  1.

The two biggest Dartmoor Ranges are NOT CROW land they are common land and therefore the statement re CROW in the guidelines does NOT apply.

(Emphasis is mine) Minor point - in England (and possibly UK) there is really no such thing as "Common Land" - land owned by all in common - all land is owned by somone or some organisation, and thus will have someone or some committee that could give landowners' permission for a chache to be placed.

The term "Common Land" on Dartmoor means land which is owned by someone but grazed by several farmers that have the right to graze that particular common, a common could have as many as 20 "commoners" grazing their animals.

  2. I see the Dartmoor National Park Authority has updated their website to include a page on geocaching, they have a list of guidelines. The first two say:

    • Always obtain the landowner’s permission before hiding a cache.

    • Please acknowledge that you have obtained the landowner permission when you publish the cache details on geocaching.com or any other geocaching website.

If all caches were removed which didn’t have landowner permission, I doubt if any would be left on Dartmoor.

It seems a lot of caches are put out on the back of the letterboxers agreement, maybe it is about time the geocachers got their own agreement sorted out with the authority.

  3. As a waymarker I have entered hundreds of waymarks, I also reviewed hundreds of other people’s waymarks in various categories. To check the co-ordinates I use http://benchmarks.org.uk/map.php and http://www.flashearth.com/

Between these two sites you can get a good idea whether the co-ordinates are correct or not.

So now this technology is available to all, why do the reviewers allow caches in inappropriate places such as churches. In the past I have collected a cache under a seat in a church porch, a cache fixed to the back of a drainpipe on a church, and a cache in a parameter wall of a church, the latter is in the process of being moved to a more suitable site. I can not see any vicar/Church Council giving permission for a cache that close to a church.

If you must go into an area around a church you would be very welcome to waymark it instead of planting a cache!!
