lane, and Ghosts of the Pines) if u decide to go in the dark), then Girlwatcher 3, to Son of Prospector bob, Canoe 1 & 2 (land). Then to continue over Constable Bridge to, 5 Little Bridges, and to Magnetic Mercury, and Grave of Joe Mulliner on the way back to Batsto. Don't get me wrong in that this entire route would be very agreesive. You could do several making a nice circular loop in the Atsion area, then the same from the Batsto area. Alloff road on trails and sandy roads of the pines. You could leave a car at the Atsion Ranger Station and another at Batsto Ranger station and do the entire yellow trail down from Atsion to Batsto in one day picking the ones up immediately on the path. Or, for extended fun, Backpack down from Atsion, staying over night at the canoe/backpacker only campsite along the mullica about half way down. Then finish off the next day taking those mentioned and even more. One could rack up many caches on these routes. So, not neccessarily a one-to-one hiker series, pretty darn close. If interested, I could make more clearly defined lists along clearly defined routes/trails, for any of the areas mentioned. One thing for sure is that the sandy roads of the pines make excellent hiking trails and routes, and there's plenty of caches for the pickin. And plenty of things to see. Batsto route, Bryne route, Belleplain route, Many others, Get a few together and I will take you and introduce you to the area and the trails and for the lenght of trip you desire. I'd suggest a light one to start along one of the cool rivers of the pines (for the august heat), and many others in Sept and on forward. tneigel
  4. Pretty impressive. Thats a lot of caching and a lot of logging to do.. Well done. Now get back to work. Funs over. ps, I drank your beer. burp
  5. I have more info on our unofficial little SJGeocaching local site (http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/SJGeocaching). Please feel free to stop by. And thanks so much for your responses. Will be trying to keep track of the general count as it gets closer. May have to purchase a special extended parking permit. No big deal.
  6. I found out that it can't be posted before 90 days of the event. Sort of makes sense. Guess I missed that. We have 10 possible stay overs already and several others coming to the day event. Should be fun. Thats why I'm going...
  7. We finally did the big push. Put in at Batsto lake, and paddled all the way upstream to Quaker Bridge - 3 1/2 hours. Then a bit over 2 hours back down. Wow, what an adventure. Next time we are going to try about quaker bridge. as soon as my hand stops hurting... Would like to hear more about the tital area below Mt Holly on the Rancocas. You may be already responding to the chat room on our SJ site.
  8. Well, I've done almost all of these things. I used to respect them highly and log every one and put it in another cache, thinking that was the correct way. Then I saw several building up in caches or Floopy's 3 at a time. I would exchange one. But then I saw those being raided. I was thinking Hey..... I exchanged one, then others just keep them. By then I guess I messed up my George account or lost it. After a bit of a pause, I created a new account, but lost interest in logging them. Starting passing them by and just writing in the log. I felt guilty for not spending them, and guilty if I took one. Then I figured, if I am not logging the item, why take it at all. Then settling down to taking one occassionally and moving it on to another cache without logging. I'll roll it up tight and stick it in a new micro. Always seem to have one in my geo bag at any one time. Maybe, maybe I have seen one in circulation outside of geocaching. If I took 3 for spending over the years it was a lot. I took a few, left a trade and even stated in the log I would use the money for new cache hides. But I didn't do much of that and just pass them on. Even when I wanted to spend one, I would just end up spending my own dollar and keeping the george. I keep foreign money when I can find it. One item only from a cache. But never saved georges. Maybe when I come across one, I will laminate it to a TB (and be arrested or something). So, where's george? He is around and that is fine with me. I like it, and as a citizen, have no problem with writing that on the bill. Pretty passive sport. Never log them anymore, too many other caching things on my plate. Maybe if I got something for logging say, fifty of them (a free dollar), I would have the drive to start logging them again. But then again, if I just kept the fifty of them, .... hummm. (nah...) Its good there are a variety of ways. It was good to hear that I should actually spend the bugger too. Its good they should be replaced with something of equal value. Sometimes its not. I should log it if I take it... I know... If I think of all the Floopy Georges I could have had..... I guess when I think about it, I'd still be here doing the same thing. I now deface quarters with my T sign, and starting to collect any other ones (only one) I can find. I embedded three into plastic along with a TB. Maybe I'll do that with a George as well. (But I'll log it first.)
