  1. You don't get much newer at this than me. This, i believe, is my first post. I would like to start my collection with this set (1 of each). It's also great to see another Red Wing fan in the caching world, there can never be enough of us.

Go Wings! Welcome aboard 67 Nova. Watch this thread for sale dates. GO Wings! (I know I already said it, but can it really be said too much?)

  2. Small update.

The front of the anniversary Original Stash coins (antique copper) will be unpainted to show off that metal!

The back of the coins will be painted (same colors as the standard Original Stash coins).

Still working on the icon, but we've got our best Icon Yime, uh I mean guy working on it.

  3. Actually 500 ft rule.

    <picky>

    528 ft rule. = 0.1 mile

Admins are pretty strict about that one around here, too, because, I believe, it's one of the least ambiguous rules in the entire "sport"! ;)

    Thanks for the clarification.

  4. What are all of the different versions that have been made of the U.S.A. coins? We think they are:

    -U.S.A. 2003

    -U.S.A. 2004

    -U.S.A. 2004 (.999 Silver)

    -U.S.A. 2005

    -U.S.A. 2005 (Antique Bronze)

    -U.S.A. 2005 (.999 Silver)

    -U.S.A. 2006 ver 1a

    -U.S.A. 2006 ver 1b

    -U.S.A. 2006 ver 2

Is this correct? Any rumors of a 2007?

    Thanks,

    ^V^

What about 2006 ver 2 with a permanent black blotch on the coin face? Sorry I had to pipe in, that's the one I have sitting on my desk in front of me, that I keep debating whether it's worth the postage and envelope to send back to them to get it replaced.

  5. ...someone placed a physical cache about 250 feet from the starting point of the puzzle. This may seem like no big deal, but the starting coordinates were essential to every facet of the puzzle...

Did you ever contact the cache owner and ask if they would move the cache or something so you could create yours? 300 ft rule right. They could move theirs without approval as long as it's not more then 100ft and then you could place your puzzle cache.

    Just a thought...

Actually 500 ft rule. Cache owner wouldn't budge, and neither would the Admin. Oh well. I probably couldn't even find my notes now anyway. My energy will be nicely used in creating this coin set.

  6. Great news!

After some correspondence with CinemaBoxers I'm confident that this set of coins will go forward as planned, with a couple new twists that will actually make the project better overall. Stay tuned for dates and additional "sneak peaks. Still hoping to have these ready for a mid-april sale. Thanks CinemaBoxers.

  7. As an example specifically using DaVinci - if you view the Illustrated Version of The DaVinci Code - it has photos of many of the famous works in it. Including Vitruvian Man.

In the back - permission to publish the work, and photo credit was given.

Just be careful - it would be really easy to modify the work and make it inspired - but your own - so you would have no risks at all. :)

PM sent. Hopeful to engage in a discussion.

  8. Just for something to think about...

I would be a little cautious - that art has some SERIOUS copyright 'watchers' right now due to the DaVinci Code. Maybe something inspired would be better, but Id be very careful using the actual art to produce the coins.

I'd be interested in knowing what kind of copyright might be on something like this. After all, even if daVinci could have put a copyright on any of his works, they'd have expired hundreds of years ago. As far as I know, you can't re-copyright something, only extend a copyright.

Heck, the rights to Peter Pan have finally expired (has anyone noticed the glut of PeterPan sequels suddenly?).

I'm not saying that there aren't people out there keeping a careful eye on copyrights associated to daVinci, but his actual works just couldn't be owned by anyone else right now. ...could they?

This captures the essence of my question. I know that people, organizations, or museums physically own or claim the rights to the hard copy of the original Da Vinci notebooks, but I could not find any evidence of a copyright to the images contained in those notebooks.

  9. Just for something to think about...

I would be a little cautious - that art has some SERIOUS copyright 'watchers' right now due to the DaVinci Code. Maybe something inspired would be better, but Id be very careful using the actual art to produce the coins.

The sneak peak was an image used for drafting the coin only. The actual image will not be used. I would be interested to know who holds that copyright now. All the searching I did lead to the conclusion that the image is public domain. Da Vinci certainly didn't copyright it, and as far as I know, Dan Brown holds no legal power over the image. If you have more info I'd be very interested.

