  1. Is it legit to send a TB via mail to another cacher? A friend started caching recently and is enjoying it with his kids. I have one I was considering sending him, then he could grab it from me and hide it on his next outing. Don't want to do it if it's frowned upon.
  2. Just for terrain - the difficulty needs to be how hard it is to find it once you're there. The help centre sort of explains it - well, it has an ideal guide anyway. Here Makes Sense To Me, thanks
  3. Another thread that answers a question for me to a degree so again, instead of starting a new one I was simply curious if a hide on an island that requires the use of a watercraft of some sort makes it a 5? Is that both for difficulty and terrain?
  4. Morning, instead of starting another thread on the same subject I hope it's Ok if I "hijack" This one. I hid my first cache yesterday. It's on an island in the middle of a local river. It's small, maybe 300 ft x 200 ft. Maybe I should have read a little more in averaging and understood that my Oregon had the feature, etc but I didn't. I used the reposition here feature like a dozen times over the course of 10 minutes. I get it,not ideal but consisering the location ,this little island, will this suffice? Looking forward to hiding more and being as creative and specific as possible with future hides.
  5. Thanks, that swhat I did but wasnt sure if I could do an upload or anything. Thanks for the reply
  6. Am I able to upload way points to the site? The reason I would want o in this case is that I grabbed a series of caches to do this AM and there was no mention of the parking lot I stumbled upon after hopping a fence up the road.
  7. Not too big of a milestone but logged my 50th today. Back into caching after a very short try of it a couple years ago but am enjoying it much more this go around with the new GPS.
  8. I checked it out and it's on the back burner for the moment. Still feeling my way around bc but it see it's potential value. Thanks for the reply
  9. Im going to look it up after thi spost but is this GSAK a replacement tool for basecamp or in conjuntion with BC?
  10. That's a great feature. I'm gonna give it a try. I also realized this am that the pq gpx on there now is so small of a file that pulling it off and adding the dozen or so on the wouldn't be such a big deal to do. This feature is something that would be cool to use for say, on my way to work or shopping etc. As always appreciate the help and guidance from the forums.
  11. If the caches are already in there as part of a PQ though, would they load a 2nd time?
  12. OK maybe this is a dumb question but here goes. I already have all the caches that are 10 miles within my home location. I wanted to run out for some quick grabs with my gf wed evening and was wondering is there anyway to graph out or route a dozen or so caches without removing what is already on my GPS? Im not sure if I want to do this necessarily just sort of thinking out loud I guess. I have an Oregon 550.
  13. Just reading around the different topics and I'm new but it is sign, date, and list who was with me in logs. On a related note what it power trail, e. T., and FTF?
  14. Glad you mentioned "scratch the surface". Put a screen protector on it ASAP. The Oregons' touch screens scratch pretty easily and of course when Geocaching you'll often be using it with dirty hands (if you're doing it right). There are some nice ones made to fit the Oregon specifically. Zagg is one brand that is highly recommended, but pricey. I've had success buying a 3-pack of less expensive iPhone screen protectors at WalMart and trimming them to size. Glad you reminded me of those. I need to get them ASAP as you said because I can see that happening easily. Check this out on AMZN: PROTECTION FILM. 6 IN 1 PACK - GARMIN OREGON 550 GPS NAVIGATION - ANTI SCRATCH CLEAR LCD SCREEN PROTECTORS SHIELDS FILMS. 2LMP http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005C8U032 [ Moderator edit to remove Amazon Referral code. ]

