  1. See? It is awesome! And it will insert any waypoints you've created along the track too. I love having the distance to next and waypoint at next data fields on my map screen.

Absolutely. I have added waypoints around trail splits/switches and it will make the hiking experience so much better. Thanks for pointing this out.

    Totally worth it..

    Thanks! : )

  2. It shows your position. As long as you know which way you're going, it's not an issue, is it?

To see how track nav has changed on the new models, go to your active route screen while navigating a track. You may also want to use data fields such as distance to next and waypoint at next in conjunction with track navigation...

After years of hiking with the Legend the way it does breadcrumbs has eroded into my brain... Just used to it. Will try active route.

Just tried "Active Route". Wow. very nice....! I like it how it inserts "high point" and "low point" automatically. This is SOOOOO much better...

  4. Surely if you can't see the breadcrumb trail you know it's under the route  so I'm struggling to see why you feel it's an issue?

I too moved from a Legend H to the Etrex 20 and wouldn't go back :)

I just got used to see my track, and when I zoom out I could see what part of the trail I had hiked. It's just a matter of being used to this for years. And personally think breadcrumbs should always be visible... It's more intuitive.

  5. Hi, I purchased the eTrex 30 Topo bundle. The eTrex 30 is very similar to my Legend, but one thing that is much different is how it shows the current track that I hiked. It overlays the current route (selected with "Where To?") on top of the track breadcrumbs making it impossible to see where I have hiked. On my Legend it overlays the track breadcrumbs on top of the track that is being navigated, allowing you to see to what you have hiked so far if you zoom out and display the entire track. Is there a way to change this?

Make sure under Setup > Tracks > TrackLog is set to "Record, Show on Map"

FYI.... Check out GPS File Depot it has more detailed free topo maps.

Thanks for the response! I did check that option. What happens is that the current track being navigated shows up purple and overlays on the "breadcrumb track" that I gave a yellow color". On a screen refresh you can see it appear for a moment but it is overlaid by the purple track.

Change the color of the tracks? I just got my etrex 20 but had read about how to do that, but didnt need to so far in my case..

    I read it best here:

That's a good link -- done that as well. Seems that the eTrex 20/30 always overlays the current navigated track over the breadcrumbs. Seems something I'll have to live with.

  8. I have just purchased an eTrex 30 and it's a very similar experience from the eTrex Legend HCx that it replaces.

However one thing is quite different is that the power button is very easy to push. On the Legend I have to hold it for a moment so it will not turn itself on by accident.

    I posted a short video here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14691938/eTrex30Power.wmv

    Defective?

  9. Hey all,

I think I've settled on a 62s as an upgrade. Questions. What size SD card is sufficient, and where does one go for free maps to upload? Is there anything I need to do to upload the maps prior to doing so? As you can tell, this will be a pretty significant upgrade for me.

    Turtle Man

Memory card really depends on how many maps you want to keep on it. I think a 16GB will do the trick for a while with room to spare. These are now $12.99 at Newegg.com (get a class 10). Click here(I just purchased this one).

Get free maps from gpsfiledepot (click here)

"brand new" ==> Purchased but never used -- new in box. It seems that these unit sell for $300+ on eBay especially when it's new in box.

Amazing... I got my 60CSx brand new years ago with Garmin TOPO USA bundled for under $200.

That said...get a Montana 600... LOVE mine. MUCH better than the 60CSx and I really loved that unit. And, I'll love it again if I ever have to fall back on it as a backup unit since I'm never selling it. :anibad:

I was somewhat stunned by the prices I see as well... It seems folks really pay premium for a as new unit.

And thanks for the Montana recommendation <_< I already have a hard time making up my mind :P

  11. I'd go for the 62S.....if you can afford it, the 60CSx makes a great back-up.

Any rationale for the 62S from your side?

I've always been a fan of the quad-helix antenna.....I have 4 different models using the quad and several without.

I find the button layout on the 62 series ( same as the 60,76)much better than the Etrex joystick, etc.

The firmware for the 62 series is more mature ( my unit works perfectly )....read this forum re Etrex firmware.

The 62 has a GREAT 3-axis pointer{ compass} ( will always point at the cache even if you're not moving)......I've read several on this forum that won't even use this feature on the Etrex 30 it performs so poorly.

IMO the Etrex wasn't made to compete with the 62 but to offer a less costly alternative...like trying to compare a BMW 700 series with the 300 series.

That's a great insight; thanks! The compass and greater precision is important to me and the most important reason I am upgrading from the Legend HCx. I got lost yesterday for a while because without compass it's so hard to find your way back to a trail. I kept on walking back and forth and then made a detour over a golf course before finding a trailhead bringing me back to the trail...

  12. I'm curious how you got a "brand new" 60CSx for a nice price as it's a discontinued model which, if one can find a store carrying it, has a hugely inflated price tag. That being said, I'd keep the 60CSx regardless and think about the 62s or the eTrex30 (or even the 20...great unit for the price.) The 60CSx is very reliable and rock-solid but newer features in today's new handhelds makes it a little dated.

"brand new" ==> Purchased but never used -- new in box. It seems that these unit sell for $300+ on eBay especially when it's new in box.

After having read a ton of reviews and watched various videos on YouTube the eTrex 30 seems to be as good as the 62S. Like someone said earlier on this thread, it's a personal preference. I have not heard anyone about the larger antenna of the 62S being a real advantage, which puzzled me a little.

  13. I just purchased a brand new 60CSx from a colleague for a nice price. I wanted to see whether I like the unit. I noticed the menu system is almost identical to the Legend HCx, which is my current GPSr. I was looking for compass support this is why I was thinking about a 60CSx since I enjoy working with the Legend. Also I had some severe accuracy issues with my Legend recently on mountain side hikes so looking for something more sensitive.

I also tried out the Dakota 20 (and returned it as I missed some Legend features I got used to) and what I did like about the more modern software is that navigating a track is a lot simpler ("Where To?" instead of TracBack and have to select a point). I hiked in heavy rain with it under dense canopy and it kept an accurate lock, compared to the Legend that drifted off course.

    Now I am torn between:

    - Keep the 60CSx -- live with the somewhat dated software -- I keep on hearing that the accuracy of this unit is very good

    - Sell the 60CSx and get of the following:

    - GPSMAP 62S

    - eTrex 30

I keep on hearing good things about the eTrex 30 -- it seems to be a mini-62S and apparently the extra satellite support helps it to keep accuracy under a dense canopy.

However if the 62S has better sensitivity AND the same features compared to eTrex 30 I may go for that model.

    Any opinion?

  14. Although I have multiple trackpoints between "Begin" and "End" of track, the "Distance to Next" is always until the end of the track.

It won't show the distance to trackpoints. Have you created a waypoint along the track?

    Thanks for the answers!

I does do that on my Legend, so that's a step back in functionality.

Let me try to add Waypoints and see if that works (a bit cumbersome though :-( )

Just created a test route. I'm starting to see how Garmin has changed how this works. It's a little cumbersome to have to place waypoints on the track, but I can see this is how you work with tracks. You follow a track and want to be warned at a junction. The Legend warned you at all track points.

Will try this out tomorrow. Maybe I don't have to return this unit after all...

I tried the track this morning on route to kids school & work. It works indeed as expected. It doesn't 'beep' at the waypoint though which is disappointing.
