  2. quote:Originally posted by Moun10Bike: As for being certain that one has found the location that it was originally hidden in, I think back to another incident mentioned in these forums. Someone had been sure that they had found the right spot for a cache, but no container. They assumed the cache had been stolen, so they left a new ziplock back with their trade item in it in that spot. They were unaware that the cache was just a few feet away, hidden right where the owner had placed it to begin with. That's a good point. I guess there's really no way of being 'certain', unless you hid (or saw) the container there yourself. quote:The smiley face here provides positive information; i.e. "the cache is here and OK." This information directly conflicts with the actual state of the cache, and thus should not be used. It is actually actively misleading others Another good point. I hadn't thought of that. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z: I think what makes me think this should be a not-found is that you weren't able to sign the logbook. This sounds like a good rule of thumb. If I run into any similar situations myself, that's what I'll use as my criteria of 'found' vs. 'not found'. (Luckily, I haven't encountered any plundered or missing caches so far. Hopefully...knock on wood...I never will.)

Mostly you'll see them in gas stations and such. I've seen them in a few grocery stores, too. But not as often. They're one of the 'little guys' in the business, which is one of the reasons I like them. More precisely, they strike me as 'A little guy with spunk...and a touch of attitude.' (Reminds me a bit of myself...other than the 'guy' thing, that is.) People donate photos as label designs, and you'll see dozens of different labels at any given time. They don't tend to go for traditionally appealing photos, though...they seem to like the quirky, the catchy, and the bizarre. I like the quote they print on their bottles: “Ya gotta make a living somehow; we chose the beverage world. Good old soda with a twist. No hidden meanings, no billion dollar ad campaigns. At Jones, we want you to buy a lot of soda and recycle the bottles. The labels are kinda like our minds -- always changing. Run with the little guy...create some change.” There’s also a fortune under each cap, with tiny print around the perimeter that says, “We swiped these quotes from actual fortune cookies.” As for the pop itself, Jeremy's right. Mostly sickly sweet stuff. Zany flavors (like Blue Bubble Gum) and bright colors. I prefer Mountian Dew or Dr. Pepper, as far as taste goes...but I like the concept of their company, and the fact that they give unknown artist and photographers a chance at a little speck of 'fame'. _______________ By the way, thanks to everyone who's voted for my photo. (Except, of course, for those who voted it lower than the average already was. )

  7. Yes, actually he did edit the post. If you do that, do you have to reselect the option to place the bug? (And if so, will it still recognize it as being in your inventory?)

  11. I'm trying to figure out why my Eensy Weensy Spider isn't showing up on the tracking page of of the cache that it was recently placed in. It looks like the cacher did everything right, as far as logging is concerned. The TB page shows it as having been placed in the cache, and the link to the cache is there...but the top of the TB page still shows it in the hands of the cacher, and the cache page shows no travel bug link or icon. Does anybody know why it's not tracking to the cache, and what I need to do to fix it?

  13. quote:Originally posted by Markj: Should this be a Found or Not Found?? I'd say that's a "Found". You said yourself that you found part of the cache container. And if you are certain you found the location that it was originally hidden in, I'd say it was a legitimate find. As for later cachers who happen upon the cache page before the owner can disable it, but who choose not to read so they don't spoil their own hunt, I'd say that's similar luck of the draw as the cacher who happens to follow the plunderer, and gets disappointed to learn the cache is missing.

  18. I had one cache that I couldn't find, and I logged it as such. Twice more I went back to look for it, but didn't get to the cache location until dark. I didn't log the subsequent no-finds, but mentioned them once I actually DID find and log the cache successfully. I've heard people say that they go back and delete their not-founds once they've successfully found a cache, but for me, I prefer to let the record stand. I agree with MBH and martin, and don't consider it a shame to have a not-found on record.
  19. It looks like 3 days is a good magic number for waiting for responses. I got a nice note from the above-mentioned geocacher, apologizing for the mistake, and mentioning that it was his first travel bug experience. I checked the cache in question, and he has made the requested change. As luck would have it, though, there still seems to be a problem. On the bug page, the last entry shows it as having been placed in the cache; but at the top it still shows "in the hands of"...and there's no travel bug link on the cache page, even though the TB entry log links to it. Any idea why it's not showing up, and how I get it fixed?

  21. Ironically, the very next person to handle my EWS travel bug took it right PAST the hoped for destination, and dropped it in another cache several hundred miles away. That in itself is ok, since going to various states is kind of cool, and it's not any further from the goal than before...just on the opposite side of it, two states away from the last drop off. But, the part that bugs me is that, in his log of the new cache, the cacher included the 'secret logging number' of my bug, after I'd gone to the effort to erase it from any pictures I'd posted. I immediately left a note to the person, thanking him for giving EWS a lift, and asking if he could please modify his cache log to include the TBxxxx tracking number rather than the tag number. It's now going on three days, and the log hasn't been updated, nor have I gotten a response to my e-mail. To give the person the benefit of the doubt (perhaps they don't check their e-mail very often), I thought I'd watch to see when he logs another geocache find, and see if he updates his previous log then. Other than being a little irked that people don't read/follow the posted instructions for travel bugs, I'm not too worried, since I've never heard of any actual cases of people posting false logs on travel bugs whose numbers get blazened into plain view in logs or pictures. But I'd still prefer not to have the number on public display if I have any say. (If the person doesn't log a find by the end of the weekend, do you think I should send him another e-mail; or e-mail the cache owners, and ask for their support; or just let it go and not worry about it?)

  23. Cute touch to post your notes as letters 'from' the travel bug himself.

  25. I agree. Make your own tag (Markwell's make a great template), and include the number there. It might be fun to make a little story line for the travel bug, to incorporate his "brother" having been washed away in the flood.
