  1. And here we go again. There must be a law of nature that ensures all topics that start off with a sensible discussion containing a religious element descend into chaos. I'm not religious myself, tending towards the Richard Dawkins side of the discussion but I do think it ought to be possible for all sides to stay civil.

    Sigh!!

  2. Yes, this is confusing and inconvenient to the many non-American users of this site. However it has been discussed in these forums several (many?) times over the past year or two. If I remember correctly TPTB have said that this should be a feature of the new site design when that is released.

  3. I was with your reviewer over the weekend and I can tell you that on Saturday, despite being on a campsite he drove into the nearest town to try and publish at least some of the 100 or more caches waiting for his sole attention. As his family was with him camping it is understandable that he had only limited time and didn't get round to yours.

On Sunday he was at the Mega event chatting to nearly 1000 cachers, needless to say that didn't leave him much time to do any reviewing.

On Monday he had to take his wife to hospital.

In the UK the normal turnround time is measured in hours, not days. Frequently it can be in minutes. This weekend was totally exceptional as a 3 day turnround is almost unheard of. So be patient, and as Keystone suggests, maybe use the time to do some caching. :(

  4. Wake up, look out of the window... see for yourself, lol.

Well in my little corner of the camping field I didn't have to look out of the window in the early hours of Sunday morning, I could hear the "Yorkshire sunshine" beating down on my tent. :(

Also while doing the cache series around the nearby reservoir the heavens opened again and I was soaked. :( Fortunately I had a change of clothes in the car so I ended up nice and dry at the main event. :(

  5. Where are you guys looking??? :(

Actually if you look at the list of pinned topics at the top of the UK forum the Car Boot thread has its last entry dated 8th May.

This is the problem. Many people, I'm sure, look to the list of topics to see when the last entry was made before reading it. If I see a thread I'm interested in has had a recent entry I'll go and look at it. However if there's nothing new since I last looked why would I open the thread again?

With the Car Boot thread you could tell at a glance that someone had made a contribution but not any more. Now you have no idea if something new has been posted without actually going into the thread. When Michael explained that everything was still available after Deci was forced to move the thread I was mollified, but seeing how it works in practice I am forced into another "U" turn. :(

I now think that this solution to a non-existing "problem" isn't working effectively and that Groundspeak should allow the thread to be reinstated here.

If that is too big a step to take how about expanding upon Lianne's "sell a granny" post and have a thread consisting of links to external local caching forums. Whenever someone posts an advert to a regional forum they post a quick link here. That way we can see that something has been posted but Groundspeak can rest easy that we are not actually advertising anything on their forum. Maybe someone from GSP could comment?

  6. Sounds horribly like a Christian (presumably) religious agenda to me. I know Agendas are frowned upon by Groundspeak.

However, if the cache owner is happy for me to replace their preferred tracts with some promoting, say, Islam or perhaps Humanism or maybe Atheism then I'm happy that they can stock the cache with their preferred agenda.

It's called freedom of speech, something I believe you hold dear over there.

  7. All the many "thanks" I received over the past couple of days makes it all worthwhile.

Would that be pints or bottles??

    :):):)

Actually this time it meant people simply coming up to me to say thanks. Mind you, I've had my share of liquid thanks too and my new tankard is definitely the dog's doodahs ;)

  8. The Rewards ;) receiving the Thanks from the UK community :) and the many close friendships that get built up. [i've spent the last four days have people come up to me to specifically say "Thank You". It's the best reward in the world :) ]

I would like to second that sentiment. All the many "thanks" I received over the past couple of days makes it all worthwhile. I don't know if we are privileged to have an unusually wonderful crowd of people here in the UK (I think we do but I'm biased!) but the reaction we've had both in the last few days and the previous few months since the "parting of the ways" makes me sure you're very special. :)

  9. Well I'm sitting outside my tent in the campsite, the sun is shining, lots of cachers setting up, bottle of cider on the go and I've got a 3G signal on my phone. So what could be finer than logging a few caches that I picked up on the way. See you all at the hog roast in a few hours.

  10. However, I received an email from a member who states, "they'll probably turn a blind eye to it if no one complains".

Sadly it has become apparent lately that you can probably guarantee that some jumped up little jobsworth will see it as their duty to report you, no matter how long the link has been there without causing any problems.

    Sigh

  11. Imagination - People are placing caches for the sake of placing a cache - but please people - find somewhere interesting with some history, or a purpose for getting cachers to visit. or find some other way of making the cache fun! An interesting hide or something to make your visitor smile.

FUN - that's what we need more of...

    Oh how I agree!!! (again :o )

I've just created a GSAK database for the journey up to the Mega this weekend and for the area of the Mega itself. I now have to go through it throwing out all the dross so I can find a few worthwhile caches to hunt for as time allows. I seem to spend almost as much time planning as caching these days.

  12. As the person who started this thread may I be allowed to suggest that it is not going anywhere useful now and perhaps it might now be appropriate to close it.

I started it to air a concern about the way a well respected UK cacher had been treated. People have managed to respond with varying points of view, not all agreeing, but thankfully managing to maintain the gratifying sense of civility that I usually encountered when I moderated this forum. For this I am grateful.

So ducky, how about wielding your magic wand over this thread and let us return to our usual inconsequential moans and whinges? :o:lol:

  13. All very interesting............

Lots of name calling and none of it helpful, whoever they are (remember Mandy said twice reported) has no chance of responding without being ripped to shreds having already been prejudged!

Take a step back and think

If they acted in the best interests of all UK Geocachers by reporting Mandy then I don't see why they stand any risk of being "ripped to shreds". They should come here with their head held high.

If on the other hand................................................!

  14. All change!

The greasemonkey script to put trackables at the top right, in a new "my inventory' box now shows caches awaiting review in the box...

Seems that GSP have now returned the inventory list to where it used to be. Turn off the script and everything will be as it was.

  15. It hardly seems fair does it?

    No Mandy, it doesn't.

Obviously the person who did this to you must be a regular reader of this forum so I'm surprised (?) that they haven't written here to explain to us the rationale behind their action.

  16. Do people suggest that a blind eye is turned to all charity efforts then? If that's the case this will turn into a free for all "sponsor me for this" etc. etc.

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did to be honest.... and NO, I didn't report the thread.

Fair enough Stuey, at least you had the decency to ask the question here.

At one time the moderators of this forum used good old common sense to ensure the situation you describe didn't arise. I think most posters to this forum realised there were limits to what was acceptable and tended to stick to them. For this I congratulate the good sense of the UK forum regulars, not the forum moderators :)

I think if you look back through the forum you'll see whether or not there was a problem that needed fixing. Maybe the topic could be discussed over a beer or several in Harrogate? :)

  17. I've just seen Mandy's post and I find it very sad that there are people out there who are determined to spoil it for others.

Mandy has put a lot of effort into this and has persuaded a lot of cachers to join in, now someone comes along and "reports her to teacher". I trust whoever it is feels they have achieved something.
