  1. !I like this idea! A thought for the group: If I have a postcard with Niagara Falls and a rainbow in the falls. Do I have to have a rainbow in my picture? It was cloudy for three days while I was there. (I was never there, but I wish I was.) The same question goes with a Full Moon reflection off the water of a lake or beach front, or over a mountain. Sometimes, it's that temporary phenomenon that makes the picture. Check out: http://www.jibjab.com/jokebox/jokebox/jibj...31/jokeid/47986
  2. Is it still "Turned Off"? I just saw it in the Entertainment group. Maybe 2.0 turned it back on? I've been thinking about this and still haven't come up with a solution. So many different people want to do/see so many different things. That's why we have so many different cats. I just checked on some of the smaller towns in my area and many of them don't have a web page. Some items in those towns are listed on local tourism web pages and in flyers that you pick up locally. But local tourism webs and flyers are paid for by sponsors (advertisers) so it is weighted in their favor. So many golf courses, hotels, private campgrounds, resturaunts, and other businesses are listed that you might miss that ONE item that you would use a vacation day to see. Or it wasn't included because it wasn't as "important" in their eyes. I did notice that there was a section for historic places/events on most of the sites. I was surprised that two items in two towns that I thought about for this Cat were both listed. And neither of them were historic items. I had the same idea as Jake39, as far as re-Waymarking everything. But that's not the proper solution either. And I know Jake39 wasn't serious. When it comes to tourism, everyone wants a share of the tourists money. They'll list anything that might bring in the cash. If they have nothing better, then it's " Come see the two-story outhouse - it is here!" (yes, it does exist, with a geocache next to it.)(No, it's not on the National historic places list.) These were my thoughts, but I have no solution. What you have is the best that I could think of. Edited for clarification.
  3. But I don't have a pair of 3D glasses - Darn. Toot, Toot, my horn too - All Aboard?! Train Conductor http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/details...5e-edee38ec2bda I sure wish I knew how to do that fancy stuff on my comments. I gotta get more editcated
  4. Oh Boy, Oh Boy. I know a park nearby that has ~20 wood statues and a carved wood train with several cars. Is that 21 waymarks or 1. I'm still waiting for an answer to - Does it include chainsaw carvings? I love my chainsaw, it is so distructive, errr- creative.
  5. Some do & Some don't. See this thread in -Waymark Category Discussion forum- Visits Before A Waymark Was Posted Last comment was made on Sept 8
  6. I have searched and searched.... Where is that box to check as "absent"? Could someone please creat a waymark for it? I really can't find it. Thanks.
  7. Yes, that would be nice. I always open mine to look for a message, just in case. BUT... This morning my IP went down for three hours. I know an "approved" message should have come in because when I got back on, one of my submissions had been approved. I wonder if he asked for a minor change? He has in the past.
  8. I believe we already have temporary waymarks. Three that come to mind are: • Hot Air Balloon Festivals • Kissmobile Sightings • Renaissance Fairs Don't these last only a few days each year at the same location? I've wondered if I should temporarily disable my hot air balloon waymark for 50 weeks out of the year.
  9. See this most recent posting: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=136809 It also has references pointing back to earlier posts. Personally - I do. But it's up to personal preference.
  10. Dams are included in Man-made Waterfalls in the Nature Section. Short Discription: Outdoor man-made waterfalls, with a minimum vertical fall of 5 feet and a continuous flow of water for most of the year. This includes waterfalls created by dams, aqueducts, hydro-electric power stations, garden waterfalls, sculptures, etc.
  11. Repurposed schools sounds interesting. But would Silverquill's "vacant and boarded up, but on the National Register of Historic Places." be eligible? It hasn't been repurposed - yet. I've seen one-room schools as a quilt shop (after it closed as a church), tourist info centers, nature centers, private home, museum, antique shop, storage shed, part of a historic village, and a chicken hutch. Hmm, in our town is a school that closed, was a Red Cross center for 15 years, and was just turned back into a school again. Is this a re-repurposed school? I love Waymarking. I also say "Go!"
  12. Sorry, but I see no value in that picture you posted as being able to identify the type of bridge this is. Take another picture from underneath. Edit: I realize it's a covered bridge photo. I'm not sure which bridge you mean. The photo was for the covered bridge, but the old bridge was there also. If you mean that the photo was poor for a "Truss Bridge" waymark, I have to agree. It was not photographed for that purpose. For a Truss Bridge waymark, I will take a new photo of the "Truss" bridge, to show it better. Then the covered bridge will have "no value in that picture..." Although I may also include this photo to show the unique quality of this particular "Double" bridge.
  13. Visit this Covered Bridge waymark: http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/details...0f-71cbcc663e7e I'm web page illiterate, so you'll have to take it from here.
