  1. The route calculation is about 3 times faster on the 60C than on the V. I trialed the 60C for my favorit GPS shop and had it sitting next to my GPS V, same Euro CS5 maps loaded, same route, same everything. Screen updates are also a bit faster. And (what else did you expect!): uploading maps via USB is also faster... 56Mb in 10 minutes, compared to 19Mb in 45 minutes. :D

  2. If there will be a GPS VI (and I sure hope so!), it would have to be better than the 60C and the 76C. That would mean:

    - more than 115Mb of memory (use a 256Mb chip and we get over 200Mb)

    - USB (or USB2)

    - color screen at the same reolution as the V has now (more than the 60C and 76C)

    - faster processor (at least as fast as the 60C)

    - at least 10.000 trackpoints

It would be cool if they added a Bluetooth connection.

If they would discontinue the V line, I would be more into the 76C than the 60C I guess... memory is all. =8- )

  3. They both need power, that's one thing. The V derives the direction from it's movement, which is sufficient most of the time (only when stationary it doesn;t know where N is). The altimeter I find useless... but I live in perhaps the flattest country on the planet (the Netherlands, all heights are in negative numbers... one hill exempt).

  4. I know from personal experience that the V uses the speed to tell when to beep for a turn. I do a lot of highway driving here in the Netherlands (Europe) and the V beeps at 3 kms ahead when at 120km/h, but at 3.2 or so kms when doing 140km/h. I guess it's beeping about 1.5 minutes before the turn. icon_smile.gif

  5. It involves desoldering the 32MB memorychip inside, reading it's contents, programming it to a 128MB chip and soldering it inside the V.

This is done now and looks promising.

In between either you need to reprogram the 128Mb chip to set it's size so Mapsource knows how large it is, or patch Mapsource to tell it how large your V's memory is. This is currently tested.

So, all looks good, but there s no final product yet.

  6. Here in the Netherlands, we have the "Elfstedentocht", an iceskating race following the eleven cities of Friesland, one of our provinces. It also is a geocache, with microcaches in every city.

I've done it, on a cache event, along with 15 others and thought is was great!

  7. You could then mark all current commercial caches like that and approve commercial (looking) caches.

And Jeremy could only approve commercial caches from members, or make a rule that any truely commercial cache also creates a nice rebate for GPS showing groups. So, if you want to have a commercial cache in your movie cinema that will be fine but you have to give everyone that shows up with a GPS or uses the word "geocaching" a 20% rebate on admission. Every time, always. Or, donate 20% of the admission fee to geocaching.com for every log. Also: admission fees should be made very clear upfront.

Ofcourse, no one is forced to log those caches.

  8. Hi!

This year I plan to go to Tenerife, but there are no digital maps for my Garmin available for the island (only City Select 5 has some coverage around Puerto de la Cruz or so). So I intend to create my own Mapsource map for Tenerife, but for that I need as many waypoints and tracks on Tenerife as possible. I hope the geocaching comunity can help me.

If you have tracks and/or waypoints from Tenerife, I would like to have them. If possible with some comments added to them, so I can calibrate my raster map with the waypoints and use the tracks as verification that the calibration is correct. Any format will do, but Mapsource or Oziexplorer format is preferred.

Ofcourse, the map I intend to create will be downloadable after completion. =8-) And I will gladly answer any questions you have.

    Thanks in advance,
