  1. I can partially answer the "who are the 2006 winners"... WE WON the September - Freedom contest...with this picture: We received the GPS today. Thanks to everyone that voted for us, the judges, and Jeep. I'm still in shock!
  2. At what age a child should have his/her own account is not really age-dependant. Some kids can handle it at 9, some not until 16. Our daughter is almost 11 and doesn't want to be bothered with typing logs for the caches we find (although it would be good keyboarding practice). I told her that she would not have her own account until she is willing to manage it herself...I'm not typing 3-4 different log entries for all the members of this house. Now, she is happy being part of our family's account. The girls help us place all of our caches, but we do it together, as a family. Some of the times the hiding locations that our oldest picks are inappropriate (fragile environment, etc). So, we explain why we should not place it there, and find a better one. The girls always help with cache maintenance visits...I feel that it shows them responsibility (plus they like digging thru the loot and making trades). If kids are placing caches, it should be with parental supervision/guidance. If my daughter had her own account and her caches, I would probably screen the cache visit logs and emails thru her account before I would let her read them. I've never had any problem with anything that the local cachers have posted, but I guess I'm just an over-protective mom. No, I would not shield her from complaints (that's part of life), but I guess I would just want to make sure it was appropriate for her to read. She is not allowed to use the internet without supervision (no, we don't hover, but we are in the same room, and look over her shoulder periodically), and this would be no different.
  3. Thanks for the laugh, Mushtang. I always suspected that this game attracted people who are as geeky as I am! (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) OKAYYYYY, but it's "Darmok and Jilead at Tanagra." It's ONLY "Shaka when the walls fell," if you CAN'T find the cache. And it's "Sokath, his eyes uncovered" when a muggle is finally converted to a cacher
  4. Thanks for the laugh, Mushtang. I always suspected that this game attracted people who are as geeky as I am! (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) LOL! Another "geeky" person here! Suddenly, I'm in the mood to watch TNG.
  5. We've been questioned a few times (kids make for great cover while caching, so we don't get questioned often). I've told folks that we are doing a scavenger hunt and that seems to satisfy them. Once the person seemed more interested, so my oldest daughter explained geocaching to them.
  6. But he glows in the dark now Just kidding!
  7. One fact remains...you don't know what was stored in there. Maybe it was something harmless, maybe it was not. You could pull a sample and have it analyzed, but that would cost $$. I would feel uncomfortable hiding anything in there unless I knew for sure that it was safe.
  8. Add our name to the list of those seeking a Garmin geocoin (from the Chicago grand-opening). Trade list HERE! A couple of coins not included in our list...antique gold astroblade & copper DD (only 30 minted and only for rare trades, this coin qualifies...lol).
  9. I was in Girl Scouts until 8th grade and am currently a second generation Girl Scout leader (my mom was a leader, too). I have been with the same group of girls for the past 6 years. I've already introduced the girls to geocaching...we attended a CITO event last spring and they earned the Let's Go Geo badge from the Erie Shores Council. They LOVED it.
  10. Yes, a local group (Central Coast GeoCachers) did a coin a while back: I thought so, but my memory is not what it used to be, and cannot always be trusted. I did a Monterey Bay search in one of the geocoin galleries and came up empty (now I know why...it is listed under CCGC). Thanks for confirming that sometimes my gray matter still works.
  11. ...and besides, it's only half of the Monterey Bay on the map. Where is Santa Cruz? Is there a Monterey Bay geocoin?
  12. My daughter's Flat Stanley just visited Monterey Bay with Sonny & Sandy (PodCacher). That should make her appreciate the coin even more.
  13. I think that was last month's offering from USAGeocoins
  14. Ours is 3/4 girl too (4/5 if you count the cat - but she's never been caching).
  15. USA geocoins is releasing 1 per month. Sagittarius is currently up for preorder. I don't know which month they started with.
  16. As a famous "lost boy" once said...All it take is faith and trust. Oh! And something I forgot. Dust! Yep, just a little bit of pixie dust.
