Is there something risque about the site? I just tried to get it here at work (during my lunch time) but instead I received the dreaded big red hand and a STOP!! - ACCESS DENIED! message. I suppose my attempt probably popped up on some IT geek's screen at the same time and I will be dutifully chastised. This may be my last communication forever from this locale....

Since some of us are relating past experiences...
I also recently flew American Airlines, from Nebraska to Charlotte. I wanted to try my GPSR while in flight. I approached the co-pilot in the boarding area and asked him about using it. He was very courteous and very knowledgeable. He stated that interference IS possible from GPSRs, although fairly unlikely. He elaborated that he knew our little handheld devices are receivers and not transmitters. He said that many of the older aircraft in airline fleets do not have the "interference rejection" (my term) capabilities of newer aircraft. I presume it deals somewhat with less effective shielding, as mentioned previsously in this topic, as well as improved solid state technology in newer aircraft.
One aircraft model he specifically mentioned that has seen some interference effects from on-board consumer electronics are the older McDonnel Douglas MD-80s - just like the one we were about to board. After his explanation, he said that he preferred I not use my GPSR while in flight and I didn't. I'm a firm believer that the flight crew (especially the pilots) are THE bosses while I'm on that aircraft.
If he had said it was okay to use it and I had it turned on in flight, but I later read in the airline magazine not to use it - would I have turned it off? Probably, I can't say for sure.
It does seem that a couple of the responders to this topic took an "I'll turn it on until they tell me to turn it off" approach without asking airline policy from a member of the air crew. That's not right - for their own safety and for the safety of others.
It's an exaggeration, I suppose, but I wonder if those people would turn off their GPSR if the plane were to suddenly do a snap roll and the altimeter on their little machine were to suddenly start rapidly decreasing from 40,000' toward zero?

I haven't hidden as many as some who may be responding to this post, but three of my four caches were approved within 24 hours - and the fourth within 48 hours. Both of my virtuals were within 24 hours, but I suppose it was partly because it was obvious to the reviewers that they had to be virtual because they are located in a wildlife refuge.
Smoothing the process? My experience has been that I'm surprised the administrators get them approved as quickly as they do. They do a great job and I'm quite satisfied.
Hopefully, by the time you read this yours will will have already been approved.

Here's a link to a nicely done little piece about Geocaching that aired on South Dakota Public radio last week.
Apparently they called Jeremy too for some input. I like the generally positive image the piece gives.

While I agree that there are many things out there that definitely should not be placed in caches, I have some reservation about how much responsibility/right I have to make the decision as to what is right or wrong to be in the cache. IMHO the cache owner should be doing periodic maintenance on his/her own cache and they can add/remove anything they darn well want to. Just yesterday I was reading a geocaching thread talking about the large quantities of caches that various people had placed. I agree it's admirable that people have the time and resources to plant that many, but the first thought that came to my mind is - I wonder if they also maintain their 40 or 50 caches? Too many caches are being initiated and then mostly or totally ignored by their owners. This is one of the main reasons for junky, trash-laden caches. My motto has been Don't plant it if you ain't gonna maintain it. What do you think?

I don't think anyone has mentioned the $50 rebate that is currently available (until 7/6/03) from Garmin. That was a big selling point for me when I purchased my Legend about 4 months ago to "augment" my eTrex basic yellow. I just looked and noticed that the rebate also applies to the Vista.
If you do plan on taking advantage of the rebate you have to be sure to purchase from an "authorized" Garmin dealer - be very careful to verify seller's credentials if you purchase on eBay.
Out here in the flatlands, I don't see a lot of use for an altimeter, but I do realize that it would be very useful in territory with more terrain variation. The compass in any of the eTrex units does the job for me (I don't stand still and look at my compass that often).
One thing that I didn't pay much attention to when I bought my Legend was internal memory. Now that I have Metroguide and have downloaded some maps, I've found that 8 mb just isn't quite enough sometimes. The Vista's 24 mb of memory is a worthwhile consideration if you plan on purchasing any of the Mapsource software in the future.
I think you will be happy with either unit.

Your tired old eyes and mine too. I have the same problem with my Legend. As much as I like it, the high resolution (and small) screen can be a challenge to read and the contrast adjustment doesn't quite take it where it needs to be. I'm anxious to hear if your magnifier brainstorm works out - keep us informed.
Until then, I guess I'll just keep carrying/using my narrow little reading glasses that fold into a plastic case about the size of a large ink pen. Good Luck!