  10. I've been fascinated with the life, works, sketches and inventions of Leonardo da Vinci for virtually my entire existence. Naturally, when a popular historical fiction novel hit the shelves, I gobbled it up like most of the rest of the world. Several "Me Too" novels, nonfiction books, theories, and religious commentaries followed closely on the heals of the book I'm referring to (I don't think I need to name the book here, I'm pretty sure you all know what I'm talking about). I think the thing that fascinates people most about Leonardo, is that his life was truly a mystery. We know a lot about him from his letters, sketches, etc. We are surrounded by the inventions of his infinite mind, but often don't even realize how important they are to us, because most of his inventions never made it farther than a sketch and written theory (usually using mirror writing) during his own lifetime. Despite all that we know, there is far more that we don't know.

A few years back, I planned an intricate multi-stage Puzzle Cache based on the life and works of Leonardo Da Vinci. It was planned to be a difficulty "5" with some super-swag at the end for anyone that could actually figure out the puzzles. I spent nearly a month planning out every detail (I know, I'm a bit insane :) ). Then, a couple days before I submitted the cache for approval, someone placed a physical cache about 250 feet from the starting point of the puzzle. This may seem like no big deal, but the starting coordinates were essential to every facet of the puzzle. To make a long story just a bit shorter, I ended up scrapping the whole cache and all my work. Until now it has been burning in the back of my mind like a red-hot x-acto knife. In attempt to relieve some of this burning pain (it really does hurt :P ), I allowed the idea to mutate into something that could be depicted on a set of encrypted geocoins and solved anywhere in the world, regardless of location. Meanwhile I await the demise of the nameless cacher who stole my coordinates (okay, he didn't really steal them, but what can I say, I'm insane remember?). Your chance to TRY to solve the puzzle is very near. (dramatic pause, and then on to the details I know you all wish I would have put in the first two paragraphs instead of bending your cyber-ear for the last 5 minutes  )

Coming Soon!!! How was that for a dramatic entry?

The da Vinci Coins - 3 Geocoin set:

    Details:

    • 3 geocoins, sold as a set
    • Trackable on geocaching.com
    • 335 of each coin
    • Some Limited Editions - accessible by solving all or part of the puzzle
    • 1.5" or 1.75" - waiting to see proof details vs. affordability
    • Unique prefix
    • At least 1 unique icon (possibly one for each coin). Waiting for pricing...I want to try to keep this affordable to the buyers

I think that's all I want to say right now. I don't want to take all the mystery out of it!

Okay one more tidbit - I'm aiming to have these ready by mid-April, so I can sell them at the same time as the Original Stash Anniversary Geocoins mentioned HERE, so that you can combine shipping if you so wish.

And here's the sneak peak I promised:

    vitruvianpeak.jpg

Stay tuned to this thread for additional details and possibly some more "Sneak Peaks"

  11. Right now, we're looking at a mid april sale/shipping date on these. Based on the responses we've had, there will be 750 Anniversary copper coins (as promised; this number will not vary), and right now we're planning to do 300 standard editions for those that haven't had a chance to buy one yet. Both coins will go on sale at the same time, for those that want to combine shipping. Stay posted for additional details. Final sale date and details will be announced here and also linked to a new "On Sale Now" thread at the appropriate times.

  12. Thanks for all your great responses so far. You're giving us a great idea of what to expect number-wise. Just a reminder that a post in this forum is not a reservation or preorder, it just helps us plan ahead. Purchasing info will be made available at a later date in the geocoin forums.

    Thanks,

    Dave

  13. I was hoping to see a new coin here, not a remake of the orignal coin in a different metal. I have one of the V1's so I'll pass on the V3's.

(S)he's got a point--maybe a new original stach coin would be good.

Team 360 posted last July that there would not be a version 3. I wasn't fond of the original design and don't see why there can't be a completely different coin. Apparently, there will be a coin every year of the same design according to the original post.

Sorry to hear that you're not fond of the design. :P I am glad to hear from the forum replies that you're in the minority. :o I wasn't aware of the post by Team360 in July or any decision to limit the number of coin versions released. Trusting that he did say that, it was without my knowledge, and upon further discussion with Team360 we decided that we wanted to go forward with this project. So far the forum responses seem to echo support for the idea. Sorry if you personally feel that we misrepresented ourselves by having another version of the coin, that was not our intention. Since you didn't like the coin in the first place, quite frankly I'm not sure why you care whether we issue another edition or not, but thanks for your opinion anyway. By all means if you don't like the design, feel free to not purchase any.

I don't recall ever saying that another coin of the same design would be minted each year in my original post. For more info on different designs and plans for future editions, check out my previous post in this thread.

    Thanks for your input,

    Dave

  14. I was hoping to see a new coin here, not a remake of the orignal coin in a different metal. I have one of the V1's so I'll pass on the V3's.