  9. I just submitted it for approval so should be up in a few days if I did it right. It is in South Jersey on Rt 347 (47) by Belleplain state park. Right next to the East Creek lake. Take the Parkway down to exit 25 and go west young man. Or down rt 55. More complete directions...... Oh, I forgot. GPS.... 39.13.310/74.53.082 But seriously, South Jersey, no traffic in Nov. Nice time, big fire, fun and games, or just ole plain relax'en.
  10. I would like to start an event at the Belleplain Cabin on the East Creek in South Jersey for Nov13. I already have this reservered. Advice welcomed as this is my first event. Thinking something like 10/11-3pm as the central time. Some of us are staying over at the cabin and there is room for a few more. The cabin is hugh, and has plenty of off street private parking. East Creek lake with a side, and dock all to ourselves. Picnic tables, big field in the back, etc. Nice. I am bringing my kayaks and bikes and plan to have fun, and I want you to have fun as well! All are welcome in the cabin during the event to enjoy the fireplace and sit in the big living room and plan and talk caching etc. We'll probably do the cooking outside for the event with the usual dogs, chicken, veg stuff. People can bring some stuff too. I hope to see many of you there, match names with faces, and make new friends. -------Details on the cabin for those staying over------------------- The cabin is hugh of course with a full kitchen, fireplace, bunk rooms for up to 30, but will probably keep down to 12 people for the overnight. For that night only, the two separate bunk rooms (with their own baths) are sectioned off as men and womens side, if necessary. I'll be there Friday night as well, but it will be more casual then for people that wish to stay over that night. I have more details about the cabin over night if you are interested. 11. Same problem lately on my Sports Trac Pro. I would leave it on the top of the kayak while out in the sun. After an hour, I would loose satelites as well. It wouldn't clear up even after I got in the car. It told me I was at work. It was horrible, horrible. Took it home and left the batteries out for an hour. Seems to be ok.
  12. I agree. I always go off season times. I had always gone Sunday/Monday in Spring and Fall. Pretty much assuring few if anyone else. Spring/Summer time on Saturday night at the Mullica overnight is probably crowed. Don't like camping in the heat either. A cool night during the week now would probably be fine. I do like the Mullica especially since its a 16 mile trek with that campground in between. The batsto is broken up into many more sub trips/sections so I just never think of camping out on that one. Of course, I live close now. Back when I lived in Ocean Township and way back in North Jersey, it would have been a big outing.
  13. Here is the end of my series so far. Will be discovering new places and see what happens. Oswego: Went to Oswego today and it was better then last time. Paddled around the lake and much farther upstream this time. Total paddle distance out was 1.8 miles. And with a little searching around and the side spur, it was 5 miles total, and we must have spent 3 1/2 hours. Just go to Oswego lake and put in and go. The water level was great. We still have to do the shuttle from Oswego to Harrisville lake soon. Goshen Pond - Upper Mullica By the Atsion Group campsite. Was real nice and quiet. Went around the pond and over a mile upstream. Just could not get any good numbers locked in to place a cache on the water. Was disapointed because it was a very clear day. Seeing the moon and the sun both clearly is always a good thing. Another 2 hours so we did a good day. I will try again to put that cache out there. Next time we will try to shuttle from the Atsion Ave/Jackson Rd Bridge down. Down is easy. Wading River Report The water in several places seem pretty low. I am surprised since the other rivers are so good. The dam by my Girl Watcher cache on Rt 563 is sticking out of the water. So, I won't be trying this one until the water level picks up. I will try to check other spots, but it was low by Hawkins Bridge as well, but a cache is there! Rancocas River We recently went from behind Burlington County College to Pemberton on the North Branch, for a short ride and it was ok. There is a dam there to portage but no biggie. Next time we will go much further down. You can even paddle upstream about 1/2 mile from behind the college to extend the trip. Going to place a cache on the river closer to Rt 206 very soon. Will put in at historic Smithville Village (close to rt 38 and rt 206). We did this a week or so ago and easily paddled upstream for over a mile or two. Next time we will go from the College all the way down to the Smithville stop. Rancocas South Branch. We put in at Marne Ave rt 537 but I don't think the spot was liget. Then paddled upstream easily through lumberton. Next time we will put in at Lumberton, and paddle back past Marne Ave to the Fireside Bar (a little bit further west of rt 537)
  14. Oswego and Harrisville Paddle Trips: I am going out there in a few minutes so I will update this later today. But you can do a couple of hours paddling around Oswego Lake and up river and up the tributary. Several land and water caches in easy access. And a beautiful relatively unknown free swimming areas. Fantastic. Both Oswego and Harrisville lake are regular car friendly! No 4 wheel needed (unless you go into the woods). You can go down river from there on the Oswego to Harrisville lake. Very nice and easy, but water can be low in the dryiest times. (I check with the local livery places by phone.) Its certainly ok as of this writing even tho a little low. We just did the Harrisville lake section and spent several hours, went up stream, and had a ball. See ya later, off to get wet and get a good paddling!
