  1. Update on pricing: Worked through the minting details, and all artwork is approved by Groundspeak. Hope to have an icon to show off soon. Good news! I was able to pull this off for less than I thought I'd be able to. Each 3-coin set will cost $23 ($7.66 per coin) + S/H. Stay tuned - the quiz (i.e. Mini-contest) is coming up soon.
  2. Nice looking coin. I'm hoping to be able to arrange a trade for one of these.
  3. Right now it looks like these will go on sale approximately April 12th or 13th, assuming no problems in the minting process. I'm trying to get the sale date to coincide with the Original Stash Coins I'm producing, so that those who want da Vinci and Stash coins can benefit from combined S/H costs. Sometime this week I will likely post the "da Vinci Quiz." Correctly answering the Quiz will allow you to reserve a Limited Edition (antique silver) version of the coin. More details to follow, but keep watching if you're looking to get your hands on an LE coin set. Currently the number of coins will be: Antique Bronze (standard edition) = 299 sets Antique Silver (limited edition) = 25 sets Antique Copper (XLE) = 11 sets Stay tuned. (updated on 3/20 because I incorrectly posted the number of coins in each edition. Now it's correct)
  4. Just a little update on the Original Stash coins. As of right now, it looks like the price of each coin/pin combo (regular version or anniversary version) will be $10 U.S. Right now we're planning on a sale date during the later part of the week of April 9th (eg 12th or 13th). This is subject to change, as we want to have the coins in hand before selling them, and we are trying to make this sale coincide with the sale of the "da Vinci Coins" so that you all can benefit from combined S/H charges. For more info on the da Vinci Coin Set, visit THIS THREAD). Stay tuned for more info.
  5. Just FYI, this is not a preorder list, but if you follow this thread you should be the first to know when these go on sale. -RD
  6. Time for a sneak peak into Coin #3 in the set, the "Knights Templar Geocoin." The seal of the Knights Templar was used to press a molten wax image onto a letter or other document. The seal was equivalent to a signature or notary seal, demonstrating the veracity of the document carrying the seal. Although each Grandmaster's seal was slightly different, a common thread of all the seals was a picture of two knights riding on one horse. The full meaning of this image is subject to much interpretation and scrutiny, however most agree that at the very least, this was a symbol of the humble beginnings of the Templar Knights...they were too poor to own a horse for each knight, so they shared a mount. This certainly wasn't the case later in the history of the Knights Templar, as they were showered with valuable gifts by those who they protected. It is well established that the Knights became very wealthy indeed, and were probably great contributors to modern banking practices. Here is a sample of a well aged Templar seal: The front of coin 3 will bear a similar image, although to match with the rest of the set, and because making a coin look well aged, without making it look horrible is very difficult , coin #3 will be a little more refined than the one pictured above. Stay tuned for more details. -RD
  7. Okay, not much traffic lately. Apparently everyone is busy in the more "Heated" forum threads. Just wanted to announce that based on the limited response I got here, I've decided to move ahead with a single icon for the set of coins, but each coin in the set will be trackable. Pending approval, the set will have a custom prefix of "dV" for "da Vinci" or "de Vinci" (both correct; you can choose what you want YOUR prefix to stand for). I've got one of my best artists working on the icon as we speak. I'll post a pic of the icon as soon as I've got one. Keep watching for the "da Vinci quiz" which will determine eligibility for the Limited edition coins. You'll hear about it here first.
  8. Hey Dave, Not to be picky, but additional icons are $150 each or $300. Spread that over the 1000 or so coins you indicated you were going to make is $.30 more per coin. In any case I think one icon for the set is good. That is the way you are selling them so why not one icon show you have the set. Thanks for your input on the number of icons Atwell group! You're right, it is only 30 cents per coin, but I was giving the cost per set. 3 coins x 30 cents = 90 cents. I rounded up a few cents since the pricing wasn't set in stone yet anyway. Thanks again for your input. -RD
  9. This too is not entirely correct - remember, different copyright laws apply to different works, and different timelines. As an artist, Im all too familiar with copyrights - and how they protect me. But, from the standpoint of someone who may be risking a copyright infringement suit - its not worth trusting ANY snippet. As I said, play it safe and make the work your own. There is not ONE single copyright paragraph that is correct in its entirety and applies to all artists or works. While the one above is correct, the one I posted is as well. And honestly - there aren't too many lawyers out there who are familiar with ALL facets of copyright law - so the sources for correct information are pretty much "Check the libraries yourself, and be sure you understand them!" I appreciate all the concern over copyright here. I have discussed the issue with CinemaBoxers (thank you again) and a few others, and have decided I'd rather be safe than even risk a lawsuit that could cost me thousands of dollars, over a geocoin that I'm doing mostly out of desire to see my ideas engraved in metal, and to try to provide a quality geocoin for the coin collectors, puzzle lovers, and da Vinci fans out there (in other words, I won't be grossing enough on this project to even pick up the phone and talk to a defense lawyer ). I'll be the first to admit that a lawsuit would be quite unlikely given the scope of this project and other details, but I've made my decision already. Having said that, could I respectfully ask that we refrain from any further discussion of copyright law in this forum. I've made my decision on how to handle the image(s) to make them 'my own', and if anything, I think it improves the quality of the coin overall (not that I'm comparing myself to da Vinci by any means, but he wasn't designing a geocoin now was he?). If you have a burning desire to share copyright law with me, please feel free to PM me, email me, or contact the individual you would like to speak to outside of this thread. I'm just having a hard time getting my da Vinci Mojo (not that kind of mojo ) working with all this legal stuff flying around. Thanks in advance. Now onto the question at hand: Anyone else that is interested in this set of coins have an opinion on whether to have a seperate icon for each coin, or one icon for the set? (see my previous posts for more info) Thanks everybody. Hope to hear from lots of you soon!