(S)he's got a point--maybe a new original stach coin would be good.

Great points. I knew this would get some mixed reviews. Upon initiating this 7th anniversary project, we looked at the details of the coin, and discussed ways to change it, but there really wasn't anything about it that we wanted to change. I mean, really, how do you make something more fitting for the anniversary, than the Original Stash Plaque. I'm afraid anything different would be a let down. So, instead we opted for a special anniversary Icon and metal instead. We do have other "Top Secret" Original Stash projects in the works right now that will involve different coins, but my lips are sealed until we're ready to announce those projects.

Also, someone asked if we planned to issue one of these each year. In answer to that question, regarding the Anniversary Editions, I have not discussed that with the others involved with this project, so I don't have a firm answer, but right now, my gut says it won't be a yearly thing. Only time will tell. Our intentions currently are to make the Standard edition OS coin available to new comers, so that just because someone discovers Geocaching/Geocoins in 2008 doesn't mean they can only get an OS coin, commemorating the humble beginnings of our sport, by selling their first born. Once again, we have not made a firm decision on if/when we will permanently discontinue minting of Standard Edition OS coins.

    Thanks for your comments.

  15. WHOOOO HOOOOO! Now we're talkin'! Holding that cool copper coin in my hand is gonna be magic...like holding a handful of dripping beans from the OCB. The stuff of legends!

And how about the amazing significance of seven? Holy cow, the coincidences! I just received seven geocoins in the mail today, had seven calls from telemarketers, and I have only seven sessions remaining with my psychologist!

Thank you Redwing_dave and Team 360 for this Magnificent (Seven) opportunity!

Edited to add: And the coincidences keep on happening! I just counted seven cases in which RWD used bad grammar or poor punctuation in his original post...AND, if you add the numbers together in Team "360", (you get 9) then subtract how many caching teams are involved in the project (minus 2), you get...SEVEN!!! Dude, it's frickin' magic.

R U gust goyn 2 mayk phun uv my gramar and punktuushun, or dew u want two mayk phun uv my spelyng two???

  16. We're interested! Plan on visiting the original stash tribute plaque next month!

    Thanks BRoKeN W!

Please state whether you're interested in the Anniversary edition or the Standard edition or Both, so that we have an idea of totals. This applies to everyone, not just BRoKeN W.

Thanks, and keep smilin' and cachin'

    (edited for spelling and bolding)

  17. On May 3rd, 2007 we celebrate 7 years of Geocaching!

To help commemorate this event, Team360 and myself are releasing a Special Edition 7th Anniversary Original Stash Geocoin. Why a 7th anniversary question, you ask? Because 7 is a very special number: the 4th prime number, 7 days in a week (which gives us 7 days to cache  ), 7-year itch, 7 years of bad luck, 7 dwarves, 7 wonders of the world, 7 deadly sins, 7 habits of highly effective cachers, etc. Also, I've heard that if you ask a person what number comes to mind immediately when they hear the word carrot, the majority of people will respond "seven" (I've never been able to verify this one, so maybe you all can help me out by testing it on your loved ones). To find out more cool facts about the number 7, click here. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THIS GREAT SPORT HAS NOT ONLY LASTED 7 YEARS, BUT IT CONTINUES TO GROW AND SPREAD AROUND THE GLOBE. THIS IS A PERFECT CHANCE TO LOOK BACK AT THE ROOTS OF GEOCACHING!

If you are familiar with anniversary gift giving guidelines you know that we had two options for this coin, WOOL or COPPER. Although a wool coin would definitely be interesting, we decided to go with Copper. The coin will be the same as the regular version 2 (with the registered trademark symbol) Original Stash Geocoins, except they will be Antique Copper, rather than Antique Bronze. They will be trackable with the OS prefix, but will have a special 7th anniversary icon (Icon yet to be unveiled). Only 750 of these coins will ever be made. Regardless of how much you beg or plead, once the 750 are gone, they're gone for good, and no other copper Original Stash coins will ever be released again. The only exception is that Team360 and myself may make a limited run (i.e. 50 coins) of POLISHED COPPER Designer's edition coins for the 7th anniversary run. Designer's edition coins will not be available for sale with the standard anniversary coins, they'll only be available from Team360 or myself (please no trade requests yet, we haven't even verified that we'll be making the polished copper coins yet). All coins will come with a commemorative Copper Original Stash Pin. We are planning to sell the coins/pins in time to allow delivery before May 03, 2007. We do not yet have a "for sale date." Although we'd love for you to express your interest in this forum thread, this is not a presale or reserve thread. Please watch the geocoin forums for the SALE DATE announcement.

