  1. Try installing Opera, and see if it works there. That would tell you if the problem is with your OS, or Mozilla. I'm guessing your system is either missing a rendering engine, or it's obsolete.

Not going to bother ... just have to get over it and conform to the use of IE even though I hate the browser ... it at least works for the maps ...

and well I am back to pen and paper because I don't get the use of cachemate and gsak ...

  2. Wheel Dog and I were geocaching in Lexington Kentucky Saturday and decided to take in ESPN's Gameday broadcast and the UF-KY game. We were selected as the only Gator Finalists in ESPN's Ultimate Fan contest from Lexington. If you would like to see our video and possibly vote for us, here is a link:

  3. I have given cachemate about a month now ... and it is just not working well for me ...

I really do miss mobi pockets guess I will have to keep looking for an alternative ... or worse on my budget figure out how to purchase a new pda ...

prolly not going to happen anytime soon ... thus I have resorted to going back to pen and paper as it ALWAYS works unless I get the info screwed up LOL !

What problems are you having with Cachemate? It works very well for me, and the programs (GSAK and Cachemate) were brand new to me when I started with them.

Well for one ... you have to pop the file into this other file then you have to slice and dice it then you have to send it to cachemate before you upload it .... its very cumbersome , and on top of it when you need to search for information on ones pda you come up short .. like in having the last 3 logs available to you on top of figuring out just what you need to click on to get any kind of information aside from the cache name.

I find it a bit difficult to use , and lacking information , on top of it now one has to have 2 programs to do what one would do with the file that gc.com used to provide for us.

Its like you have to stand on your head and tilt yer left foot this way , and presto you have acheived some sort of limited information .

Mobi for me and my clie was extremely easy to use . I could search by gc number or cache name . I knew where to find hints when I opened up a page for viewing it was all there the discription to the latest 3 logs .

I understand that change is sometimes difficult but geeeesh ... going paperless this way may not be so practical . You have to understand some of us are just tech. impaired ... and not tech geeks.

I was teaching my elderly neighbor how to use mobi which she was getting used to ... now this , I just dont think I can even begin to show her how cachemate with gsak would work her head would explode !

Cachemate gives you the past 5 logs, same as Mobi did, you just have to scroll down on the past logs page. Also gives you room to make your own notes, plus if needed the hint is right there, you don't have to search a separate appendix for it by waypoint name... May not be pretty, but is way more functional that Mobi ever was!

I find it cumbersome in many ways ... beginning with all the conversion stuff you have to do just to get it to up load data to your pda ... thats the main complaint ... Mobi pockets was just a click and a hotsync and it was there ....

My personal opinion ... sometimes "upgrades" aren't really "upgrades" but more " downgrades" ....

  4. With all the changes that are going on I would like some simple yes or no answers to the 2 following questiong please :

    1) In order to view the maps on web pages am I going to HAVE to change my browser of choice , or is this issue being addressed ... My browser of choice and one I love to use is netscape 7.2 , in which the maps will not function at all.

    2) Will our pocket queries ever include support for mobi pockets in e-book format again or are we who enjoyed having this support be forced into using another option ?

    Thank you

Netscape doesn't even support Netscape 7.2 anymore. Why should anyone else? And what's your aversion to upgrading? Netscape 9.0 runs on all the platforms that 7.2 did.

Yes I know this , however the newer versions of netscape are not bundled with netscape mail .... and 7.2 is. No aversion to an update really , its just that the I prefer to use netscape mail as well .

  5. Lead Dog and Wheel Dog logged a cache on the campus of UK yesterday with Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit while GEOCACHING IN KENTUCKY!! They left me in the hands of family with TWO CATS!! Oh, my!! B)

  7. We were at our home in Florida on vacation from Iowa, It was our last day before going to the airport! I needed to get rid of 2 TB's i picked up in IA before we left.

Found a great little park and I came to the drop off I seen two kids! First thought they were doing the same thing I was there for.

After a closer look, they were taking out stuff.

I went to talk to them and the told me they found this ammo box several weeks ago and checked it everyday! At this point the mother of the two boys came up and was telling me how the boys was getting neat stuff form this ammo box!

I TRIED to explain to her what this was for and the boys should not be taking ANYTHING from here.

She just said it was fun for them and that they found it, well again I told her and the boys they did not find it, that it was hidden only to be found by people doing the GEO caches!

Well I placed the Tb's and contacted the owners of the cache,

The box came up gone and the 2 TB's I put in have never been found!

The owners replced another one well hidden this time!

I just gotta ask one question ..... Why would you then choose to leave the TB's in a cache that you knew was being muggled ? (with the mothers permission no less) ... Personally , perhaps taking the TB's with you may have been a better option .. they may not have gotten where they were going but they probably would still be moving about.

  8. When I open a cache using Mozilla Firefox there is no map that usually shows the location of the cache. It was working fine before the latest site update. Below that map area are the numbers 1 through 10 that you can use to zoom in/out. Above the 1 is a very small square with a dot in the middle. When I click on that square it opens up Google Map Search, but it is just a blank page.

Below the usual map area you have the Online Maps area. I still get nothing when trying to open Geocaching.com Google Maps. The other map options open up OK.

When I use IE as my browser everything works fine.

I opened a ticket up with technical at Groundspeak and they said to put it out to the forum because they don't have an answer. Anybody have any ideas?

It works on Firefox 2.0.0.7 for me, but it wont work with Netscape 7.2

I can confirm that one , I use netscape 7.2 and the maps do not work at all .