  16. Bought my first handheld device with no previous experience or comparison with the exception of a few helpful folks posting in this forum but I've only had the Oregon 550 for a week and love it. After a few trial and errors I have it all loaded up with what I wanted and it's pretty awesome and I'm sure I haven't even scratched the surface on its full potential but I'm caching and driving with it. Picked it up for 260 with free shipping on amazon
  17. Thanks Im good on the profiles and I have direct routing selected in my geo profile, that what was causing my routing error yesterday. The routing for the OSM street maps is where I am stuck currently. I get that same error but I am set up for driving and in my auto profile. I am taking and moving all of my topos & trail maps into the device to make enough room on 4GB card to house the big OSM map to see f that changes my issue for soem reason as Im not certain what that 500MB map I mentioned is, i deleted it from the card as well. I went back to my original post from last weekend and found my 8GB question it sounds like you have an 8GB in your 550T, any reason I wouldnt be able to use one in my "non-T" model alandb that you are aware of? Hard to say what happened (im guessing that 500MB map i had loaded wasnt a street map but unsure) but I put the big ole street map on the 4G card and it works like a charm, routes and all now. Clearly need a bigger card if I am to use this and the other maps, at least I think I do. I can leave the topos on the device but I found an excuse to buy a new card so Im gonna use it. Thanks for the help and guidance.

  19. Thanks again. OK so here is where I am at. Making progress I think. First off went out yesterday and logged some finds. Yay! Took my gf and her two boys who have never went. Everyone spotted a cache first except me haha. After first find, I tried to go to the next and started getting this error:Route calculation error, maps dont have routable roads in this area. After a bit of frustration I was able to determine that the routing type in the geocaching profile was set to driving (automobile, whatever it says). Fixed that and ended up with a pretty successful day of caching in a nice park close to home. Real issue I now have and back to the street maps/driving. As mentioned I downloaded the open streets map but I couldnt get it to load as its too big (does anyone know for sure if the 4GB limit is real on the Oregon, have read conflicting reports?) so I added this one 500MB-lon_-85.06_to_-80.68.2013-02-12.gmapsupp.img which I think is a street map for basically fl for the slice of coords listed and I have it enabled under my automobile profile and all other maps disabled. When i select a waypoint ( one example was a parking waypoint for a park we are going to today fo rmore fun)or place on map (I selected a school) and I get the aforementioned error (route calculation error...). Any ideas? Is the map I have loaded not a real "driving" map? In map screen under settings in my automobile profile it shows enabled - family name and says OSM street map underneath that. P.S. what is worldwide DEM basemap,NR? Thanks for everyone's time
  20. The comments can be sent as "Field Notes" for each cache, to make cache logs easier. Along with a Found log (or DNF), I'll add a short comment about what I left or took, cache condition, or any short phrase to remind me of what I should type in the cache log. I usually don't type the log in the field, just some shorthand. http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=128 I was looking around this AM for a topic on this and PQs so I will ask here. I used my Oregon 550 for the first time yesterday and found a handful of caches. SO as I found them we marked them as such and I used the comment field not sure of its purpose. SO do I still have to go to each cache page and log as well as add my notes? I wasn't sure if there was a way to upload or "sync" my PQ with my account and it would mark found and add my comment. Feedback and replies are appreciated. OK I found the field note FAQ so I see what I can do with my comments but I guess this may answer my other question as well, I still have to log my finds/DNFs, etc? EDIT: meaning I see that it does in fact answer my question. I logged all 6 of my notes from yesterday, using the entries from my field notes. That's convenient, I wasn't sure how the device helped with this step as I just got it and the little bit of caching I did previously was with my droid which obviously can log straight from device, in the field.

  22. Yep grabbed that one and one called "generic" I think. So just drag onto sd and that's it? Renaming of course as splashy mentioned. I grabbed it using the torrent btw.
  23. I went back to the other thread and I am following you now. Grabbing a couple of those maps for routing/driving to see how they work
  24. Appreciate your help. The few maps I have downloaded had installers so I didnt have to deal with img files (at least I dont think I did)to rename. I only grabbed two trail maps and what appears to be a nice Florida topo. I think Im good for now as I want to get out there and learn to use this device and see how the maps help, etc. Im guessing the the img files are the ones that go straight to the GPS, am I following you correctly? NOt clear I guess on the direct to GPS maps you are talking about. Bear with me and my dumb questions but I appreciate everyone's help. VIdeos are definitely getting watched here and there and trying to do some reading too
  25. Yep, Im seeing that. SO I can apparently have numerous "maps" of one area, each with different overlays/layers I guess or so it seems. I do have Win7 64bit. I will check out that thread. I will poke around in the forums over there too.
