  1. I've got an idea for a cache placement in my area and had a couple questions about placement and classification. I have a certain locking mechanism that requires moving a dial a certain way (not a numeric combination) and want to send folks to a certain place to gather clues to open this device, which will be located elsewhere. 1 - Is it a bad idea or inadvisable to locate the physical cache several miles away in an unrelated location? I'll be sending people to a place that charges admission to look for these clues and the vicinity itself already has a few caches nearby (and adjacent public park) and any place I put it would probably be too close to another cache. The cache itself will be medium- to large-sized, so that will limit where I'll be able to hide it. 2 - I always read the description before going after a cache...but the fact that I am requiring folks to go elsewhere BEFORE attempting to find the cache itself may confuse folks. Or will it? By labeling it as a 'mystery' or 'multicache', is that enough? 3 - When classifying this cache, would this sort of thing be considered a multicache or a mystery cache? My coordinates will probably be for the physical cache itself, but the description will send people to this other location to gather the clues before they can open it. They will have to go to several different places at this location to gather the clues and I'll give coordinates for each location (though by what means I have not decided - via additional clues or just giving them outright).
  2. Yeah...been there and I agree it's a cool place. I actually had the c:geo app on my old phone at the time because someone recommended it to me, but that phone had all sorts of connectivity issues, so I could never get it to locate me for longer than a few minutes, so I gave up. Next time I go back there I plan to hit those caches. Personally, I think it's a shame that NPS doesn't allow geocaching. I haven't seen any caches yet that do damage or harm to the surroundings and they actually could be a draw for the geocachers out there on the hunt. I'm sure there have been all sorts of discussions about this, but having done a bunch of work for the park service over the last few years, I can think of dozens of great spots for caches. I suppose there's always Waymarking, but it just isn't the same...
  3. I'm fairly new to geocaching, but I've already started forming opinions on location, cache style and type of hide. Just wondering what some folks thought about these things. I suppose without going into too much spoiler-ific detail, I'd like to get some suggestions for good caches to go for in the Atlanta area. What are your favorite: 1. Location - meaning geographic spot, be it of historic or scenic value...or just a cool corner of the ATL) 2. Cache style (size, container, contents) - While a micro container is easier to hide and makes for a good quick park 'n' grab, I'm always psyched to find the ammo box or tupperware-style container...they usually mean cooler stuff inside. 3. Type of hide - Okay...I admit, the first time I found a cache under a light pole 'skirt', I hadn't seen it before so I thought it was a cool way to hide something out in the open. But after the second or third one I sort of starting feeling like it was kind of a cop-out. Not only that, it usually means the cache is somewhere in or near a big parking lot, which in turn means a big shopping center or something that isn't all that interesting to visit. I don't mind a parking lot cache if the cache is disguised or camouflaged in some way and therefore more of a challenge - not only for the person searching for it, but also for the person hiding it because they have to be pretty creative about it. Anyone got any particular caches you'd recommend going after? Something you had a tough time with but you felt a real sense of accomplishment from finding? Or maybe an easy find, but in a really cool spot that you never knew about...or visited all the time without realizing there was a cache under your nose the whole time? Maybe even one you have discovered was chock full of interesting stuff or the container itself was bizarre or interesting enough to make it noteworthy? Post your suggestions here!
