  1. Well put - Nobby Nobbs. It is time to sit back and let Deci do the best he can with his ex colleagues to maintain some continuity and no point in slagging off Groundspeak. They still provide us with an invaluable framework for our hobby/game/obsession for which I will still be happy to pay my annual contribution.
  2. I have just given my thank yous to your ex-partners in crime, so all I can say to you is good luck Dave. Geocaching is a very different game from when we previously only had one reviewer for the UK and I think we only have a slight inkling of how much work you put into the job. I hope everyone will be patient and that you will be able to cope. Good luck!
  3. I am very sorry it has come to this and won't repeat what has already been said, except to say how much I have appreciated all the effort you have put into Geocaching in the UK. Having been around longer than most I have seen the way it has developed and must have become a massive burden on you all - I hope your friend Dodgydaved can now enjoy some Geocaching again.

  5. No you are not alone. I am still not sure what this is all about but think we should let our reviewers represent our views rather than stir the pot ourselves.
  6. I too welcome anyone who "rescued" one of my caches - in fact it has happened more than once. I normallly carry a micro log sheet in a plastic bag and if I find a waterlogged log sheet or book will leave it with a clear note that it supplements the existing log. What to do with the waterlogged old log is a different matter, if there is room for both I leave it in the cache for the owner to collect when he maintains, otherwise I offer to return it to him if it is at all legible. Some cachers carry a spare cache box and log to make a complete replacement if the original is beyond repair but need to be careful if they think the original has gone or they may end up with two cache boxes close together - it has happened. Also carrying a spare means that you can place a new cache if you find a good spot when out and about, but near enough to home to be able to maintain.
  7. I've had a Colorado for a few weeks and my reactions have been similar. Now I am getting used to it I am more and more pleased with it and looking forward to the next software upgrade. But I was puzzled that you have trouble sending caches to the unit from GSAK as I have no trouble at all with this. I simply export a GPX file created by GSAK into the storage card. If this is what you are doing it is important to untick the box to include extra GSAK fields in the export.
  8. Sorry to stray OT but that struck a chord with me as I too learned to programme on a BBC Micro and ran my office on it for some time. But where was the celebration, please?
  9. You may well be right! It's my age you know - one forgets things!
  10. Yes and a trip up Snowdon on the railway - though there was the alternative of walking up and meeting at the top and I suppose on the canal trip (there have been two up here) one could have run along on the bank!
  11. So here we go again - no bad thing. In a year or two the perennial topic of "How did you start?" will refer back to that article!
  12. If you phone Garmin (Europe) at Southampton, I think you will find them very helpful. I did and the chap I spoke to was a Geocacher but I have forgotten his name now. You seem to get a better response by phone. In my case I had a Colorado replaced by them and the code issued with the replacement was defective, so a new one was generated and emailed to me.
  13. Dry stone walls are a "no no" for geocaches - otherwise this look promising, good luck. I'm only sorry I won't be near Falkirk for a while as I have unfinished business with the multi based on the Wheel. Sorry, Ruined Wall is an Orienteering term. Plenty boulders small enough to tirn over but big enough to cache under. Nick Thanks for the explanation - I did not know that!

  15. No doubt you will soon have a reply from someone in a better position to answer - if not why not email one of the approvers direct for advice - in Scotland I think that will be Deceangi. But I think your cache will be more popular if you give all the coordinates in the usual dd mm.mmm format which the majority of cachers set their GPSrs to. Any way good luck with it.
  16. Perhaps a bit late if you have already decided on the Mio but I have recently bought an HTC Touch Cruise (P3650) and it has all the bells and whistles you could imagine from GPS to phone, from FMradio to WIFI and runs WM6. It has a 400 processor so is reasonable quick and so far I have been very pleased with it. Also it is incredibly small and light for all it does. In answer to your question yes Memory Map 5 certainly runs on WM6, I am not sure about Cachemate as I have only fiddled with it, preferring HTML files for my caches.
  17. My Rockn'Roller dropped off and was lost in the field - take care not to snag it on a passing branch. Garmin Europe were unable to send me a spare as it was too new for them to have built up stocks so they replaced the whole unit in their usual prompt way. Unfortunately they gave me the wrong unlock code for my Topo maps but all is well now.
  18. Since I am already in a successful team and second to find Liverpool - gingerbreadmen was first and I think first internationally as well - I endorse that this has been good fun. The only problem at the moment is that the one in New Jersey has not yet been approved. It just goes to show how fortunate we are in the British Isles with our four approvers and the speed with which they get things done!
  19. I may be mistaken but I think that Clyde, in being his usual helpful self, may have mistaken the problem. Having loaded a gpx file from GSAK to the Colorado, if I go into the Geocaching Profile and open the Geocaches page, then hit the options soft key (left) I have the choice of toggling between "Show Names" and "Show Codes". This may be what was wanted?
  20. Seeing this topic has moved onto Ham Radio, about which I know little, I wonder if the participants are aware that there is a Groundspeak forum for GPS and Ham Radio - http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=14
  21. Just the point I was making earlier - if you want to see examples of interesting cache pages have a look at some of those by muttoneer!
  22. You are quite right, some of us in the North West did use Channel 3 - 33 some years ago to good effect. You have put years on me referring to a "rather old page"!
  23. If its a super series - will they be in the super bowl?
  24. I use one which I bought at LIDL for about £2.99 on which you can set up 4 or 5 lines of text on a letraset type of pad. I update the month and only have to write in the date and time. I believe too that the ink is waterproof.
