  1. $170! That is way too much money.

I am unable to respond to your question Re: paperless caching because I never used it for caching.

But, if you are interested I will sell you my Garmin 200 including the original packaging and the latest U.S. map for $50. If you are interested and live in the San Francisco Bay Area you can come by my home and pick it up. If I have to mail it add $10.

    Perfect condition, original owner.

    Questions: barrikady AT gmail.com

How long will it take you to ship it to NC?

    I'm leaving early next week...

  2. I really need a paperless gps before we go on a trip next week and I still don't have enough money for a 450t or 550t. I saw the Oregon 200 refurbished for only 170 dollars and I recently bought a Venture HC for 100 dollars but I didn't realize it wasn't paperless. I know the 200 is an older unit but so is the HC. Is the 200 worth buying right now for the cheap price? Will I be happy with it for the next couple months while I am on the other end of the country? I really want to spend some time finding geocaches out where I am going and right now I don't have time to save up the money to get a really nice GPS.

    Thanks.

  3.

    I have hardly any money!!

    Can you lend me some?

Unless they've taken to depending upon goats to trim the grass in the yards of North Carolina, they might still be willing to pay a person to ... mow lawns? Bought my first 5 speed 'spider bike' with the banana seat that way one summer. Even if you cleared only $10 a lawn after the absurd price of gas (and that would be mowing cheap, even there), 25 lawns would pay the sale price for a 450 at REI or Cabelas one of these days.

    hmmm...

  4. Now that I have decided mostly on the 550 and I might go to REI to get a feel for both of them, jsut to make sure, does anyone have any good ideas for me to make money to buy it?

You will likely save yourself a bunch of $ by reconsidering the 450 again. As has been noted, the 550 camera can be handy, but it's not as good as many regular point-and-shoot cameras.

If you hit the 450 pricing at the right time, you can score one for $250 instead of the usual $350. Keep an eye on the pricing at both Cabela's and REI since both seem to offer that price once or twice a year. Until then, $325 will be about the best price you'll see.

But isn't the screen on the 550 better?+

You're getting serisouly agigtated there eh?

I don't get "agigtated"...I either go berserk, or I get distraught, enraged, exasperated, excited, frantic, frenetic, fuming, furious, incensed, infuriated, irritated, livid, provoked, raging, resentful, uncontrolled, very upset, wild, and wrathful!

And I never do anything serisouly! If you spell another word wrong, I'll have to start giving you the antonyms too!!

  7. The newer Oregons are great as handhelds, because you intuitively tilt them for the best viewing angle. I find them to be a poor choice for fixed mount use. The 62 series is ideal, and it is much easier to navigate through different screens "on the fly." If you really want a touch screen, the Dakota has better visibility than the Oregon series.

Ahhhh!...now I'm confused because mostly everybody else said that the oregon would be ok on a bike but then you had to say that the 62s would be better!

And another question...how are you supposed to know if you prefer the buttons or the touchscreen is if you've ahd the old etrex...??

  8. First question : Garmin? If yes, continue. Otherwise, I lack the experitse to answer.

Is paperless important? Assuming yes here.

Touchscreen? Yes -> Dakota, Oregon or Montana. Small, medium, large.

    Touchscreen? No -> Colorado, 62, 62s or 62st

Colorado is discontinued, but has a high resolution screen like the Oregon. The 62 series has a low resolution screen. May not be important depending on how much detail in the map you require at a glance.

Do you want to pay ~$100 more for the convenience of 100k topo maps pre-loaded? Yes -> get the "t" models.

Do you want a 3 MP camera without optical zoom? If so, get one with a camera. There will be a 62 model with camera in the future.

If I'm buying, I'd get a 450. Asking for votes in this kind of situation is quite pointless, it all comes down to personal preference. Hopefully what is above will help you make your own decision. Try to get a few minutes at the store to play with the units you're considering before deciding.

Is the 550 worth buying compared to the 450, just because it has a camera?
