  2. I once left some bottles of beer in the freezer at a friend's party and forgot them until the next day. The freezer was eventually found to contain some interestingly shaped and tasting ice lollies and some broken glass. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  3. quote:Originally posted by Huga: It's the fact that people call my actions ridiculous and totally stupid. If you were going to quit just because of the no food rule, then yes it would be ridiculous and stupid of you IMHO, but it looks like you actually have other potentially more valid reasons too in which case I apologise for the implication. quote:I'm just fed up of the constant bickering that this game and these forums have turned into. Well the forums and the game are not the same thing. You could happily spend years geocaching and not go near the forums at all. I don't know how long you have been a forum member, but they haven't changed much since I started reading them (November 2001). In fact compared to some of the threads that were around at that time, this is incredibly civilised. quote:I am probably (read what you like for that word) to blame as much as anyone else. Well you are responsible for some of what the forums are, but I would describe your contribution as positive which is why you'll be a loss to the community if you do bugger off. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  4. quote:Originally posted by Huga: So be it. I'm off. Toodle-oo. Ta ta. Adiós. Farewell. This is ridiculous. To chuck the sport in just because of one small rule which has always been there and has virtually zero impact on the nature of geocaching is totally stupid. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  5. quote:Originally posted by el10t:You get the same problem even with IE6. (edited - actually its a slightly different problem but there is a problem there anyway with long URLs) Rich _mobilis in mobili_ Before making my post, I tried it with IE6 and it actually split the URL across two lines which is why I started the original post the way I did. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

Basically, the browser stretches the HTML table sideways to fit the whole URL in on one line since it is effectively one word. My plea is for people to make use of the UBB URL code for placing URLs in their posts. This is simplicity in itself. In the post screen there is an instant UBB button with URL written on it. Just press that button and follow the prompts. You have to admit that http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?X=401622&Y=281036&zoom=3&arrow=Y looks better than http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?X=401622 &Y=281036&zoom=3&arrow=Y The text can be anything you like e.g. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?X=401622&Y=281036&zoom=3&arrow=Y. The problem is that, as soon as someone replies to the message, this happens and you're back to square one! That's a bug in the forum code. I don't think it invalidates the idea of using the UBB URL for the original post and if you wanted to be extra nice, you could delete the actual URLs from the quoted text. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

Does that mean there will be lots of nice enhancments to the Tripoint site? I've been unemployed intermittently since last September so the level of activity on the trigpoint site is already about as high as it's going to get especially as I'll probably soon be employed again. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  9. Here's the common sense thing: Eat food in caches if you like, otherwise remove it and throw it away (in an approved manner, not just dump it in the countryside!). Just do not put new food in caches. Whatever you may think about the rules, it is currently against them. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  12. I can see their point. Our own guidelines say "no foodstuffs, drugs alcohol or tobacco products" and it is plain that some of our own people ignore that guideline. They can therefore have no confidence that we will obey any rules put in place by themselves. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching [This message was edited by jeremyp on March 10, 2003 at 03:03 AM.]
  13. No actually. I did go through a phase of caching for four or five caches most weekends, but now I'm happy to go out once or twice a month. As I'm currently unemployed with loads of free time that represents a massive drop off in activity. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  14. quote:Originally posted by Chris n Maria:It can be quite infuriating to stand in a forest with the GPS jumping 30 meters at a time whilst you are standing still, it is lashing down, you have searched for 45minutes so you decrypt the clue only to be greated with "this is too easy for a clue". Arrrggghhhh I would post a not-found note giving reasons in this situation. Most likely the cacher would get the message and be all apologetic and fix the problem. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  15. That name is familiar. I think it might be a catch all name for a large family and not every team member does every cache. If I could be bothered I'd do a search of the forums to find the thread where their name came up. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  16. Not under any circumstances would I eat anything I find in a cache. Please don't put foodstuffs in caches. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  18. Well, London is a special case. Firstly, your GPSr won't work all that well in some parts of it due to the tall buildings. Secondly, it's easy to know where you are within a few feet because the streets are good reference points. I did the Sherlock series mostly from an Autoroute print out with the cache locations accurately marked. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  19. quote:Originally posted by Christianna:Sorry if i've offended anyone by planting my own cache before i found 20!! But i don't leave food in caches - does that redeem me a bit!?! Personally I think all rules about when you are "experienced" enough to place caches and ratios of found to planted are silly. What matters is the quality of the caches. Even then different people have different ideas about what represents a good quality cache. The 20 to 1 thing is only a guideline although I would argue most people have a good idea of what makes a good cache after doing only a few. In fact, if you read and follow all the guidelines and FAQs on geocaching.com you could probably make a fair stab straight away. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  21. quote:Originally posted by BachgenB:When looking into this some time ago on a US site I remember reading that WAAS is not always receivable (geostationary satellite?) Well a geostationary satellite is always in the same place in the sky. So if it is in line of site from a particular location, it will always be in line of site from that location. EGNOS is a European system and is designed to be visible throughout Europe quote:, can make readings less accurate (depends how far you are from a reference receiver) Part of the point is to let you know when external conditions make your normal signal less accurate. Knowing that you don't know where you are is useful in some circumstances. quote: - and means you have to have your receiver running full time to get all the data - unlike power saver mode where it goes on as little as possible. Time to buy some new rechargeables. I don't think this 1 April thing is anything to get majorly excited about. They are only changing the signal format slightly. It's still a test system which means unreliable (sometimes deliberately so). Some people have claimed that they can already get the signal so the format change is also not a big deal. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  23. It's not the browser. It works for me with Netscape, IE 6 and Apple Safari. I suspect you may have some sort of IE security setting which is preventing it from working. Another issue I have come up against with IE 6 is when the cache gets full, it becomes impossible to download stuff. If you find the "delete temporary internet files" option and execute it (part of IE 6 preferences I think), that might help. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  25. Now it's happened too many times. Does anybody else get these symptoms: You write a reply and hit the "post now" button. The browser seems to go to sleep but eventually comes back saying that the server has gone to sleep. You go back to the topic page and - sure enough - your reply is not there. You hit refresh to make sure you're not looking at a cached version of the page. You post the reply again and go back to the topic page and, hey presto, two copies of your reply. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
