  1. quote:Originally posted by El Diablo: I'm going to crawl out on a limb here and make a statement. Locationless caches are bogus. This topic has been gone over many times in other discussions. Locationless caches are here, whether everyone likes it or not. True they are not a traditional geocaching activity, in fact they are the reverse of it (as Jeremy points out), but they are an activity closely related (sort of like letterboxing) that uses a GPS.
  2. quote:Originally posted by james f weisbeck kd7mxi terra utah: Sorry, It's really not appropriate to catalog places where people likely lost their lives One of the caches you listed is my 'Memorials - The Fallen'. The point of the cache is not that it's cool to find places where people have died, but to allow more people to be aware of the tragedies that have occured, not just in this country but all over the world. It is a way of educating people about parts of history that otherwise might not be told. Especially in the case of local history. As the saying goes those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it. It's my feeling that if the event was significant enough to warrent a memorial, then it is significant enough to share that part of history with everyone. If you REALLY feel that a cache like this should be archived, do you also feel that the memorials should be torn down? After all, they only serve to bring people to places where people lost their lives, don't they? You can't seriously be abdicating that we remove caches like the POW/MIA rememberance cache, are you? If you are, do you want the whole world to forget that people actually do die in this world and sometimes for reasons that are not what people would call natural causes? Are we supposed to just turn a blind eye to the tragedy in this world instead of learn from it? Grrr... you really hit a nerve on this one. OK, after reading KD7MXI's unapproved cache I calmed down a bit. I can see why he posted the message now. But that still doesn't change the fact that some places where people died (or even are just related to deaths as are some of the caches he pointed out) should be acceptable as caches. A blanket ban on anything that remotely deals with death would be stupid IMHO. As I said, if it's acceptable to place a memorial or whatever there, then I don't see a problem with a cache. I'll step down from my soapbox now... [This message was edited by Gloom on May 18, 2002 at 08:50 PM.]
  3. Around here it's not uncommon either. In addition to hunters dumping carcasses, lots of places near roads are deposits for road killed deer. Like Rye_and_Leigh said, once the bodys are there other animals get into it and spread the bones and other parts around. One cache in particular around here is right next to a dumping spot. When we went to go get it (first one's there) we spotted about 5 fresh kills (whole bodys) and plenty of skeletons. I wouldn't be too concerned about it if the only things you found were bones. If however you find freshly dead things that look like they're in the process of being eaten, I wouldn't stick around too long, especially with small children. -Gloom
  4. The new features are great! Just one note though, the milage on the search results doesn't seem to work right. I just did a search for 'Geospike' and it returned Geospike#1 showing 0 miles. Clicking on it's page shows it travelled 300 miles. Thanks for all your hard work, it's not unappreciated, [This message was edited by Gloom on May 18, 2002 at 07:48 PM.]

  6. At first I thought the gladware/ziplocs were the perfect cache container (cheap, hidable, easy) but I put one out a while ago and it didn't last a month before the lid was cracked. From now on I'll spend the extra $$ and get tupperware or similar. For those that are looking for relativly cheap containers the doller store here in town has tupperware style containers for a buck a piece. My first cache was in one of these and I haven't had any problems with it yet. Gloom
  7. If you know the waypoint (GCXXXX) of a cache but don't know the name or anything else, or just want a quick way to find it, on the search page you can enter the waypoint and be taken to that cache. Gloom
  8. Even though he didn't get the cache open and sign the log book, he did manage to find the cache and get close enough to touch it. Again, as makaio said, I feel that to log a cache you should sign the logbook, but there are certainly exceptions. He went through the hardest part, finding and getting to the cache but couldn't sign it. I can't say that I blame him. I probably wouldn't have even had the guts to climb the tree. -Gloom
  9. I have a couple of bugs out there and I'm just wondering what other people think. Two of my bugs have been in cachers hands for more than a month and at about that time I start to get anxious. Now don't get me wrong, I realize that bugs take time to move and I don't really care when they take a week or two (or more) to move, but once it gets up past a month or so with no movement and no contact from whoever has it I start to get nervous about it going missing. So, my question is: How long to you usually wait without any TB movement or contact from the person who has your TB before you attempt to contact the user to get them to move the bug on?
  10. That's 67 caches within a five mile radius of the center of my zip code. Which of course is the center of Klamath Falls. D'oh!! Was too tired to make even a simple calculation. That actually works out to less than 1 per square mile. Thanks kablooey for showing me the error of my ways. Just 'cause I know that there ARE a lot around here I did it again for a 1 mile radius and came up with 7.3 per square mile (23 in 1 mile radius). Not quite 13, but I'll take it. -Gloom [This message was edited by Gloom on May 06, 2002 at 05:36 PM.]

