  1. I have created a database on GSAK that keeps track of all the geocaches that I have found (over 500 and so can't be done with a single PQ) including those that have been archived. But I am having some trouble in figuring out how to get the most recent updates added in using pocket queries. I tried in the PQ to check the box "updated in the last week", but then this gives me an unwanted time restriction and will not update when checking the Always option. My caches are located worldwide, so I highlight the "None" option under States/Provinces. This PQ gives me the correct total number but does not give me the most recent logs. Is there a way I can do this without running over the limit of 500 for a PQ?
  2. I've completed this geocache and so no longer require any help. Thanks !!
  3. Bill Try MENU->MENU->'System'->ENTR->'Page Sequence->ENTR The sequence should be Satellite, Trip Computer, Map, Active Route, Compass, Main Menu. I've added Highway in after Active Route, but that is just a personal preference. Highlight '<Add Page>' ->ENTR to insert a page. Once a page is added, highlight it and press MENU, highlight 'Move'->ENTR to move the page where you want it. I hope this works. That worked great, Sputnik !! Thanks very much. Don't know how it got all screwed up from before. Bill
  4. Somehow I lost an important page when following the directions after a Go To command. I still get the upcoming turns and beeps. Before when I pressed page, I would get a list of turns. Now it has disappeared and I only get the compass page after pressing Page. What happened ? I probably need to reset some options.
  5. I'm looking for help with the Where's in a name? cache. Here I am in New Mexico looking for a fellow cacher in Finland. My username albuquerquebill translates into 25 deg. 28.78x min. and is close to Helsinki, Hollola, Jyväskylä, and Oulu. Also Rovaniemi in the far north where I did some fantastic XC skiing a few years ago at Enontekiö, Kilpisjärvi, and other spots north of the Arctic Circle.
  6. How is this list gathered ? Whenever I do a pocket query for locationless caches in one or more states, I get bunches of regular caches, too. I also notice in this list that several foreign countries are represented. Is the location of these "locationless" caches simply that of the person who logged the find wherever that happens to be ? Just discovered that I had not checked an important box on my queries. But in order to get a complete list, don't you have to ControlC every state in the list and then another with every country ?

  8. Yes, you are 100 % correct ! I was using a database without any waypoints. Now all works well with my comma delimited .txt file. But for some reason when I try to use the .csv file I get only latitudes correctly, longitudes are all zero, and my waypoint names are erased and replaced with a sequential numbering as default. Oh well, it was easy to change the input command to GPSBabel using a .txt instead of a .csv Thank you SO much for all your help on this matter. Bill
  9. Yes, you can do a GSAK custom export (File=>Export=>Custom) on this file to generate a GPX file GSAK can load. Syntax for the custom export commoand would be something like "C:\gsak\GPSBabel.exe" -i csv -f "C:\temp\bigfile.csv" -o gpx -F "c:\temp\bigfile.gpx" You will need to change this to correspond to your install folder of GSAK (mine is c:\gsak) but I hope you get the idea. When finished just load the file bigfile.gpx into GSAK Thanks, Clyde, but I must have the command wrong somewhere since I get an error message in the Custom Export which says "Cannot create file with zero waypoints". Here is my command line -- "D:\PROGRAM FILES\GSAK\GPSBabel.exe" -i csv -f "C:\temp\bigfile.csv" -o gpx -F "C:\temp\bigfile.gpx"
  10. My guess is becuase these aren't geocaches. He described the waypoints as "a long list of waypoints into my GPSmap 60 CS from a text file that I found on the internet". There are lists of waypoints on the internet that aren't geocaches and aren't available as PQ's. Yes, that's right. My list of waypoints simply marks various positions along a long distance footpath called the Lycian Way in southern Turkey. Thanks to all the responders. I will be trying the suggested software packages.
  11. I've heard from Robert Lipe about how to use GPSBabel to load in a long file of waypoints that I found on the internet. Originally, the file was in .txt format and I converted it into an Excel file with only 3 columns - name (up to 10 characters), latitude, and longitude. Can this be easily read directly by GSAK since GPSBabel is built "inside" ? Here is Robert Lipe's answer to my question --- If you can control the text output, just arrange to save it as comma delimited format in an order for something that GPSBabel already knows how to read. For example if you make the lines look like: 35.99627, -86.62012, Dive Bomber by JoGPS & family you'll find GPSBabel's 'csv' format will slurp it right up and then be able to write them in your choice of about 5 dozen formats. 12. I want to download a long list of waypoints into my GPSmap 60 CS from a text file that I found on the internet. I've also converted this into an Excel file. What is the easiest way and which software program (GSAK, EasyGPS, or another) to accomplish this task so that I don't have to enter hundreds of waypoints manually ?
