  1. I don't know that it would actually encourage people to log DNFs, but I like the idea.
  2. You will see less new caches during really hot or cold weather, but personally I like winter caching quite a bit. It is just a bit harder to hide one then. There are usually a bunch of new caches after the holidays because all those people with GPS Christmas gifts can't wait to try them out and a number come across caching and then go find and hide a bunch.
  3. Remind me never to go fishing with you. All those attempts at helping me tie on the fly (sorry, I don't spin fish) and all that yacking about it would annoy me to no end and would scare the fish. And I can remove and clean my own fish, thanks.
  4. When I saw signal at Midwest Geobash there was no clear indication of gender. That is likely a good thing.
  5. Western Washington is definitely a geotopia. Many great caching options there!
  6. Years back some sexual materials were found by school children in a cache in Omaha and it made the news. That got the Omaha parks a bit worried. Our local cachers were able to calm things down, and fortunately the news contacted us and reported that the items were likely left by an accidental finder. But regardless, it caused some problems for awhile. So yeah, definitely CITO if you come across that. Personally if that was left in one of my caches I would likely shut it down or move it in case some kid was using it to hide thier stash. My concern would be that they would just come back and leave more.
  7. I wouldn't say it is male "by default." But I do think that because there are more men in the game than women and because of general assumptions people make, there tends to be an assumption that the man on a team is the one who is really into it etc. Also, there can be the assumption that any given cacher is male. Way back, someone on these forums, who I will allow to remain nameless unless he wants to speak up, thought I was a male named Carl Eenp! To be fair, I had a gender neutral, or perhaps even masculine appearing avatar at that time. I also review under the name Electric Mouse and on many occassions have recieved email beginning with "Mr. Mouse."
  8. The nail polish thing is a myth. Chiggers do not enter your body and stay there. Intead, they attach and use enzymes to liquify your tissue in order to digest body fluids. Then they go their merry way. The itchy bunp is the allergic reaction to the enzymes that form a hardend area that remains after the chigger leaves. You can read a good description of it all and learn about the various chigger myths here. The best treatment is antihistamines and/or local anesthetics. I use a bendryl stick. Not a whole lot really helps much though. You just have to wait it out and it can take some time to fully heal. Also, don't scratch! It makes it much worse! Edit: looks like some other folks also gave some similar links
  9. From various discussions, my understanding is that caches on military bases generally are there with permission from the base. So I guess I don't see what the problem is. This isn't a circumstance of geocaches leading to secret unknown areas or such. I suppose that in many instances, the location of a cache on a base in a place like Iraq limits who can find it, but that is an exception to the rules that I think is quite warranted given the circumstances.
  10. You are looking at a person, not the whole service there. Most people use twitter for multiple purposes, so one person might add links, give cache notes, update general personal information, respond to others etc. That particular user appears pretty normal to me. Anyway, I doubt there are many on there only using it only to update cache info, although there could be, and then if that was your interest, you could seek out and choose to follow only those people. You will only see notes from those who you follow. It also isn't for everyone. Plenty of people have no interest in twitter, and that is fine. Maybe even good, considering how overloaded its servers seem to get lately!
  11. I've become a bit addicted to twitter. The amount of various applications for it is rather impressive.
  12. You can become a victim of content theft without running a full feed, although scraping happens more often with full ones. When/if (probably when unfortunately) that happens, drop me an email and I'll send you some sample letters and DMCA take down notices for you to send and some misc. resources. It isn't hard to get a site's host and ads pulled out from under them when they take your content and present it as their own for profit. I've done it multiple times now. It is a bit time consuming though. You might also find what are called "splogs" scraping parts of your content and putting it up on a commercial site. You can also send the same notices with those, but personally I let many of them go because they tend to never rank high in search engines or actually make any money. Most are run by kids who fell for some "get rich on the internet" sales book. It is the full article theft that I go after--something that unfortunately is hard to avoid these days if you are in the business of internet content provision.
  13. I run a full feed through feedburner and an email subscription service with full content with no problems and at no cost. That may be a function of using Wordpress to publish though, because each feature is run through the same feed as a full blog post. Another similar service for setting up easy email subscriptions is feedblitz if you want to see what they offer. I haven't personally used them. Regardless, running a partial feed is often fine. Folks will have to click through to the site to read the whole thing though, but it also helps prevent full content theft. One more potential option: Does Press Publisher use plugins? If so, there might be one for creating email subscriptions.
  14. I guess I'm missing the big deal in this. It all seems minor and generally inconsequential to me, especially when those "rules" are are really more like suggestions and haven't changed in any significant way.
  15. If you run your feed through feedburner, you can use that to set up easy email subscriptions. It isn't too hard to set up and is free. Just head over to feedburner.com to take a look. It will also allow you to get some nifty feed use stats. The one downside to feedburner though is that you lack some access to black content scrapers from the feed. But with a non-commerical publication, you might not care about that much anyway.
  16. My first, located with permission at a prairie owned by the Nebraska Audubon Society, is still my one of my favorites. It also is still active: Spring Creek Nature Cache
  17. I think it is a pretty poor idea for a cache and personally I would ignore it, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be or shouldn't be listed. If someone want to go sticking their hand in an outhouse, more power to them. I'll pass on ever shaking that hand though!
  18. I log a DNF if I began to look for a cache at all. I rarely look long, especially for micros that might take a while (e.g. a bison tube in a pine tree). I lack patience for those and often would rather just leave and move on to something else. So those get maybe 5 minutes from me and that's it. I'll look much longer for a full size cache that I had to hike to. But I have likely given up on some of those quicker than many too.
  19. I don't have much of a system other than figuring that if it is in large park or forest preserve that I will probably like it, and if it is in a parking lot, I likely will not want to make any special trips for it. Our local group also has a cache of the month award, and reading about nominated caches has given me some ideas for ones that should be high on my want to find list.
  20. Unfortunately, the price of gas is going to keep me from traveling to an event I had planned to go to. That, and the fact that my car is about to die (but will be replaced with something much more fuel efficient).
  21. Hi I have "signed up" twice there and am still waiting for some code or someone tto approve that I can go on Nebraka cache. I just think it would be fun to meet some more people doing this and ask questions. Maybe someone can help with this membership sign up snafuuuuuuu.. Thank you Toothfaker. I got an email notification that you were added as a new memeber, so you should be able to access it. Go directly to the yahoo group page and see if you are able to sign in.
  22. Take a look at the Nebraskache yahoo group. There area good number of Lincoln cachers there.
  23. I thought that was a pretty nice video. I also didn't see much interviewing? It was more of a narrative? Plus no real repetition on your concerns in that story. I know of a site with the phrase you mention, but it wasn't overly present there? Am I missing something? I thought it was a good enough piece. ?????