  12. quote:Originally posted by Zuckerruebensirup: I think we need to draw a clear line in the sand that Geocaching is a low impact activity. Even if this particular case wasn't "that" bad, I'm afraid it would influence others to push the envelope just a bit further (and then those in turn to do the same for the next ones)...pretty soon, we have people blatantly killing trees, and thinking it's ok. I totally agree. Lookingalone even states in his post that he would cut down a tree just to hide a cache... quote:I wouldn’t bat an eye if I cut the whole tree down and put the cache in the stump. It's statements and actions like that that are going to be the end of geocaching.
  13. quote:Originally posted by oregone: It looks like Laurencat and I are hitting Klamath Falls for a week or so beginning either May 11th or May 18th, depending on a few variables. Hey oregone, if you make it down on the 10th you can take part in Dash for Cache 2 (GC40F0). The actual dash will be on the 11th, but you'd need to be here on the 10th to plant flags. Unless, of course, the Quad will grant you an exemption to that. Gloom
  14. Was just reading through the latest cache logs page and a cacher named BruceS kept poping up. Did some counting and just from what was listed on the page he hit 53 found and 3 not found on 4/13-4/14 ! I don't know the circumstances but dadgum that's a lot! Oh, I guess I should say that they were all around the Nashville, TN area. Gloom [This message was edited by Gloom on April 17, 2002 at 02:56 PM.]
  15. OK, I went out yesterday and again today and was having the same problem. At one point it was so bad that I had to turn my reciever off/on about every minute or so. It got really frustrating. To illustrate my point, after finding one cache (no thanks to the GPSr) I set it down while I wrote in the log and checked on it occasionally. It was fine for about 2 minutes, then started jumping between 6 miles and 21 miles (and all points inbetween) from the cache. it was a completely cloudless day and checking the reception showed 6 sattellites with full bars and two that were about half. The only way to get it back to the correct place was to turn it off/on. It seems that this seems to happen about every 5 minutes on average. Very frustrating. No one else have this?
  16. It seems the only way to do it is to convert your feet to miles. Since the 315 does projection to one-hundreth of a mile (52.8 feet) you're stuck with 50 foot increments for the projection.
  17. No, I didn't actually clear the memory myself. I was going to but once it rebooted after updating the firmware, everything was already erased. No waypoints, all settings were back to default, etc. I figured that it had done it itself and I didn't need to do it again.
  18. quote:Originally posted by DisQuoi: Any land that you do not own is off limits until you have permission to place something on it. Funny you should mention that. Any land (well almost) that is managed by the government is public land and therefore owned by you and me. Yet I still can't put a cache on NPS, even though I own it. Not that I'm trying to start a fight here and I realize that letting everyone do whatever they want to on public land would be a HUGE problem, it's just that I'm tired of people (not you personally DisQuoi) and the government trying to put restrictions on resonable use of our own lands.

  20. Yeah, she's a crazy cacher.... ...and she didn't even invite me! Almost sorry I introduced her to geocaching.
  21. I upgraded mine from 3.14 to 3.15 this weekend and went out after a cache to test it. I was sorely disappointed. While within 50 ft of the cache (this was after I'd found it) it was jumping between .1 mile and 6+ miles from the cache location. It was very hard to actually find the cache and had to use the 'force' to find it. When the unit started tripping out I'd check it and most times the coords would be way off and the elevation would be more than 2000 ft off. At one point it showed me at 55000 ft, yes that's thousand! I'm actually at about 4200. When it started doing this the only way I could get it back to normal was to turn off the unit, wait a minute and then turn it back on. Some things I noticed: 1) this only seemed to happen at slow speeds, the unit was fine when I was driving in the car, how ever if it started messing up and then got in the car and started driving it wouldn't return to normal without a reboot. 2)My batteries were down to 1/4 indicated (NiMH). Usually my GPSr will start messing up like this when the batteries are low, but usually only when it gets down to almost empty. 3)There were small thunder clouds in the area, with lightening reported to the east. My question, has anyone else experienced this with the new firmware? Was it just the low batteries? Could there have been enough electric disturbance due to the thunderclouds to cause it to mess up that bad? Maybe a combination of low batteries and lightening? Any thoughts? 22. ...so if you guys want to arrange an exchange or drop them in a cache, I'll do my best to pick them up. I don't really have any specific caches in mind to hit while I'm up there, but I know I'll definitely be hitting a few. Caches on the west side are easier for me to get to, since I'll be staying with my Bro in Aloha, but that doesn't mean I can't travel a bit. Let me know what you want to do. Gloom
  23. Download one set from your GPSr to easyGps, and save that file. Then open up another (new) file and download into that from the other GPS. Then just open the first file (so both are open) and select all the way points from one file and copy and paste into the other file. Hope that helps. Gloom