  13. After some experimentation in trying to find geocaches near a proposed route, I now can create .mps files using MapSource and upload them successfully into the GSAK arc filter. I have noticed that the line segments sometimes do not capture a waypoint that is close to a planned route basically because there are not enough line segments produced by MapSource. This happens when I use the autorouting feature of MapSource. If instead I use the more time-consuming method of clicking along the route often enough to approximate the route adequately for my purposes, then upon reading this new file in GSAK and applying the arc filter, I can get exactly the waypoints I want along the route at any specified distance. Is there any way to interpolate among the existing line segments to produce a new set that is, for example, twice as dense, three times as dense, etc. ? Or does anyone know of a setting in MapSource itself that can increase the number of segments it produces when in the autorouting mode ? Another related problem I've noticed in that there is often a duplication of points which, for example, give you "crow flight" straight lines between your starting and end points of the route and sometimes other waypoints along the route. These seem to be grouped near the top of the list of arc line segments in the GSAK arc filter window and can easily be deleted to avoid spurious waypoint finds along these "crow path" routes. Is there a way to automate this procedure to eliminate duplicate points ?
  14. I'm not sure but I think the problem is solved when I use the EXPORT command in MapSource instead of the SAVE AS command. Don't ask me to explain, but the routes now seem to load every time in the Arc Filter !!
  15. Sorry, I first entered this in the GPS Units and Software area. I am hopelessly confused !! I have been trying to create a set of geocaches located along a proposed highway travel route between two destinations. I first create the driving route using MapSource and save an mps file on my hard drive as the help file in GSAK suggests. It ONLY includes the one route. Then when I try to use the filter option on a set of geocaches in one of my databases, sometimes I get an error that says Cannot open file GKAK\temp\arcin.txt and doen't load it. Other times it seems to work OK as long as the mps file is in my GSAK directory, but NOT when it is somewhere else like my Geocaching directory. Sometimes when I try a 2nd DIFFERENT mps route with the same database, and then use the arc filter, I get the SAME subset of geocaches even though the routes are totally different. This is really weird !! Any help would be appreciated.

  17. Thanks so much - it works like a charm ! I use Windows 98. Happy caching, Bill
  18. I have just become a registered user of GSAK but get a file error when I try to download waypoints to my 60 CS. I checked the box for USB. Do I have to set some other switch on the GPS ?
  19. Thanks very much for the picture and the mounting hints. I'll give the suction cup one more try this weekend before mailing it back to gpscity.com IF it's not too late !
  20. Against my better judgment, I ordered a Garmin Suction Mount for my 60CS and can't seem to get it to stick on my car's windshield. Does anyone have any suggestions ?
  21. I am planning a trip to France next month with my new 60CS. I love it here in the US. I bought the cheaper Metroguide Europe and decided againt the City Select Europe which costs almost $200 more but has no more street detail -- only the auto routing capability. I can determine a route to a restaurant on the PC. The question is how do I download this to my GPS ? Do I have to define a waypoint for each individual turn on the route -- this would be as a pedestrian? What happens when I get to Europe with only the restaurant defined as a waypoint ? Will I be able simply to use the Find function and get a route with a turn by turn description or will it only be a straight line route ? Since I didn't pay the extra money for the auto-routing capability, I expect that I would have to define each street turn in advance on my PC BEFORE downloading to the GPS. Which probably would not be worth the effort. But there may be something that I am missing in my understanding ! Bill
  22. While in the "Waypoint Data" (Don't know what title for the screen is) screen for the waypoint you would like to reposition, press Menu. "Reposition Here" is the bottom option, but is not displayed. you have to scroll up or down to see it.
  23. How can you "reposition waypoint", as is available on the Etrex models ? I used this when geocaching to relocate the position of my CAR each time before venturing out into the wilderness. I'm sure this must be easy to do on the 60CS, but it doesn't seem to appear as an option when I look at the Waypoint Menu options. Bill
