  1. That looks familiar - is that Whiteside Mt in NC by any chance? I mostly cache alone so I'm free to take as much time as I need or want to. When I do cache with others, I warn them ahead of time that I'll want to stop and take pictures. Then I usually take up the rear so I can stop as long as I want and then hurry to cache up.
  2. It was gelatinous. I was back up there this past weekend and checked it out again (I had it waymarked ). It had dried / shrivelled up some. I poked it with a stick and it was kind of rubbery. There aren't any pine trees around there but there were other trees that could have been the source. And, no, I didn't smell it.
  3. Just found a picture of Black Cherry tree sap - it certainly looks like the same stuff.
  4. Funny you should describe it that way because I spent quite a bit of time googling "gelatinous" and "goo" to no avail. Anyway, it was about 5-6" in length. At first I thought it was some kind of scat but on closer inspection I didn't see any fur, seeds, or other plant or animal parts in it. I didn't really think it was a fungus because it didn't seem to be attached to anything - it was pretty much sitting out in the middle of the trail. There was also a smaller blotch nearby - maybe about 2". It seems to be mostly transparent. I'm thinking that some kind of sap might be the right answer. Here's the smaller blob:
  5. Anybody have any idea what this is? I was hiking yesterday in NC and this was on the trail.
  6. Here's a bookmark of GA AT caches one of our GGA members put together.
  7. There are some great caches nearby. Some that I have done: Where is the Cache? GC66A0 DeSoto Falls Cache GC21E DeSoto Between Falls GCH1JD Blood Mountain GC915 Helton Creek Falls GCE7F2 Ben's Boggs Creek Bonanza GCA30B From Jarrard To Horsebone GC9EF6 Some that I haven't gotten around to yet: Slaughter Ambush GC1BERH Flying Pig of Georgia #1, #2, #3 GC171NF, GC17PBJ, GC181K3 You might also want to post to the Georgia Geocachers Association's Forums (you'll need to create an account).
  8. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
  9. This gets my vote - or any of the variations that follow (although I prefer vowels included )
  10. Yay! Glad you got it to work. I really like the file feature of the Magellan (but they could really work on their manual )
  11. Thanks for your help, but I can't seem to change the Geocache line in the Active Setup to read... SD/Geocaches. This may be a silly question, but I can't seem to figure out how to hit select.. I've tried the jostick, as you would normally do to enter, but all it does is just move back up. This is so frustrating!! Any additional advice? Yes, as you say, you should use the joystick to enter. Try this: After “Select File” (step 5 above) You should see …l Memory\Geocaches\ (this is the header; you can't select it) Up One Level list of files (if you’ve saved any to your internal memory) Highlight “Up One Level” and hit Enter You should now see Internal Memory\ (again, this is the header) Up One Level Background Maps Etc. Highlight “Up One Level” and hit Enter You should now see: Internal Memory SD Card Highlight “SD Card” and hit Enter and you should see SD\Geocaches\ (header) Up One Level Files you’ve loaded to your SD card Now you can toggle down and select the file you want as your default.
  12. Here's what I do: 1) Hit the Menu button 2) Choose Preferences 3) Choose Active Setup 4) Scroll to the bottom of the Active Setup screen - Geocaches line - and hit Enter 5) You should now have the choice to Select File or turn Geocache File Off. Choose Select File. 6) You now should see the list of files to select. If you've got your files on an SD card, you might have to select Up One Level until you can select the SD card. Hope that helps.
  13. Here are some of my suggestions - based, of course, on nearby caches. The cache examples I give might not be as difficult as you want but will give you an idea of the area. Also, some of these can be more or less difficult depending on your approach: 1) Benton MacKaye Trail. Sample caches: Little Bitty Dial Toccoa Suspension Bridge 2) Bartram Trail. Sample caches: Rabun Bald Scaly Mountain Waterfall (in NC) Scaly Mountain Summit (in NC) "Bears, tygers, wolves, and wildcats" 3) Cohutta Wilderness. Sample cache - Jacks River Photo Op (a virtual - but a good one) 4) Rich Mountain Wilderness - any of the caches on Rich Mountain done when the gate is closed (it's only open during hunting season.) Nearby cache - Rocky Mountain 5) Pinhoti Trail - my bookmark of Pinhoti trail caches
  14. So what is the point of uploading them, if you are not interested in what others think of them? From what I can see, yours are pretty good, but of course, you don't want to know that! I can't speak for Kit Fox, but I also don't want cachers commenting on my photos so I'll answer the question based on my reason . While I know some (maybe many) people consider online logs are for the cache owners benefit, I consider my online logs are for my benefit. I use them as a record of my time caching and that includes pictures. I don't really want or care to have others comment on my pictures.
  15. Okay, kind of a funny story about this. Awhile back, I tried for a cache out of state and the hint for the first stage was "Tazclimber hide". Well, I didn't realize that Tazclimber was a local cacher and thought I was looking for a hide on some plant called a tazclimber (in my defense, there were lots of vines where I zeroed out). Come to find out later that a "Tazclimber hide" means under a rock. Needless to say I didn't find the stage or the cache.
  16. Along those lines - I have been suggesting more and more options in the PQ's to more closely target caches I would enjoy going after. I could get a very decent radius with more options. And I could change my mind and get a different set as often as I needed (up to 5 times per day). Excellent suggestion. I'm not really interested in having a PQ for each state but expanding the PQ options would be something I would like.
  17. No, you are not alone in this - my brother does this ALL the time. I, of course, would never do this.
  18. Depends on your Magellan version. Magellan Explorists 100, 200 & 300 - no, they can't be connected to your computer; you have to enter coords manually. Magellan Explorists 210, 400, 500, & 600 - yes. You'd have to check on other Magellan GPS units - these are the ones I know.
  19. I'm sure you just misspoke or I misinterpreted what you just typed, but a friendly reminder: Geocoins and Travel Bugs are not trade items. If you have nothing to trade, you can still take one to move it along. That being said, I'll usually put something in a cache (like a TTJ wooden nickel) if I take a coin/TB out, mostly because I've seen too many logs that say "Took cool swag, left TB." Ack! THEY AREN'T TRADE ITEMS!!!! Well, actually some geocoins are trade items - it just depends on whether or not they're trackable, and, if trackable, whether or not they've been activated. For instance, I have a personal geocoin that IS a trade item.
  20. When you go to your account, at the top right hand side of the page there's a tab called "Member Features". Click on that and it should give you the date you set up your premium account.
  21. Well, I'm getting the same errors both at home and on my computer at work. Edit to add: home computer: Windows XP; IE6
  22. I totally agree with this. Hints are not required - it's up to the cache owner. Don't let the whiners get to you.
  23. Same problems. Windows XP / IE 6
  24. I may be reading this incorrectly but it sounds like you think someone is taking coins they find out of caches and replacing them with the replicas. More likely, they made replicas of coins they purchased and therefore own. It might not be fun to find these, but it's their coin and they have the right to send out copies instead of the real thing. However, people who send out replicas are probably doing so because a fair amount of coin travelers do go missing so just be aware if you decide to send out geocoins. You might want to check out the geocoin forum to see what people do to help prevent coins from ending up in private collections. But beware - coin collecting can be a real addiction !
  25. Yeah, that makes me shudder as well as the "A Event Cache".
