  1. I have no problem with their suggestion to players to archive moribund caches that they can't really commit to anymore. It's sound advice. If I have a problem it would only be the idea of tying it to "favourite" points in some way. Partly for this reason, I think the "moderators" (or whatever) at Groundspeak would probably want to not set anything to auto-disable or auto-archive. Maybe give the bosses a notification, if a cache has been inactive for 2+ years, then they can investigate by looking it up, then by contacting the CO, and so on. I imagine that for the extremely remote and hard-terrain caches, there has to be some leeway given - and quite frankly I can't imagine a computer program doing it automatically would have the necessary amount of common sense. The same could go for trackables - a way to "flag" trackables that have not moved / logged any activity for 1 or 2 years (and are not in the hands of the TO). Then someone can contact a CO to check if the flagged TB is in their cache, and/or message the TO to declare their TB officially missing in action. Basically, IMHO the only automatic thing should be flagging long-term inactive caches or TB's for "follow-up". There has to be some gradient of accessibility considered too, a sort of pent-up "excess demand" in an area; you wouldn't want to create a system that auto-deletes lonely wilderness caches - which would basically turn them into either archaeological artifacts or litter.
  2. OK, I am new to the hobby so bear with me here... Looking at a map of my local area*, I can find what caches TB's supposedly are in fairly easily, but the problem is in actuality, maybe 1/2 or 2/3 of the time, the trackable listed in the inventory is not actually in there. Usually in such caches, there are no TB's. When I log such a cache, I usually state that the listed TB's are not there, but beyond that, how does one rectify all the missing TB's, so that the caches no longer have false readings in their inventories? Other than sending a message to the TB owner, is there a way to report a TB as "missing", or can only an owner (of either the TB or the cache) do that? More importantly, is there a point to a cacher trying to do so? It would be nice to "clean up" / rectify erroneous listings, and cast missing TB's into some sort of limbo, but I also get the feeling that if there was a simple and effective solution to false listings of missing TBs, it would already be common practice. What are your thoughts on this? My n00b self needs to know; perhaps I am OCD because false inventory counts seem to bother me more than they should. *I use cGeo most of the time when I'm out in the field, so your experiences may vary from mine.
  3. Popularity? I'm just part of the Basic member proleteriat, not the Premium bourgeoisie, so I cannot favourite anything yet, and haven't placed any caches myself, but... Is there some automatic timetable of maintenance /checking in that must be done (like once a year minimum) by an owner? Or is it only based on receiving a "needs maintenance" or other notice which red-flags it? In terms of "cache health" & potential archiving, I hope that the bosses are taking into account that the wilderness caches might not be visited for a long time, even by their owners. I imagine they understand this, but yeah I have often wondered what happens to as cache with very sparse activity and whose owner has not been active for several years. (I also expect that part of Archiving etiquette would be to physically remove your cache, assuming it isn't already missing.) The local urban cache space is pretty much saturated, so I guess something needs to create a bit of turnover, so new members can have some placement fun too, but in the wilderness is another matter. Like I said, I have not placed any caches yet, but I am hoping to one day. And part of my plan is to not place it somewhere I would have trouble going back to if I needed to freshen it up.
  4. North Vancouver... also, this is my first forum post.