  15. Ed, I want to go too! PS I had to put the Mullica, Batsto, and Oswego Trips under the Mullica River descriptions so look in that related thread!
  16. Batsto River Trips: NOTE: Most if not all of these trips are available through the many rental places. Bell Heaven Canoe Rentals for example, but call for info, and reserve. Much more info on these trips in books and on the web, but ask if you have specific questions and I do my best. River Description Most of this river is big, wide, and accessible even in lower water levels. Trips can be from as far upstream as Hampton Furnace, all the way down to Batsto Lake. Many different putin/takeout spots for many various trips. Many land and water caches along the way. See my water caches for maps. You can even do the Jessie Evans Mansion cache with a short walk from the river. Upstream trips in several spots: Batsto Lake non-shuttle trip Drive up Batsto-QuakerBridge Sandy Road from the west end of the fence at Batsto Village on Rt 542. Park at one of the pullovers at the North End of the Lake. Stay away from the first two pull overs (large, and ruff) because this is where the canoe liverys take out. You can paddle around the entire lake from there, then go upstream. (Recommend going in the afternoon for upstream trips after the downstream rush). I was able to paddle up past martha from there. That is a long way so you can do several hours easily on this one. Several water caches out there (more pending). My favorite non-shuttle paddle trip! Downstream: Never took Hampton Furnance down stream, but a very common trip. Do this one in higher water. You can park at the put in spot (in the open field before doing the Hampton Furnace cache). You can go downstream to Quaker Bridge for a 3/4 hour trip. You need to leave a 4 wheeler at Quaker Bridge. You can also go downstream from Quaker Bridge and take out at the north end of Batsto Lake as described above. I would even find a spot a bit further upstream to put in like the Lower Forge area (4 wheel drive!). That would make a very nice trip.
  17. Shorter Trips Above and Below Main Section Above Rt 206 - more tricky - harder to get too You can put in from the Jackson Rd/Atsion Ave Bridge on the sandy roads. The river is smaller and has more obstructions. Better to do this in High water, not dry times. You can go down to the Recycled Bridge (coords at that cache) where you can leave your car for this shorter trip (going over 3 small beaver dams - fun). You could go past the bridge, out to Atsion Lake, then cross over (ackward) rt206 and back down the Main section of the Mullica. This is more advanced only if you know what to do. Atsion Lake recreation area has a charge during summer seasons, and limited hours. Off season for a month or so either side is free, but open unpredictably. What I do in this section is to drive my 4wheeler to the back of the Goshen Pond Group Campsite, past the campsite limit. You can put in there at Goshen Pond and paddle around and even go up river. There is a land cache nearby up there and I'll have a water cache there very soon. This is good for 2 hours of playing around. South of Batsto Area on the Mullica. You can go from the Mullica River access area on rt 542 (1/4 west of Batsto Village) down river to Crowleys landing (about 2 road miles east of Batsto on rt 542). This is a car shuttle so make sure Crowleys Landing day area will be open. The river gets wider and wider, so stay clear of the channel and larger boats at the lower section of this trip. This will give you a couple of hours of paddling. Not that long. I've done this at night in the moonlight with the outdoors club.
