Does anyone know of a web site or a java applet where you can:
(1) plug in 2 sets of coordinates and have it come back with a distance between the two in miles, or feet, depending on the distance,
example of 2 sets: 38 30 45.5N 94 02 28.6W and 41 28 40.2N 93 25 20.5W -> what is the distance between these points?
and
(2) enter in a latitude/longitude and a heading and distance, and then have it come back with a new set of coordinates,
example: start at 38 48 32.8N 94 29 20.0W and head 38.5 miles to azimuth 202.5 degrees -> what are your new coodinates?
Some kind of stand-alone program would be best, but I don't know if something like that exists.

I was at the Nebraska/Kansas state line when they reset the First Guide Meridian East benchmark. Pretty cool to watch!

and yes, the datasheet says to call 24 hours in advance.

Has anyone been in contact with Deb Brown lately?
I had e-mailed her a bunch of possible destroyed and/or "found in poor condition"s back on the 8th and haven't heard anything back yet.
Just wondering if my e-mails went through or if they went into the ether-space.

I have had land owners and neighbors help me with plenty of marks. I've had a couple farmers who knew exactly what I was talking about and led me right to the mark. On one recovery, an elderly lady even brought me out a drink and sandwich!

There is no actual NGS survey marker at the summit. The benchmark is the "approximate center of the top".
So does that mean the actual center AT the top, as in being up there at the center?
or the center as seen from ground level?

I also notice that it has "Adjusted" coordinates...... would be interesting to see where those coordinates fall.

There should be some numbers and/or letters hand-stamped into the disc as well. That would be needed for identification.

It can vary quite a bit. I suppose it depends on the work load.
I've had reports logged within a few days and I've had logs that were updated up to a month later.

So what is the answer?
If a mark has been found destroyed at the surface such as wister6813's was, if the underground mark is not checked, will the NGS still mark it as "destoyed"?
Do both, the surface and underground markers, have to be destroyed to be considered "destroyed"?

hmmmm I would think it would be a DESTROYED in the GeoCaching pages.
I would probably e-mail Deb and ask for a official DESTROYED. See what she thinks.
Since the station was actually the "FINIAL IN CENTER OF ROOF". It almost seems as though the chiseled cross was an afterthought.

I use SGK on all my reports. ...and there are a couple counties on that map will change a lot after that.

For NGS Recovery Total, how do you get your count? Do you use only GEOCAC as the identifier? If so, that answers a lot of questions I have.
OK never mind... I found my answer "The NGS statistics count the number of NGS recovery reports submitted under the GEOCAC organization code, as well as reports for some known individuals who submit under the INDIV organization code."
How do I get included in the INDIV organization code?

Even on the Mark Recovery Entry form it says......
"This form can be used to submit recovery information for survey marks to the National Geodetic Survey. If the data sheet for this mark shows a recovery within the past 12 months and the status has not changed, please do not report it."
How did all those ever get by.....geez!

Oh, no, don't get me wrong! I'm in no hurry and I know about Deb being out of the office and how that stuff works (I also am a government employee).
Just weird to see the database not being updated. For a while earlier this year, it was only taking a week.
No problems..... no worries. I'm sure that the reports are piling up on someone's desk to be gone through.

ahhhhhh, but the real question is "When will the NGS database be updated?"
There are some recoveries I reported at the end of October and beginning of November that are still not updated on the NGS database.
