  1. Help urgently needed, my Dakota 20 has just died - blank screen nothing at all.

I had loaded some Topo maps on and some caches (about 200) I turned it off and it will not turn on with new batteries or conecting to the computer. I have tried three sets of batteries and two differant computor leads. any help very grateful. Thanks

  2. Download either Blackstar Navigator or Cacheberry, download the GPX file of the cache you want and load it into the app you choose, either one will then have an option to display the cache in Google Maps app on your BB.

I personally have both of those apps on my 8330 since both do things better than the other.

Thanks for your reply, I have downloaded both but still to no avail.

    Thanks anyway.

  3. I have a Dakota 20 and love it. Saying that I have a problem when it comes to mystery caches I collect all the clues convert them to the coodinates and install them into the Dakota via mark waypoint. I then can not find the cache? using a mates GPS we set the same coodinates and it drops us on the cache??? I think my problem is in the setup - position format - I have tried a few differant settings but can only get 'close' (100 yards) not on top of the cache? it often puts the cache in a private garden, the middle of a lake etc.

The nearest I can get is using - (setup) - (position format) - (hddd*mm'.mmm') - (map datum) - (WGS 84) - (maps spheroid WGS 84) is this were i am wrong!!!

I hope that makes some sense to someone that can help me to gain mystery caches

    Thanks Moorhouse Gang

  4. Unfortunatly they are being sent to the GPX file on the card?

When I am on Geocache website and send a cache to GPS it gives me two options (the GPS or F drive which is the memory card in my unit) once I choose to send to the F drive I can then see it in the memory card via looking through the computer. once disconected from the computer I can not find the card at all.

Just because they are getting sent to the card does not mean that the card has the correct path created. Make sure that the garmin/gpx folders exist on the card. You didn't say if they were created, so I just want to make sure they are. Otherwise, just send them to the units memory.

    Hi

They are going to the card in a file marked GPX folder they are the same size and the same discription as the ones I send to the GPS. you say the card may not have the correct path? what is this about? sounds like it may be that as i can not see the card at all on the GPS.

I am sending them to the card due to having TOPO maps on and a large number of Geocache when I go away for two weeks holiday. I dont get the option of sending the TOPO's to the card.

    Thanks for your help

Why the hell does Garmin not give a full instruction book on how to use the product that you have spent so much money on? I don't think they sell many if a new customers read this website first!!!!

  6. I have a Dakota 20 with a 1 gig Memory card, I have sent Geocaches and routes to it via the computer successful to the card. but once disconnected from the computer I can not find them on the map in Geocaches or in routes its like I can not see the memory card.

The unit works perfectly if I use it without the memory card.

    Any help gratefully received

  7. Hi all,

Does anyone know how i can get some free maps (for the UK) to donwload to my Garmin Dakota 20 - the maps in the unit are very basic, and wanted to get something better.

Any help on where to look would be great. :o

    Many Thanks

    Mark

    Hi Mark

I have had my Dakota 20 for some 3 months not managed to download any maps other than topo maps, I have all the Memory maps of Britain but can only send route to the unit, and thats a task!!!

You can down load Garmin maps but they are very expensive.

    Have fun Moorhouse gang

From Garmins's CO/OR FAQ but I'm assuming it works for the DK:

Question: How do I transfer a route from Memory Map to my Oregon / Colorado?

    Answer:

Some third party applications such as Memory Map are unable to communicate with the Oregon or Colorado directly as these devices are mass storage devices. In most mapping applications it is possible to create a route on the computer, save it as a GPX file then store this on the internal memory of the GPS. If you are using Memory Map the steps for this are:

    1. Create a route using the Route tool

    2. Click Overlay and a select Export Visible from the list

    3. Select a location on your computer to save the file to

    4. Name the file and select GPS exchange file (gpx) next to Save as type

    5. The file will now be saved to your computer. Locate this file and copy it (right click then Copy)

To transfer a GPX file to the GPS device connect it to the computer and ensure the device goes into mass storage mode. Windows should prompt you to open a folder to view files (if it doesn't then go to the Start Menu > My Computer and double click the Oregon / Colorado drive). From this Window

    1. Open the Garmin folder

    2. Open the GPX folder

    3. Paste the file into this folder (right click then paste)

The route will then display in Routes when you next turn on your GPS device.

  9. I have purchased a Dakota 20 on the understanding that I can upload route from previously purchased Memory maps. but unfortunatly all I get is 'Error 0' I have looked for up dates on Garmins website tried to load Mapsource but it want load to my two computors

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks Moorhouse gang