  18. Mullica River Main Section and Longer Trip: The main paddling area for this river is from Atsion Ranger Station (Rt 206) to Pleasent Mills (Batsto) on Rt 542. For Atsion putin, take the first sandy road south of the river on Rt 206, pass the little log house. Drive down 200 yards and you will see the putin spot by the Old Cotton mill (many caches about before you go). The take out parking spot is about 1/4 mile west of Batsto Entrance on the left side. Look for the sign. Note, you pass the Batsto river and pass the wooden fence at the end of the Batsto visitor area. This is a long way, 16 miles. Many paddle and camp over at the paddle/hiker only camping area half way down, then finish off the next day. You need a camping permit from Atsion or Batsto Ranger station. Some go all the way, but be ready for a long trip 6 /12 paddling. For an overnight, always leave your cars in the Atsion or Batsto Ranger stations (and let them know). Its only a 1/4 walk at the end to get the car, but thats ok. This is best done on a Sunday-Monday because most people are off the river as you are going. The campground limit is 114 people, but could fill up fast with boyscouts and paddlers. So reserve the camp permit before you go in busy seasons. I always go off season anyway so I have the river and campground almost to myself. Primitive pit toilets only. Shorter trip on that section of the Mullica. If you have a 4wheeler or know the roads (for a reg car), you can drive down quaker bridge road 1/3 of the way and put in for a day trip. (still need another car at the end). You can do the same by leaving a car at the take out spot at the end. For instance you can leave your 4wheeler/all wheel driver vehicle at Constable Bridge. Note: You can drive to the overnight water campground as the area 1 mile above and below are vehicle restricted, to keep it private. I can give more exacting coordinates if needed. But you can get these by viewing the caches along the river. There are other sections above Atsion See next reply
  19. Ah, where to go, what to do. I can help. I'm still discovering all the spots so I'll have continued updates. The three rivers I know best are the Mullica, Batsto, and Oswego. You can canoe down river and need to shuttle or put in and go upstream and back. I will do a new reply for each description so I don't get logged off.
  20. My goals keep changing over time. But what stays true is that caching shows me new areas all the time. It's a real kick to find out about some wonderful spot that has been right under my nose and never knew about it. The main variable goal to keep creating new types of caches (in new areas). Into water and night caches now. I am not sure about doing a scuba cache, but I can put one under water. Bingo, a new idea in the works.
  21. Time to take the boat out (canoe, kayak, or inner tube) and go for some of the water or paddle-too caches in the NJ Pine Barrens. There have been a few out there with little activity. Now there are several more just beggin to be had. Pretty much easy to get to, and more in production. Several like the Mullica and Batsto River have several land cache immediately adjacent to water, designed for you to get out and stretch the legs but be within easy distance. Now is the time. You can do several caches in one trip. In most places you can paddle upstream to obtain them, or with a 4-wheeler get right in the area before getting wet.
  22. Ever hear that saying? I am sure you have. People look like their dogs and vice versa. Couples look alike. Barney looks like Mick Jagger, etc. Well, it occured to me that this must also be true about geocachers (myself as well). Everytime I click on a cache picture, and see the geocacher, they all look similar. In fact, they look just like gps units. Really, ever notice some people like a sportstrak pro's, some look like a Garmin 12's, etc. I've even seen one poor guy that looked like a PDA. Oh man! Amazing that everyone has buttons on their faces too. Why is that? Can you emagine what people must think outside of geocaching, especially at a geo picnic. "Oh honey, those poor people. All of their heads look like radios or something." So, I say, when you upload a picture to the cache page. Make it a picture of a real persons face. We still may look like gps units, but we don't have to advertise it. Happy Thanksgiving, I'm going down to Shennedoah to go after a few. Tom Turkey
  23. Wow. I didn't realize there were so many fellow un-employed geocachers. Its great, isn't it! Oops, sorry Mopar. tneigel (only found when caught)
  24. Congradulation Fro! Here is his log from "One Armed Bandit." See the notes after the list. This cache wasn't the best or the hardest or whatever. It was, however, the cache that expanded geocaching for me. I looked and could not find it. I recall being disappointed. When I got home I looked at the cache page (I used to print them . . . hee hee) and it dawned on me that I needed to use another dimension. Sure enough, I went back and found it right where I had been frustrated. Tom, like the cache, you have added another dimension to this game. You placed caching on the map in South Jersey. Thank you, Fro.
