  1. But here in KFalls (15 minutes from the border) we do have rattlers and they are active. I saw what I thought was one a couple months ago. I'm not entirely certain, 'cause it was more interested in crawling away under a rock than chasing me away screaming like a little girl , but it sure looked like one from the short look I got. We've had several cachers around here mention in there logs that they've stumbled across, or heard them near caches. One cacher was even struck at by one, but luckily it missed. As far as what to do when you find one, try to leave it alone, don't threaten it, and walk slowly away from it if you know where it is. Usually a rattler will only strike if it's cornered or feels threatened (but not always) otherwise it'll just try to get away from you as easily as possible. 2. As Lazyboy pointed out, when found by authorities checking on suspicious container calls, they are more likely to be nervous about an ammo can (or other sealed metal object) than they are a plastic type container, in a garbage bag or not. Cachers here are pretty nervous about using anything that may be construed as a bomb as one of our own was just convicted for placing an ammo can too close to a train tunnel (happened just after 9/11). He had to pay a huge fine and had other sanctions imposed. I for one think ammo cans do not have any place in geocaching. Niether do pvc pipes (yes I've seen a few caches in these). I'd much rather see any type of tupperware/gladware/plasticware, in a garbage bag or not, than either of these. ---- Duct tape is like the Force. 3. Both are behind the counter at local Mom-and-Pop general stores. You have to go in and ask for the 'geocache container'. You're not required to buy anything, so I don't see them as commercial type caches. Especially since they are not advertising the name of the store. It would be different if you had to buy something, or the cache was like 'Mom & Pops store is the best'. -Gloom ---- Duct tape is like the Force. 4. Usually by the time I get them (especially the weekly updates) I've already read what they contain on the website. The only ones that usually contain new information are notices about travel bugs that I either own or are on my watch list. And sometimes caches that are on my watchlist but too far away to be on my 'closest caches' list. In other words what I'm saying is, they're nice but information is usually too late to be important. -Gloom ---- Duct tape is like the Force. 5. It's become like a local joke, when people from northern oregon come down to find caches they're supprised to see that all of our caches are in black garbage bags. For me it's a two-fold reason. The biggest being it is VERY effective camoflauge, I can't tell you the number of times I've stood right over the cache and haven't been able to see it. Only sticking my hand in there reveals it. Second, it helps keep water out of the cache. Even if you use a water tight container there's still a chance that someone won't close it properly. The bag provides extra insurance. Regarding them being ripped, it's true that they snag on just about everything, but after a while you get used to them and can generally move/rehide them without ripping them. And regarding them being seen as trash, true again there is more of a chance of people throwing them away without even looking inside, but if they are hidden well, then no one other than a geocacher should find it. ---- Duct tape is like the Force. 6. Or find a fellow cacher in that area that's willing to go get coords for you. ---- Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

    Cache hype

Other than the half hour it took to download it on my slow @$$ dialup, looks sweet! I can't wait for it to come out. BTW, what do you feed your brain? -Gloom ---- Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

  12. but I will be by the time this happens. Since I only have 4 found caches in the PDX area do I qualify to play? -Gloom ---- Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

  14. Do you mean how long I'll spend looking for a cache before giving up (on average), or more likely you mean how long it takes to locate the cache in general. Usually I can find the cache within ten minutes, but I have been know to spend and hour looking for a couple. Oh, and then there was the time Quad gave us the wrong coords and we spent 3 hours just trying to find a way to the 'cache' without going on private property, but that's a whole other topic -Gloom ---- Duct tape is like the Force. 17. You can't take this one away yet!!!! I figured out the location a couple months ago, but haven't had the chance to get up there and log it yet!. If only you could wait until the end of june.... Oh well.

  19. I say if you like em both, then keep em both. Don't worry about what other people are doing.
  20. You forgot to say what day. I assume you mean tomorrow (monday) since it was past 6 on sunday when you posted it.

  22. Found that by searching for the keywords: book tracking register on Google.com. It was the second site returned.
  23. quote:Originally posted by smoochnme: I agree memorials may have some merit. But lets post coords to an actual memorial you are aware of and get people to go there. But can't you see, that's exactly what's happening. People post coordinates to memorials (for example, or whatever the cache is about). That way other people have a list of memorials that they can go to if they choose to. For example, if someone posts a log about a memorial that I'm not aware of, then I can go find it if I so choose and it's in an area that I can get to. Otherwise I might not ever know that it's there. It gives people a chance to share knowledge that may not otherwise be shared. You can't say that people who post logs for a cache like this are going to make a cache of it themselves if they don't have the opportunity to log this one. If they wanted to do that, then they could still make their own cache of it. Since I've stayed out of this dicussion up until now, and I've been sort of sucked in, here's my take on it. I agree that the locationless caches aren't purely "geocaching" as it was originally defined, but everything grows and changes. For me, my interest in this sport is being able to go to and find interesting locations that I otherwise might not know about. Locationless caches are just another way for me to do that. I do agree that locationless caches should probably be put in another category from geocaching, but for now that's all we have. I have neither the time, resources, or knowledge to make a website dedicated soley to locationless caches, so until someone does or Jeremy splits geocaching.com into seperate activities (locationless, virtual, etc) then we have to deal with what we are given. A lot of people like locationless caches and a lot don't. For those that don't all I can say is, ignore them. For those that do, let's try to find a way keep this from interfering with the traditional style caches.