Team360 and myself have also had several requests to mint additional REGULAR EDITION ORIGINAL STASH geocoins. When we first announced the Original Stash Geocoins, we specified that additional coins may be minted according to demand. Our thought at the time was that with the timeless nature of this coin, and the significance of the Original Stash, we would like anyone who wants an Original Stash coin to have a reasonable shot at getting one (not unlike Crake's policy). You can view the original thread HERE if you have any questions about the original minting. That being said, we would like to hear from YOU, regarding whether you're ready for another run of Original Stash coins, and if so, how many you'd be interested in (once again, not a reservation list, just helps us have an idea of whether to proceed). These coins would also be the regular edition version 2 coins (the ones with the registered trademark symbol which was accidentally left off of version 1) with the standard icon. For your reference there were 1000 version 1 coins made (never to be made again, since we accidentally left off the registered trademark symbol), 250 version 2 coins (same as v.1 but had the trademark symbol), and 20 Designer's edition version 2 coins (unpainted antique bronze, otherwise identical to version 2).

If you have no idea what an original stash coin looks like, here's a graphic. Remember, the anniversary coins will be COPPER, instead of bronze, and will have a different Icon:

When posting wants, please let us know whether you are interested in the Standard Edition, Anniversary Edition, or Both. Thanks.

Thanks for looking. We hope you enjoy the Anniversary Edition Coins.

    Best Regards,

    Redwing_Dave & Team360

  18. I've got a FEW STANDARD edition Extravaganza of the Totally Insane Geocoins to trade. Here's the Story:

In June of 2006, six crazy UTAH cachers embarked on a 2500+ mile roadtrip to find caches in 7 states plus Canada during a 104 hour period. To commemorate the feat 100 of these coins were minted (total - standard+limited edition). Since a lot of our driving and caching took place at night, with only the glow of the dashboard and multiple GPSrs, the back glows in the dark. The Back shows some of the important stats of the trip including the states visited, cacher's names, etc. The front is a tire, the back a steering wheel, in rememberance of those long hours in the minivan. What a great adventure it was. Recovery took me so long, that I didn't get around to minting these coins until last month. All coins are black nickel. The coins are numbered 1-100, but not trackable.

Here's the picture (this pic is of an LE coin; the standard coins have a Yellow Glow back...sorry, don't have a great picture of those):

    Extravaganzafront-1.jpgExtravaganzaBack.jpg

Anyway, if you're interested in a trade, please drop me an email. With all the geocoins out there these days, my trading list is quite antequated, but I did some updating in my seeking list, so hopefully it reflects what I'm actually looking for (mostly geographical, geocaching topic, or event coins).

    Thanks for looking

Thanks to everyone that has emailed me. I've been swamped with emails, so if I haven't gotten back to you yet, I will as soon as I get a chance. I've traded a couple that were "shoe-ins" for me, but was waiting to assess all offers before finishing up with my last couple trades.

Also, if anyone is interested, I'll have a few of my Top40 coins available for trade when they become available. Let me know if your interested:

    Thanks everyone,

  20. thanks for your input.

It seems that you think it is better to have no geocoin for Sweden than a coin made by me.

But it seems that the we will have no Sweden-Coin the next years, because the discussion on geocaching.se is going on for more than a year without a result.

    cheers,

    SwedenHawk

This is too bad, isn't it SwedenHawk. I am a big fan of Sweden too (I'm still gloating over the Olympic Gold Medal for Mens Hockey last year :D ). I stuck my nose in geocaching.se to try and help them along, or at least let them know that there is some interest from the outside world. Their progress was slower than a snot stream trying to climb up the North Pole during the Winter Solstice. I offered to help them in whatever way possible to turn the project into reality (i.e. help with U.S. distribution, front some cache for the project, etc.), but I ended up with a Swedish Boot in my rump for even voicing my interest (note: it was a single swedish boot, about size 13...not sure what that is in mm; please don't take this to mean that the Swedes in general are a mean people...generally they were quite friendly, but there was one large-footed fellow I'd recommend avoiding unless you've got padded trowsers). It was very clear that they wanted to do it themselves with no contact from the outside world, even if it took them till the end of time. Hopefully we'll see an official Swedish Geocoin at some point in the future, but I have a feeling we'll just have to wait until the Swedes are ready.

As for the Swiss, I don't know much about them, except I'm not a big fan of their cheese. I prefer a nice mild provolone, or some strong greek feta (I couldn't resist).