  10. Still trying to make up my mind whether to do 1 icon for each coin (3 total), or 1 icon for the whole set (but all 3 coins would be trackable. As of right now, the estimated price on these coins would be just under $25 per set of 3. This is based on each coin being 1.75" wide. A separate icon for each would add about $1 per set. Anyone else have an opinion on 1 vs. 3 icons? Another sneak peak is on its way soon. (note prices subject to change. as soon as I get things finalized with the icon, I'll post more details on the price.)
  11. Hey, that sounds familiar, although mine would have been an accidental geocide, so I don't know how that rates. So far I like Rasj's suggestion #3 "I love the smell of a Geocide in the morning." It has a good ring to it. I also like "Cache, Blab, and Burn."
  12. Wow, never seen that happen before . Does anybody happen to know if Renegade Knight is interested in this coin? Thanks for stopping those Brokeback jokes PGH, they were getting inside my head. I almost had to stomp off, which would have been okay, cause I'd get a LE coin, but then I got peaved cause I realized that the people who made me leave would get an XLE coin. Now I don't know what to do, so I guess I'll stick around. Has anyone actually tried calling 1-800-GEOCIDE yet? Just wondering. It'd be pretty funny to put on the coin, but that would suck if you got some school for the performing arts or Garmin's helpline. That might be just a little too much for the delicate mental state of someone on the brink of a dramatic exit.
  13. Now that brings up an interesting concept. how about this. If you can prove you were indeed the one behind the person commiting GeoCide, and did nothing that either did or would have, gotten you banned or punished in any other way, then yes you would be eligible for a LE coin. I'm sorry, I know this is supposed to be fun and all, but I really don't get this. Why would you want to make fun of/point fun at anyone who quits geocaching? I mean, it's such a great sport/hobby/past time, why would you want to mar it negatively in any way. Could you explain how this is so great? If someone leaves geocaching, even in a dramatic way, I'd be more apt to feel sorry about it, not make fun of them. Yeah I just don't get it sorry. I don't have any intention or desire to make fun of any one person in particular. I just think the long, dramatic history of geocide is as deserving of some recognition as anything. And I think we all know if we look back through all the geocoins that have come out in the past several months, coins don't have to be GREAT to be minted and sold.
  14. Now that brings up an interesting concept. how about this. If you can prove you were indeed the one behind the person commiting GeoCide, and did nothing that either did or would have, gotten you banned or punished in any other way, then yes you would be eligible for a LE coin. Sweet! Time to pull out the lipstick, and start going through my hit-list (reference to Billy Madison, actually I think wearing lipstick as a grown man is punishable as a felony in Sandy, Utah).
  15. Only if the actual account owner admits that it was their account and then commits geoCide themself. In that case they would receive the XLE that I wasn't even going to mention. Dang, that was going to be my question! And I had the perfect sockpuppets to OFF too! I'm so upset that MustangJoni stole my idea, that I might just do it. Don't try and stop me!! It won't help. I'm going to chuck my Magellan from the tallest building in town, plumetting to the earth below (okay, not much of a threat since the tallest building in town is like 3 stories high, and I hate my Magellan ever since I bought the Garmin 60CSx, but I'll do it all the same). Oh, hang on, I gotta go take my medications.... ....(10 minutes later) wheh, that feels better. Nothing like a prozac, xanax, and Whiskey cocktail. I don't see the term "Geocide" as being family offensive myself (at least now that my medicine has kicked in). I mean, even here in Sandy, UT (where as YemonYime so kindly pointed out, BrokeBack Mountain was indeed banned from the theater...well one theater anyway), I don't have to shield the neighbor kids eyes before I whip out the herbiCIDE to spray down the walks, or cover the kids ears when I'm having a sordid conversation about what insectiCIDE to use to kick the crap out of the hornets that made a nest in my sprinkler box. Killing off your geocaching identity is a pretty far cry from suicide in my personal paradigm, although I must admit sometimes it seems more dramatic. I think my skin is thick enough. I'm in for a regular edition. I'm afraid I don't have the guts to pull off what it takes to get an LE coin. What if you can provide positive evidence that you drove someone else to geocide, is there like an Ultra-XLE for that?
