  1. We will be pleased to lay a cache for Rhondda Cynon Taff. Not sure if anyone has offered to do Rhondda. Email us if you would like us to.
  2. If you have an all day event let us know and we will try our best to get down there.
  3. It was just unfortunate it was your cache. To be honest I am surprised it has not happened before. I know of a couple that we have visited near our new Welsh assembly building - and of course with people on the look out I suppose any of us cachers could be deemed suspicious looking people at times I don't think you can be blamed for anything and neither do we think it bought geocaching into disrepute. In fact it advertised our sport further and am sure it brought a wry smile to many a face.....
  4. I agree. I use Fugawi uk and that has all the ordnance survey maps for a fraction of the cost. It also allows you to input waypoints tracks and routes to a lot of gps units. Well worth the money to us so maybe worth a look for you....
  5. I got into geocaching after reading an article in 'Computeractive' magazine. I found it such an interesting idea without thought I sent off for my first Garmin then mentioned to Lynne what I had in mind for us. (laughs). Lynne looked at me as though I was becoming some kind of anorak and at first really did not like the idea. Thankfully after a couple of trips out Lynne was as keen as me and Geocaching has now become a firm weekend and holiday pursuit. After all it's a terrific way to keep fit – visit different places – and make lots of new friends within the sport. Anybody reading this and not yet a Geocacher – Be warned Geocaching is seriously addictive – and good for your health.
  6. Many from South Wales including ourselves travelled to the Burrington Bash in north Somerset and had a terrific time - now soon it will be our turn to be the hosts at what we hope will be a great all day event with an evening get together. Full details here The page has been updated this last few days and will continue to be updated on a regular basis soon..
  7. We have a basic garmin Legend but also bought a Garmin Quest and would say the quest is ideal in many ways. It is as waterproof as any garmin – will get you from your home to the start of the hunt with it's mapping and voice software – and as an in the field gps beats the yellow etrex and legend etc hands down for accuracy. We often find when the signal has been lost on the Legend – in valleys and gorges for example – we are still getting a good signal with the Quest. They are quite expensive but our little quest really was a good investment...
  8. The event is getting nearer – soon be spring with those lighter nights and warmer sunny days – and the plans are taking shape. The event is going to be publicised quite widely in South Wales in the Newspapers and with many posters that will be put out nearer the time the hope is this will be a busy event. One event we are planning is for a half hour chat on Geocaching in the Conference room followed by a short chat about the gps just after noon for members of the public that would like to know more – and then for a -Lets have a go – session when those at the chat can find a few small caches put nearby in the play area using a gps. Can you help? Would you be able to volunteer some time for this. If you can please drop us an email. The meeting/greeting room will be open from about 10am to 4pm. It will be great if individual geocachers can pledge an hour to hold fort in the room and hand out/ offer information to those needing it. After all it will Be nice for Lynne and I to have a break. Can you help? If so please email us and let us know. Posters will be available in late March and we can email you one to print on your printer. Would you like to have one put up in your local Spar/post office/corner shop. If you can help by putting a poster advertising the event please email us and let us know. Keep an eye on this forum page as more will be coming up soon. Don't forget this event can only be great with your help. Together we will make this one to remember....
  9. Just bringing this up to ask those that have already booked but not registered they have on the geocaching web page to click here and do so. Looking forward to seeing you all in May.
  10. After yesterdays hugely successful 'Cardiff Mid-winter social' event and with all thoughts now turned to spring and May 5th I popped into the Dare Valley today to chat with staff and arrange the conference room we will be using for the day to greet geocachers - and those interested in finding out what it is all about. It was not hard after yesterday to picture how it will be buzzing on May 5th. My first contact at the park did say there had been a couple more bookings today. It seems the main building area has been having a facelift through the winter – not that it looked bad anyway but of course things should sparkle here for May. Don't forget those that have yet to book to do so early to ensure your pitch or room in the hotel..... It's now time to prepare for a super event..... Click here for full information.
  11. It's live and we are raring to go on May 5th for the 2nd South Wales event. Lots of fun and plenty to do with fantastic scenery and dare we say it - company too. The chosen location is a treat for campers too. To read all about it - and to register your interest - this is the place to visit
  12. Pleased to say the event is now live on Geocaching.com. We are now counting down the days to Spring and event time. With luck the sun will shine - warm days will be here and we will all have a super time....
  13. We print ourselves with a lazer printer - we even have a small picture of us on the card. Our cards are printed on ordinary paper then laminated - that way they will not get ruined in damp or wet caches.
