  2. As Red90 stated, sounds like you don't have any maps installed besides the base-map (all that the 650 comes with, the 650T comes with TOPO maps which may not be exactly what you want) it come with which only shows major highways. You can purchase and install Garmin maps like the city navigator stuff (which are much cheaper if purchased from Amazon dot com or get free OSM maps from their site (http://www.openstreetmap.org/) and give them a try.

    Hope this helps

  3. Never would have thought of the sharpener- great idea! we started with a small fanny pack, moved to a shoulder bag, and now I want a back pack or sling with lots of pockets. Any suggestions on bags? :D

I use a Camelbak Transformer ( http://www.amazon.com/CamelBak-Transformer-TransFormer-Black/dp/B00147NRYE ). It is a hydration pack with tons of pockets to carry most anything you could need for a day of caching plus H2O!!!

I also carry a mini snake stick approx 18-24" long to fish caches out of stumps, poke around in debris, etc

  4. True, but make sure you initially buy the DVD version of City Navigator if you want to apply a lifetime map update subscription. The lifetime subscription can't be applied to the download version of City Navigator. See the Garmin FAQ here: https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={16315fb0-39b2-11de-5dd5-000000000000}

The exact issue I ran into. Bought the download version of the maps for my Montana and also a lifetime map card from Best Buy and the two wouldnt work together. Called Garmin and told them what I had done and they sent me a DVD version and assigned my LMU card to it and I now have lifetime maps on my Montana. Best part, they charged me nothing!!!

I use my Montana mostly for Geocaching as I have a nuvi for automotive use but have used the Montana in nuvi mode and was well pleased with it in automotive use (I do have the cradle when I use it in my truck).

Yeah the screen isn't as large as my nuvi but was completely useful none the less.

Did they charge you for the DVD or send it to you for free? I ask as I've just ordered the Montana 600 and am looking around for mapping options.

How good are the Topo maps as far as locating roads?

No charge for the DVD (no shipping either)

  5. I use a Maxpedition versipack Jumbo - easy access without removing it from myself.

There are similar generics out there

I use the same bag in Digital Foliage most of the time or a CamelBak hydration backpack (The Transformer version, lots of pockets) on all day caching trips as I can carry more water that way. You cannot go wrong with Maxpedition gear. You get what you pay for with their stuff.

I have used thigh rigs before and not a big fan of them as I tend to carry a lot of goodies and it feels like a weight swinging around on my leg, works just wasn't as comfy feeling.

  7. Because of a fix I am having to do on my CO 400t, I am looking to possibly get another addition to the GPS stable. Since touchscreens are undesirable, the 62s seems to stand out. $399 seems to be the going price, anyone seen any deals better, or even someone with a used model?

Unless paperless caching is desired or wireless sharing, I would suggest a GPSMAP60csx (Amazon.com $199). The older and IMO a better GPS than the 62s. The bugs have all been worked out and no squeaky case :)

Supports SD cards, same screen size, etc.

As much as I love my 60csx (and always have it with me) I mostly use my Oregon 550 as I geocache more than anything else and paperless is the holy grail.

    My .02 worth

  8. Was caching with the wife one afternoon and she saw a better way into the woods for a cache so she took the lead, got about 100' into the wood and she stopped to let her GPS'r settle a bit. I was about 3 steps behind her when I felt a sting on my leg, looked down and found myself standing in a giant wasp nest that had been knocked down (I think the wife set me up ). I got hit 12 times before I got her and myself into high gear.

I am not allergic to wasp stings so other than a nice batch of whelps all was good. Wife got a good laugh at me flailing around like a wild man.

But something to keep in mind if you are allergic to wasp / hornet stings

  9. Thanks for the input. I added databases for other states and also one to move "finds" into. I then created different filters for my respective GPSr to create specific GPX files for each and also split the GPX files into location specific files ( i.e San Antonio, Houston, etc and some for the State / National parks).

Will try this setup for awhile and see how it shakes out. Again thanks

  10. For those of you using GSAK how do you setup your databases to manage the different areas you cache in. Do you setup a DB for each general area?. I cache in several cities (San Antonio, Houston, Humble, Pasadena and several parks) and was wondering what the more seasoned users are doing with this.

I have 3 different GPSr and each requires a different upload setup due to memory, etc (60CSX, Oregon 550, and Nuvi 765t).

    All input appreciated.
