  1. This is a request from another new cacher.  Below is the message that he sent to me.  If you can help him out, please post it here.

Here is the jpg that I had in mind for my avatar or at least modifying it.  I got this someplace on the internet and I am sure it is copyrighted, so it will have to be modified somewhat.  I surely don't want to infringe on someone's copyright.

Since my id is the handle of Losel2, which losel means "Worthless person, loser, wasteful, or thriftless," perhaps he could make it with this guy pulling out his pocket or pockets out with his hand or hands, showing that there is nothing in them.  Or, just come up with his own idea.  Don't care.

I've been contacted again about this one, but am just not capable of being this artistic. Any takers?

  2. The difference is, Welch says to put it back where IT belongs - not where YOU think it should be.

But I'll agree with you in that putting a cache in an area proned to flooding where it will become just another piece of floating (or sinking) garbage is no different than pollution to me. I'd probably do exactly what you did the first time to avoid relocating someones cache, but also to prevent making the area the next CITO event to pick up all the washed away caches.

  3. Here is what I sent him:

"...If you can't play by the rules, please don't play the game.  ...You essentially stole from us and other cachers visiting our caches by taking all of the items out of our caches.  If this message makes you feel guilty, good, that was its intent. "

Clearly this guy was in the wrong, but I find your message to him to be far from diplomatic. Timberhawk's note was better. You're lucky you got as friendly of a response as you did.

It seems to me that his "lawyer"-ish response was only in defense of accusing him of stealing and asking him not to play anymore.

I'm in total agreement here. Yes, the guy did something that doesn't fit the norm, but it probably doesn't help much to chew him out like that. Don't forget that the people you p-off here and via email will likely be the same people you are going to be sitting with face-to-face at the next event cache. Why create bad blood?

  4. Why is it that dogs have a pill that stops all ticks from biting?  But we humans have nothing of the sort.

Most canine tick treatments don't stop them from biting. It just kills them or sterilizes them so the population in your yard drops. Then, there are fewer left to bite.

Do you really want a toxic insecticide pumping through your veins? Just from the sound the previous sentence, you know it will never get FDA approval for human use.

  5. There is a cache in my area that the last "Found It" log said, "Still a neat cache, but was highly visible from the public trail, so I took the liberty of hiding it a bit better (still at the same coordinates)." Every log entry after this was a DNF including my own!

  6. A horrible, but funny thing just happened a few hours ago. While searching for a cache in a public park near a lake, I did not find the cache in almost 30 minutes of searching and was beginning to think I entered the wrong coordinates into my GPS. When I stopped and checked, I had indeed entered the wrong coordinates by a few digits. But the horror story continues....

Now that I had the right coordinates, it took me to a nearby location not too far from the first. But still no cache. Instead, I did find a stash of some teenage boy's girly mags scattered all around where the GPS was zero'd out. So I still did not find the cache, but decided to help CITO the area and stacked up all the filth to deposit in the nearest bin on my way out of the park. As I was leaving the wooded area, I notice a group of people gathered near where I was parked just enjoying the park. Not remembering what I was carrying under my arms, I casually walk to my car and drove off to the nearest dumpster. Then it dawned on me that a bunch of people just saw a man walk out of the woods alone with a stack of girly magazines! That had to look pretty darn strange! And after all that, I STILL had to log a DNF!

  7. The GC.com maps are still acting up for me. I've even tried another computer and Firefox, but not change. Is everyone not still having this problem? Oddly, the "new" icon shows up and the TB icon along with multi-cache icons, but the traditional cache green icon does not until you "Identify" the caches.

  8. I've emailed cache owners three times so far asking for hints after I describe exactly where I've searched, how long, and after how many trips. After doing this, two of the three times the cacher owner went to verify that the cache still existed and reported back to me that it had been muggled and was now missing. Based on my description of how and where I've searched, they thought I should have found it. On the third, I was simply too "vertically" challenged to find the bison tube well above my line-of-sight. So for a generic hint.... look up!

  9. There is parcel of land that appears to have been originally purchased to be used as a golf and country club near where I live. Unfortunately, the Army Corps of Eng. raised the lake level 7 feet a few years ago and submerged much of this land and the area has since been undeveloped for the last 4 years. I've contacted our county appraisal district to find out who owns the above-water land and they can only give me the original business name and a P.O. box that no longer belongs to the original company. But this area with its partially paved entrace trail and large flat areas is PERFECT for some hiking caches. How much more do I need to do or what should my next step be in acquiring permission to place a cache in this area? This will be my first cache to hide, so I don't really know what approvers usually do in this situation where I am unable to contact the land owner for direct consent.

    Thanks!

  10. It's rather more like a car dealer selling what the buyer thinks is the 2004 model, but sometimes it turns out to be a 2005.

I see where you derive your logic, but assuming it IS 2005, wouldn't you expect to get the latest model? If I'm at a used car lot, sure. Then, I'd be shopping for 2004 or older models and if I came home with a 2005, I'd be thrilled!

But instead, I went retail and expect to get the latest and greatest OR pay a discounted price for the older. Any other technology, food, clothing, etc. in retail stores that is "older" than the current stuff is discounted. You buy day-old bread, you pay discount. You buy last-years Nike, you pay discount. You buy a 1.3 Megapixel digital camera, you pay discount (compared to when IT was the best around). If you bought day-old bread at full price because it was sold along side fresh bread, you'd probably be a little annoyed. Now multiple that feeling and the $$ by 100 and you get closer to my frustration.

My problem with Garmin is that the old model is being sold at the same stores in the same packaging and for the same price as the new model. In fact, the packaging of the guy who just got the v3.1 eTrex was copyright 2001 which is older than MY 2.14 eTrex's. There is NO way to tell if you are buying the new version with WAAS support, a 31 function Trip Computer, and an additional display screen OR the regular old version without these additional features.

I have not contacted Target yet. It was yesterday afternoon when I finally got to talk to a Garmin rep and just didn't have time to drive into town to go to Target, but I'll be sure to let you all know what happens.

  11. Well, it is confirmed. Garmin is shipping "new" basic yellow eTrex versions with WAAS support and firmware version 3.1. Another co-worker that I got hooked on Geocaching just picked up one of these from an online retailer and it has version 3.1 of the firmware. I feel totally ripped off by Garmin and I'm currently on hold for (19 minutes) so far waiting for their customer service people to pick up and tell me what my recourse should be.

To me this is basically the same thing as going to a car dealer who is selling a 2004 model as a new 2005 because the body-style didn't change.

    *** UPDATE ***

I just got off the phone with the Garmin rep who basically said I'm S.O.L. He says that unless the retailer is willing to exchange it for a newer model there is nothing they can do. They won't even consider a warrantly replacement for this type of situation. I've just been sold a sub-standard product disguised as a newer product and the manufacturer won't touch it. Well, I guess its time to see what Target's return policy is and start barking up that tree.