  14. I'll be happy to join as an officer. MotherGoose and I have been birders for years.
  15. Now that I know what a truss bridge looks like. What do I do with the old truss bridge that got to weak for cars. They build a pedestrian covered bridge inside of the truss frame.
  16. I believe that it was SKATE PARKS (GC9680). Nothing was said about skateboards, rollerskates, or in line skates on the page. A link did put you at www.skateboardparks.com I'm not an enthusiast and my grandkids aren't either. I'll pass on the Grab, but I'll help by creating a couple waymarks.
  17. part 1 - Would it also include something like the home or hometown of a famous Rocket Engineer, or an astronaut? Part 2 - Would a $50.00 digital camera get a good enough picture of the Pleides meteor shower? Many of these streaks seem to be quite dim to the eye. Take 100 shots and hope one has a bright streak? Brrr, I'd freeze. Of course there's always the Perseid Shower in August. But it's over. Now I wait for a year. I, too, believe this should be two categories. I sure like both concepts. As a child, I remember watching the Russian Sputnik travel across the sky at night.
  18. Personally, I thought it was FUNNNNY. It"s too bad that at this time there isn't a "Write a Note" Button ( Like the old Locationless Caches) for adding this type of "Funny". Then you could mention that it was in a waymarked Drive-in and give that information. No one would receive credit except those visiting the waymarked Drive-in. But everyone reading it could enjoy it and realize that it was just a "Funny". I know of a year-around Halloween-type haunted house, it's a business, that is lived in by the owner. The owner is an artist. With car parts sticking into the sides of the house, a flying saucer on the roof and several bony bodys laying around. It also has two "artistic" vehicles that the owner drives to the grocery store. Now, which waymark will it fit in? Probably none, since there are deficiencies for any of the waymarks. But it would be FUN to post-a-note for all to see.
  19. Congrats on making Master Gardener. I am aware of the work that goes into becoming one, but I'm not aware of the details. Are Master Gardeners trained "in general" or "specialized"? Can a lay person have a Master Gardener certify a xeriscape garden? (I'm just puting thoughts out there. Answers to questions are not required.) I do think that this category is worthwhile and do-able. IMO anyone wanting to include a signless waymark would have enough pride in that garden to make the detailed discription work.
  20. I don't know anything about Xeriscape Gardens, but to help clarify things, help us out. The description for the garden "Plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate are emphasized, making sure that the plants used are appropriate for the environement that they are in." It sounds to me like most gardens would naturally be this type. If they aren't, wouldn't the plants be "Exotics" from some other area and require special care? Are we trying to use a fancy name to hide the fact that it is now a "common" garden? Does the fancy name get added because a "Pro" says so? You mentioned two gardens without signs: How do you KNOW that they are what you think they are? Did someone tell you? Web site? brochure? Gardener for that location? Is there documented PROOF in an office file that can be photographed or a web page to refer to? These could be used instead of a sign for public and private gardens. I have to agree with C_T_D. A sign or other proof needs to be required. Remember that there will always be something falling into those cracks. Arboretums are a favorite waymark of mine. I know of two locations that have a large variety of trees and shrubs with labels for each plant. One is a historic home, the other is a closed down college. Neither is titled as an Arboretum, so I can't use them as waymarks. I'm afraid that this time it will be the private gardener without Professional proof who will find the crack.
  21. There are also "FAIRS" that aren't called Fairs. I've been going to the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo, Iowa since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I even won 1st prize in the nail driving contest when I was 12. It's bigger than a County Fair but smaller than a State Fair, and has all the same trappings. Check out: http://www.nationalcattlecongress.com/ Sept 14 - 17, 2006 OOPS, I now see that they have included the word "Fair" at the end of the title. See: http://www.haverealfun.com/
  22. I just read the information today. I have enough to claim a bronze. Sure wish there was a way to tell the difference between Waymark and Geocache Earthcaches. I had to scroll through the whole list just to find out that there are no new ones in Iowa, I've visited all of them. None within 100 miles of me. I guess I better get busy and create one. I live on an old river bed that was part of the Mississippi River when it was flowing full of glacial melt. Peat is harvested (open pit mined?) just down the road. No roadside pull-offs, and most is just corn and bean fields. Where do I start? Perhaps a discussion on sedimentary/organic buildup from a waterway to swamp to wetland to ... Well, ecological progression? Is a Multi allowed in Earth Caches? It would be 20 miles long I think. My brain got engaged, I better stop here and make some notes elsewhere on my computer.
  23. I am pretty sure that carniv"e"rous plants are not Edible. I haven't found any wild ones to taste. Cat tails are yummy though.