Can anyone tell me "how come" when I call up a Forums topic all I see under the Member's Name is a little box with a red "X" in it instead of all the neat avatar photos that everyone has?
I'm sure it's just a setting adjustment I need to make, but I don't know where to start.

I'd enjoy putting faces together with some of the many names I've come across. I'd even be willing to help get the word out to some of the Omaha-Area cachers who I know would also be very interested.

Looks like a good set of coordinates to me.
I find a location west of Colorado City and immediately west of Klipfel Meadow at approximate Elevation 8450'.
I suggest using LostOutdoors.com or Topozone.com (or one of several other good programs) to enter the coordinates and check out the location.

You don't mention if you're looking for new or used. In either case, I've purchased two eTrex's (a yellow and a Legend, both new) through eBay with very favorable results.
My best recommendation is to be sure to have all questions about the item answered to your satisfaction before you place your bid. Also, don't be in too much of a hurry to get a particular item....there are always quite a few up for auction.

I just bought my 3rd one off eBay a couple of days ago. I hope the 3rd time is a charm like they say.
My first one works fine, except it has a little slide switch on the plug where you can select different voltage outputs. I didn't think about it before I bought it, but now I know that if I accidentally move that switch to a higher voltage before or during the time it is plugged into my eTrex, it will destroy it. I recommend avoiding that type of adapter.
I also purchased my second one thru eBay. It doesn't have a "coiled" cord (which I much prefer) and the plug that attaches to the eTRex isn't the exact type as the one provided by Garmin - so it occasionally slips out or loses electrical connection, and then my Legend automatically shuts itself off after 30 seconds. This is a factory feature so it won't discharge the batteries if it accidentally loses electrical connection with the power supply.
My third adapter has a coiled cord, an adapter plug that is exactly like the one Garmin uses, has a little in-line ferrite "bead" (which is supposed to reduce possible radio interference), gold plated connectors....yeah it's kool! I overcame the urge to cut off the little nib on the plug because it wouldn't let me push the plug all the way onto my Legend. I discovered later that if I push a little harder on the plug that the little nib snaps into a fitting molded into the case of the Legend and holds the plug in place so it won't disengage. It cost me $14 plus $2.99 shipping - darned good deal in my book.
It's item ePC4 (4 ft.) or ePC6 (6ft.) at this site.

At some time in one of your conversations, you may want to mention the particular type of cache container you plan on using....especially if it is an ammo can.
While asking permission at my town's local park board meeting to place a cache, they suggested I also inform the local police chief simply so the local officers knew what was going on and what the container looked like (just in case someone found it accidentally). It was a very good suggestion and the park board, police chief and I had a some nice conversations regarding geocaching.

Out here in hickville (the midwest), the Red Green Show is all over PTV on the weekends - it's very popular. I can watch one episode air on Nebraska PTV and then change channels to Iowa PTV and watch a different episode.

I'm tellin' ya - it won't be long before we can have outpatient surgery to embed a tiny chip in our head and we won't have to carry those cumbersome GPSRs around any more. We can just think about where we want to go and follow the trail in our mind. I'm just not sure how we'll be able to call up topo maps and satellite photos. ;-)

Forget My Previous Question....I don't know why or how it happened, but for some reason the image now appears on both the TB description page and the TB Thumbnails page.

For my first TB, I uploaded three photos on the initiation page. After completing the TB descriptions I then selected the photo I want to use as a thumbnail image. However, for some reason the image won't display on the TB thumbnails page...all I get is a white square with a red X. I probably did something wrong by not using one of the magic codes I was supposed to.
Can anyone help me out here?? Thanks!
P.S. A big thankyou also to Markwell who told me how to do the coding to enter a link into my TB description!

Sorry Wolfpack...you won't know who the mole is until next week.
MW25...I may be wrong, but I don't think the GPSs were eTrex. They looked more like a Magellan item (although I'm not too familiar with their line of handhelds).

New Hide & Seek Format Question

I'm in kind of a hurry tonite and don't have time to search through a hundred forum posts to search for the answer to a question.... I hope someone can help.
A BIG difference that I just noticed between the old Hide & Seek page and the new one is that I don't seem to have the ability to "check" and download coordinates for multiple caches at one time to my GPSR like I could with the old format. It appears that I have to open each cache description page individually and then download coordinates. Please tell me it ain't so....am I missing something here??