  9. Here's a story of a good kind of muggling ...

We received the following email at National HQ here in Bippus, that we thought might be of interest to GEO-ISQ members....

Hello! I found your email through the geocache site. I am not a geocacher- couldn't care less, researched a little because I teach geography and it seemed a cool project until I found how much the GPS thingies cost........then I saw the Spirit Quest stuff. Ok, NOW you got me. I am a cemetery person. I have been in all the cemeteries you showed for Steuben County - many times, sometimes many times a year. I photograph markers. I do cemetery history walks in Circle Hill. I have photographed some of the same markers. You, however, have found some that I have never noticed. NEVER. NEVER. I stand in awe. I lived next to Mt. Zion as a child and I PLAYED in that cemetery, made up stories about the people, thought I knew every stone, and I NEVER saw the balloonist one. (my family alternates between being amazed and laughing, because I'm actually upset about that .) AND - though I have righted flowers, replaced flags religiously, and cleaned out bags of trash, I have NEVER found any of your cache holders. Never. ( I would have noticed if I picked it up as trash. I really am careful, especially about things that might have been left intentionally and got moved from a grave.) Now I want to go find one and write in the log. I may even look for others. I even got a geocache login so I could write to you. Whoever Shadow is, and the rest of Spirit Quest, I stand in awe. Your research is remarkable. I should know- I've done the same and used it in the talks.

You don't know me. I'm a faceless email and you have no proof I'm not a kook, but if you're in the Steuben County area again, I would love to meet you. I would also like to help replace whatever has gone missing at Circle Hill Cemetery, and you're right - the Dan Webster story is the best. I also have more background for Henry Janes, who died descending Mount McKInley. Thank you for listening.

  12. I have an older PDA a Sony Clie .. .I found that Mobi pockes was very easy to use and I really enjoyed it , cachemate leaves me flat , its a bit more difficult to use and you have to jump through hoops to get all the conversion stuff done just to upload to your pda , then the formating of cache mate is rather difficult to adjust to as well .....

Please bring back the mobi pocket support !!

  14. It would also be great to see us get back to being a much more friendly bunch ... wherein we see a cache is in need of repair .. and offer to give assistance to the owner if he would like it .

Myself I think I would have offered to help either cache owner here repair /replace there cache for them if I were in a position to do so .

If I was from out of town and found either cache I probably would log a needs maint. log on them . Or at least made a comment about the condition of the cache in my log.

  15. Props for taking the higher road and not hiding a cache in a cemetery. Its not the place to play this game.

    ~heavy sigh~

I'm wondering if your opinion is based on you considering this hobby a "game."

There have been long discussions on whether the hobby we enjoy is a game or something else. I say it's something else as while one can make a game out of it there are elements that are closer to other hobbies I doubt anyone would call a game. Is sightseeing a game?

Someone who puts a cache in a cemetery for the numbers is playing a game. However, if someone wants to highlight a person or the history of the cemetery then it's more like sightseeing and is not a game.

Don't get me wrong. I like the "game" of challenges on individual caches. I couldn't care less about the "game" of accumulating smilies. What I really like is the sightseeing, the places that make me go "wow," or places that I would have never visited or known about without a cache--especially those that never make to the tourism books.

Geocaching is what you make it. If you want to make it a game then it's a game--for you.

There are plenty on cemetery caches out there that are not disrespectful, are educational, and not part of any "game."

That was very very well said CR !

  16. Well we have in fact spent much time solving puzzle caches only to find that when we also got to the said cache site that it was still out of our grasp .. why .. well its because we did find the cache but we didn't sign the log ... you see we couldnt reach the cache as it was way up in a tree and we did not want to risk life or limb ( the trees or ours ) in order to retreive said cache . This was a dangerous cache we loved solving the puzzle and we at least know we did find the cache however we couldnt log a find .

So you see everyone has stories of such a nature . Should we complain about them all ... I think if that actually happened there would eventually be no caches left to find ... or no new caches being placed . If we are going to discuss dangerous caches lets include them all .

    Star

Let's discuss them, start the topic. This one is on Cross Road Memorial Crosses and geocaches.

    B);)

Discuss what ... something that you dont like but someone else may ?

But only as long as it is on "your" terms right ... and as long as one agrees with the op or those that do ?

Yeah think I got it now ...

  17.

There is a very simple solution to that ...... DONT HUNT THEM if you dont like em ... not every cache has something that you are going to like , not every location will you like ... some you can look at the cache page and just say no to ... No place is it written that one has to find every cache placed ... Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh I just don't understand why people feel they have to degrade put down or *insert 4 letter word here* about something they can simply avoid if they choose to .

    Star

I think you indirectly answered your own question -- information about cache quality and desirability is not something that can always be found via the cache page. So all too often you actually have to go to the cache site (spending money and time) only to discover that it is a cache that you do not wish to look for.

Also some people worry about the overall respectability of Geocaching in the public's eyes. Having a newspaper report that geocaching is all about stopping on busy and dangerous highways in order to morbidly look at roadside accident sites would not be very conducive to the public appreciating our hobby, eh? Fortunately I do not think that any newspaper has reported such ... but it could happen.

  18. After my earlier post I cached over the weekend and actually found my first three of these. 2 of the 3 were quite dangerous in blind spots with fast moving traffic. One had the cache actually hidden behind the cross.

I am not sure how I feel about them except that they were quite dangerous.

Oh! I would be so ticked off at that!

Gas is just too expensive to go out and hunt for something you don't even want to be looking for in the first place! (Did that make sense?!)
