Right now Energizer lithiums. I'll be picking up a Lacrosse charger with Eneloop batteries very soon though. Makes no sense not too when the Eneloop rechargeable cost the same as the Energizer lithiums. 4 charges and the Lacrosse charger is paid for.

I know exactly how your feeling lol, its pretty overwhelming the first time.
What you need to do is find a cache that you want to after. On the cache listing you'll find a set of coordinates on the top.
The way I did it when I had my eTrex was print out that listing and right a number on the top. We'll say 001 is the number I choose. Now you'll go on the eTrex and create a new waypoint, name 001 and use the cache coordinates and then save it.
Then just set it to navigate to the waypoint and away you go!

I thought the 550 had the same screen as the 450? Maybe not

Nice! I was looking at the map and said man that looks familiar, didn't notice you were from Durham as well! I'm guessing those were the new Data Boys series? Wish I could make the events this weekend, unfortunately gotta work

I agree with simpjkee...
If we went to the location and searched and did not find the cache then that's a DNF for us.
We wouldn't log a DNF if we approached the location then, from a distance, we saw a good reason why we would not be able to search effectively (e.g. a party of muggles having a picnic there). In such a situation we'd probably just leave a note log.

Exact same feelings for me.

For the $30 a year it's well worth getting a premium membership. That way you can set up your Pocket Queries and then have GSAK automatically pull them from your email account. I have an account set up just for PQs. It's great, and helps support the infrastructure that is needed to keep this addiction going.
I have it set up the same way. Its so awesome, all you have to do is load up GSAK press 2 buttons and then have all the caches loaded and ready to be sent to the GPS. Couldn't be easier

I use the ones posted above on my 450, works great.

I love my Oregon 450.
Best is such a opinionated word anyone. Whats best for me may not be best for you.
The best thing to do is go actually handle a few different models and find out what you like the most.

This topic has been a good read as I'm shopping for a new GPS and considering the 450. I'm still a novice GC'er with only 45 finds so I can't help but ask... Besides "because it can", why would you want to load 5000 caches on the device anyway? (no sarcasm inferred) Just trying to understand the full concept.
I travel a lot to visit my girlfriend up in the mountains a lot and we take a lot of day trips. Since the area is so cache dense being able to hold a lot keeps me from having to load different caches all the time. And once they up the PQ to 1000 thats even less PQs I have to deal with!

All the Garmin models that are out work. I'm currently using a Oregon 450 and it works great with my Macbook.

The Droid is just like any other smartphone, it has mobile internet.

I don't see how people can find geocaching boring. Its so diverse, you could be hiking, kayaking, walking down town, driving around in parking lots, etc etc. I love it!
-
If you do decide to go with that eTrex I have a serial to USB cable that I can send you for a few bucks. I had one but honestly I can't remember if I ever used it with my Macbook or not. I'm pretty sure I did with GPSbabel or something but I can't remember for sure lol.

The 450 will have ... the ability to hold 5,000 geocaches.
This is up for question.
At this time, it does appear that the 450 holds 2000 and only the 550 holds 5000. This is not absolute fact and there is discussion in another thread with testing going on to determine and resolve this question.
Queries to Garmin have yielded conflicting answers and it appears that some of the WIKI pages are guessing that the 450 is the same as the 550.
The most official answer from Garmin so far appears to be 2000, but it was from a person that was obviously not familiar with geocaching and there is speculation that he could be confusing geocaches (since they get special treatment) with waypoints.
I'm also considering a 450, and currently own a 400t, and this is a deciding factor for me.
It is 5000, I tested it yesterday

Do you see it on the sidebar when you open a Finder window? I have mine set to not show me on the desktop, it shows up in Finder though.
-
It worked! If I search for Cache 0001 and Cache 5000 it finds them though so I'm pretty confident they are all on there.

No problems with the touchscreen here. The 450 is a lot easier to see in direct sunlight than the 300. I run GSAK via Parells on my Macbook, works great.
-
I just go to Upload Field Notes and do it that way. I just got a GSAK macro that will do that automatically, I haven't used it yet though.

x2 on the 450. I just got mine from here last week. Shipped very fast:

The screen is so much better, I had a Oregon 300 before. The 3 axis compass is also very nice

No reason to switch here. Totally happy with my eTrex to Oregon 300 to Oregon 450.

If you want to email me one sure.

I have the serial to USB cable if you would like it. I can ship it to you for a few bucks.

Once Groundspeak changes the PQs to hold 1000 I can easily answer this. Right now I have 1500 on it and its as fast as it is with none.

I had the same problem, it turned out the map file I put on was corrupt. Once I removed it it booted up fine.

Between my Oregon 300 and my Oregon 450 in direct sunlight I can tell a big difference.