  16. Time for the Icon unveiling! A huge Thank You to YemonYime for weaving the essence of the Original Stash with the flare of the copper anniversary in this icon. And here's the smaller version: I hope you all like it as much as Team360 and I do. We can't thank our citrusy fresh friend enough.
  17. Hopefully you meant that you "CAN'T" wait. Otherwise I feel deflated. Don't feel deflated Dave. These will be awesome and will have many fans, such as us. Love Leonardo and love learning new things about him. The man was a genius in every sense of the word! One icon - and are you looking for them to be puzzle related? That would be . Thanks! Just as Leonardo's life remains largely a mystery, these coins will definitely be puzzling. There is one big puzzle that can only be solved by combining information from all 3 coins (that's why the coins haven't been completely unveiled yet...don't want anyone getting a headstart). The first person to solve the puzzle (if it in fact can be done ), within a predesignated time period will get a free set of Ultra-Limited Edition coins (assuming things go as planned in the minting process). The "Big" puzzle is intended to be difficult, and mysterious. Not straightforward at all...if da Vinci's life and genius were easy to figure out, it wouldn't be so intriguing, right? The intention of these coins is to be intriguing and mysterious in that same difficult way. For those vigilantly watching this forum, there will also be an easier "quiz" that I will post sometime closer to when the coins go on sale. The first X-amount of people that come up with the correct answer for the quiz will be eligible to purchase a Limited Edition version of the coin. That's all I can say about the puzzle and the quiz for now, but stay tuned for more in the future. -RD
  18. Hopefully you meant that you "CAN'T" wait. Otherwise I feel deflated.
  19. Time for a little more information, and another sneak peak. As mentioned above, this will be a 3 coin set. The coins will be as follows: 1-Virtuvian Man Geocoin 2-Paris Meridian Geocoin 3-Knights Templar Geocoin Above, I shared a partial peak at Coin #1. The front of Coin #2 will be based on the Arago Medallions that mark the Paris Meridian, one of the meridians used prior to World standardization to the Prime Meridian. The Paris Meridian is also referred to as the Rose Line (although this is likely an incorrect reference). You're likely familiar with theories about the Rose Line, and what da Vinci's possible associations were with this geographical marker. If not, its time to start looking into it. Here is a picture of an actual Arago Medallion outside of the Louvre (and a sneak peak of what to expect from coin #2): One question for those of you still interested in this coin set. Would you prefer a separate icon for each of the 3 coins (3 coins = 3 coins) at an added cost of approximately $1 per set, or would you prefer to save the buck and just have one icon for all 3 coins? Thanks for your input. Watch for another sneak peak in the next few days. -RD
  20. P.S. Your title bar would look swell if you changed your "From" field to "Anchorage" instead of "Anchoarge" Oh and Damenace, sure you can stow away, but I have to pay a fee for bags over 50#, so you'd have to cover the difference. We'll be going after Kings, Silvers, and Halibut this time (of course its hard to avoid a few sea bass and lingcod when fishing for Silvers, so you'd have to be willing to put up with those too).
  21. Great, I'll be spending significant time in both Anchorage and FairbankS, as well as everywhere inbetween. Show me that you want to cache, and I'll show you the coins. Balls in your court Deafhunt; call the ball.
  22. Who could forget the infamous 2005 Pork Rind version? Brittle and rare, but oh so gooood. And great for road trips! Wait, are you talking about the Hot & Spicy Pork Rind version or the Standard Pork Rind version. Please clarify.
  23. See my response in your other thread: HERE.
  24. What's your location in Alaska? I get up there whenever I can. If my wife were game, I'd live up there, but you know what they say about keeping the wife happy. I can't in good conscience give away a geocoin to a geocacher that hasn't ever found or placed a geocache, or really done anything geocaching related except for asking for geocoins (as far as I can tell from your profile). Here's my offer. I'm coming to Alaska for about 3 weeks in June/July. If you want to go find a geocache, I'll take you and help you find it. After you've successfully found a geocache, and I've verified that you really do want to be a geocacher, and are the person you say you are, I'll give you one of my personal coins as well as an Original Stash coin. Alaska is a big state. I won't be traveling through all of it, but I will be moving around a lot while I'm up there, so state your location and I'll see if I can make a pass. If you happen to be in a location that I'm not visiting, I'd bet I can hook you up with a local cacher to take you out caching, or find an event for you in your area. If I can verify through an established cacher that you've engaged in geocaching activities, then I'll find a coin to send you (the personal and Stash coins are only if you find a cache with me). The coins are on the table; your call. Best wishes. -RD (go Wings!)