  14. Only two weeks to go to the Cardiff mid-winter social meeting and we have to date in excess of 32 cachers that have said they will attend. Many new cachers have started since the last event and although many will be emailed with a personal invite if we have missed you we would love you to come. We and other cachers always welcome new cachers to our meetings that enable us all to put faces to names. If you visit our link at the start of this topic you will be able to register your intention to attend so we can can keep the meeting place informed of numbers expected. The venue also cooks super meals so as it is on a Sunday is a good excuse to eat out. Since Write & Mane kicked off the South Wales events a year ago many cachers have become firm friends and we all look forward to these meetings when we can get to meet each other again – have fun – and socialise.. Once again the Welsh flag will be flying – courtesy of Write and Mane and we have been informed there will be a couple of things to amuse us all. There will also be travel bug and coin swaps so if anyone is traveling to distant shores soon here is your chance to help one of these items on the way. Caches are also being released for the event – so be sure to check the listings on the Sunday morning. We are looking very much forward to January 28th and to meeting new friends and old..
  15. Server seems ok now at last. Nice to see there will be a good few there. We are sure to have a great time. Looking forward to trying the food too..
  16. The date has been set for a get together in Cardiff on Sunday, 28 January. Full details can be found here! The time and day has been set to allow time for some caching before the event. There will be T/B swops and ideas – volunteers sought and a discussion will take place re the Mayday bank holiday event at Dare Valley Country park.
  17. The great Redmondo mentioned ‘house/tent guests’ in an email a few days ago. We will be mentioning more of this after the event has been listed and will then publish who has already booked and how many places are left. As said previously we are sure everyone will be accommodated at the days end. Looking forward to the event already…
  18. Good one The west Viewers. There are plenty of spaces at the moment. Booking early ensures you have a pitch and are not disappointed. We are pretty sure most will not be disappointed as there are with the caravan.trailer tent/mobile home site something like 35 pitches in all...With the hotel also...
  19. I am sure us cachers here in South Wales can think of something for next years event on May 5th. Thinking caps on boys - something seriously hard.
  20. To clarify what is available at the park and what it can accommodate . There is a 15 room hotel although Mollyjak, Write and Mane and ourselves have already pre-booked there so rooms are going down. If you require bed and breakfast we would recommend you book now. The tent site has 10 pitches so probably that is where the ten comes into play. Our advice again is to book early if you want to be sure of your pitch and to enjoy this years prices. There are 25 touring caravan pitches. It was mentioned that should the tent site be full then tents would be allowed on the caravan park but you would have to pay the price relevant for that part of the site. The cost of a caravan/motor caravan/trailer tent on the caravan park is £10.50 including all occupants. Tents with use of electricity including two occupants is £5 per night - £2 per extra occupant children under 5 free. The hotel on a Bed and breakfast basis is £35 single. £45 double rising by amount of occupants. The event will be held at Dare Valley and unfortunately the venue cannot be changed - some have pre booked and the park is larger than this years venue. We are sure at the end of the day everything accommodation wise will turn out ok. Our advice though is to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment You will need to pay a small deposit on booking.
  21. I will pop into the site and have a word next week. It was mentioned that tents would be allowed into the caravan part too. I will inquire where else in the area tents can pitch although this site is larger than the last venue. Maybe one of the campers can let me know how many tents and caravans were at Parc Cwm darren. What I need to know is positive numbers that are going to attend the event. Can all those that have already booked a space on the site - caravan or tent - and all those that are definately going to attend send me an email to let me know if you will be booking a tent or van. I will then be able to have a word with the managers and come to some arrangement.
  22. Fully agree with all the positive comments. A big thank you chaps from us for always dealing with ournew placements with such speed....
  23. W & M have offered their support and will be at the event and we are sure Liz and Gordon will do their bit and order the sun to come out right on cue. You know they even pulled that stunt off last weekend at the Barry Island event where we had a summers day for caching. Thanks to the many cachers that offered their support and help for the May event while at last weekends event too. We could not do this all on our own so many thanks to everyone that will be doing their bit to make this a great weekend next Spring. We are looking to having our first pre May meeting in January to discuss the forthcoming May event - hopefully at a nice inn where we can eat and have a few jars. Probably on a Sunday. More to come soon on that one..
  24. It seems the hotel rooms at the Park have been going like hotcakes - there are now only 9 left so anyone wanting bed and breakfast should be aware of this. Yes a long while to the event but a very popular location. Us South Wales cachers will be planning a super weekend - the only thing we can’t plan for is the weather…
  25. There’s no doubt poles come in handy for poking around in the scrub for caches. Derry’s has come in handy many times. There is a definite platic thud when the tip hit’s a lunch box. Now come on I am talking about a cache. The most notable was pulling a cache out of gorse - so saving a bit of pain. Lynne does not use one but Derry swears by one with all the hills around here…
