Come on, guys... We should give all the proceeds to the US Army, that way they will have money to buy new ammo boxes, and then they will have to get rid of all their old ammo boxes, which of course we all know make great cache containers... To use them when logging a cache find, when you are typing in your log comments, look right above the comments field. You will see a smiley-face on a button. If you press this button, a window will come up showing you the "codes" to use to get different faces. They have to be enclosed in brackets [ ]. Geeze--- I rolled my eyes on this article too. Sounds like he wasn't too prepared. Also, what confused me was that he said he didn't know where he was, but he had a GPS in his hand? Um, I might be wrong here, but don't GPSr's tell you "exactly" (+- 15feet) where you are? I also thought it was funny how the article said, "He didn't know where his car was, but the Geocaching webpage knew where his car was". Sounds a bit "big brother" to me. I wish I had a webpage that told me where my car was. I wonder if this guy is gonna continue caching. And, I wonder if he'll mark the cache as found on the webpage. I would also ask if you can review the finished article before it is published. I would word it in a way that doesn't sound like, "I don't trust you journalist-type people and what you print..." though. But, like Team Kender mentioned, the media will print what they think will get the most attention, such as "burried treasure", "tromping through the woods", "GeoCaching was invented by Bill Clinton", "GeoCachers bitten by misquitos are spreading the West Nile Virus across the States," etc and leave out the good stuff such as CITO, it's a cheap hobby, it's fun and good for you, etc. Just my two cents... Zoltig- I agree with you. I had to call Garmin support and got great support from them. I decided to sell my Garmin GPS 12 to a coworker. I deleted all my waypoints off of it, showed her how it worked, etc. Then she looked at me and said, "Why does the date on it say 1836?" 1836?!?! I had no idea. I set it outside so it could get a good lock on the sat's, but no luck. Anyways, I called Garmin support and they had never heard of this problem. We tried a few things, but it didn't help. Finally, they gave me some funky codes and keypresses to "hack" the gps, and that finally did it. Basically, we did a "boot-to-the-head" reboot of the built-in software. Anyways, I thought they were very helpful and enjoyed answering my questions. Way to go Garmin! Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now.

DrMemory- Welcome to our insanity... Um, I mean, Sport! Here are a few things that may help you before you go out on your first cache hunt... 1. Check to make sure your GPS is set up to the WGS84 datum (this is what www.geocaching.com uses). Your GPSr instruction manual should talk about datums. 2. Check to make sure your gps is set to dd°mm.mmm (this is also how www.geocaching.com displays the coordinates. For example, 40°35.201) Again, your manual should talk about this. GPSr's can display the coordinates in many different ways. So, 40°35.201 is not the same location as 40°35'20" (ddmmss) 3. Always bring water on your hikes! You will be suprised that sometimes a simple hike may turn out to be a difficult hike, so always be prepared. I myself am guilty of not taking water on all my hikes and have regretted it many times. 4. Put extra tradable cache items in your pack before you leave. That way, you can put more than one item into a cache. I find it more fun to put something in and not taking anything out. That way, the next person who finds the cache has a better selection and may return the favor. 5. Most important, have fun! This is a great hobby/sport. Warning: Once you find your first cache, you will be hooked. There is no going back. Therapy is expensive... Cache on! Bradtal Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now.
