Is there a point to this?

Yup, and he seems to have made it. :P

seems that I have opened a can of worms here . i was trying to make the point that my first post here was met immediatly by an flame by mopar for cross posting i was shut down by co admin for trying to post a joke as a reply to someones post. because co admin did not agree with my sense of humor and mopar butted in in with his 2 cents worth .i was a newbie at the time in these forums and did not expect to be trounced upon like that. so forgive me guys, for being brought down to the level of debaseing another person here in these forums 10 hail marys and 20 our fathers on me!

  3. The off topic forum is  a special incentive (and I use that term loosely) for "premium" members. In order to assess it as well as the other "features" like Pocket queries and the like, you need to shell out some money for the cause.  In this case, $3 a month.

Personally I think it's worth it, you may not.

edited to add:  you can give it a shot for a month and see if you find the new "features" helpful or entertaining to you. It'll only cost you $3, and no tax.

  4. Compass?  What do you mean?

At the same time I was having GPS problems, my compass, a pretty good Silva, started pointing almost due SOUTH! I was having visions of Lt. Charles Taylor!

this might explain it . it from the arrl solar activity update. it also affects ham radio thats why we monitor it.

Solar activity stayed about the same this week compared to the previous period. Average daily sunspot numbers declined slightly from 32.1 to 28. There weren't any disturbed days. Expect solar flux to stay above 100 for the next 10-12 days. Recurring coronal holes could cause a mild geomagnetic upset around January 2-3. Geomagnetic Institute Prague predicts unsettled to active conditions January 2 and 3, unsettled conditions December 31, January 1 and 4, and quiet to unsettled conditions on January 5-6.

  5. Congratulations and welcome.

It will be educational to read the FAQ at www.geocaching.com/mark and some of the threads on this forum. One of the things you will learn is that you were quite lucky if your gps led you to it. This is a mark with SCALED location, meaning that its location is only approximately known, and its elevation is ADJUSTED, meaning measured and calculated and corrected to very good accuracy. Scaled locations are routinely off by hundreds of feet in many places, although you can sometimes catch on to the trend in your area, and occasionally they are off by tenths of miles.

Other marks will have ADJUSTED locations, which are more accurate than you need to check the functioning of your gps receiver.

Maybe I should qualify this find. it was REALLY! easy as a matter of fact you can pretty much guess where it is from about 300 ft away! it is surrounded by flat level ground , mowed grass, perched on top of a mound about the size of a pitchers mound with a 3 ft wooden stake with surveyors ribbon on it . once i got in the ballpark with the gps i quit looking and beelined right for it . But thanks for the advice though. there is another one close to this one with a pretty complicated description . I will probably go for it next. Thanks to your advice it will be interesting to see where the gps takes me.

  6. Found my first official one today. it was an easy one but way cool. i became interested in benchmarks by a happy accident. i used to fly r/c planes when i lived near atlanta,ga

our flying field was called dynamite hill. (used to store explosives there) our run way was at the top of the hill. one day another pilot lost control of his plane and we went searching for it. we topped another hill where there was a great view. and started looking around. i happened to notice a peice of concrete sticking out of the ground and investigated. it was a benchmark disk it had the elevation and other stuff on it . it struck me as something pretty neat. and i have been looking at the usgs site ever since but never went looking for one till now. this geocaching and benchmark hunting is pretty addictive!

  7. The newly popular adventure game for GPS users, which stands for Global Positioning Systems, a way to locate one another and hidden objects . GAME!! hey this is serious business

Derrick Johnson was the last to be pulled to the top. He was transported to Saint Alfonsis Hospital in Boise, where he is listed under serious condition.

If he was the worst hurt why was he the last to be rescued <_<

  8. Chris,

I would suggest studying for a no code tech license. that is the easiest and fastest way to get your license that will will allow you to operate on VHF/UHF frequencies which are the most popular. it will also allow you to use aprs and possibly talk to the astronauts on the ISS and space shuttle . There are a lot of satellites that you can try too. I have worked hams from california, mexico, wisconsin and colorado, while standing in georgia with a 5 watt walkie talkie. follow this link to the tech question pool. http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/tech2003.txt you can print them out and study them for free. here's a helpfull hint, go through all the answers and hilite the correct one then when you study , you can just remember the correct answer. but be carefull. the order of the answers can change on the test. thats why i suggest you hilite the correct ones. there are 200 questions in the pool but you only have to answer 35 on the test.

If you would like to see where i live via aprs click on this link http://www.phrozen-neon.com/alarc/aprs.php

and in tne upper right hand corner of the page enter kb4put then click submit.

if you have any questions you can email me at kb4put@yahoo.com

good luck hope to see you on the radio

    robert \kb4put

  9. for the more technically inclined (or just plain brave) here is a link to those hard to find garmin connectors. they are called pfrancs and they work on the honor system. just ask and they will send the connectors of your choice then you send either some good swag or cash. I purchased a couple for my gps 12 after cringing at the price garmin wanted for a little wire and some plastic. they are high quality connectors and there are instructions for making up the cables.

  10. my friends and i were coming back from his cabin in southern missouri when we rounded a sharp curve to find a bald eagle sitting on the side of the road. we hit the skids and backed toward it we managed to get pretty close before it flew away . It was incredible I never realized how big they were and had never been that close to one. it was huge!! I guess fate had smile upon us too that day.

  11. I had forgot how to mark a waypoint with my etrex venture. my old gps 12 had a mark button. this one doesn't .so i downloaded the manual from garmin . and in the course of finding out what i wanted to know I saw a waypoint icon for geocaching. way cool! I guess you have hit the big time when a manufacturer supports your hobby! :P

    edit spelling

  12. C'mon, I can't be the only one that uses it to find his car in parking lots. Never go to six flags without it! Not to mention waypointing that funnel cake stand.

whoda thunk it! I used to be an over the road truck driver. I can go from coast to coast and find my destination with no problem. but put me in a parking lot and SHEESH I might as well be in the middle of the ocean. great idea. I now have a new use for my gps
