  1. Something else I thought of... Something I already paid $10 for is now going to cost me $30 dollars yearly. For an app, $30 a year. Well no, you will be paying $30 per year for the provision of information that everyone else pays $30 per year for. The new app is free. If there was some quirk that gave Win7 app users a free ride that is now to be stopped (in a years time) then enjoy the free ride while it lasts.
  2. Hi , It might pay to post in the UK forum so you will get some qualified answers.
  3. The text from Cold Gears post: What's the problem? You've paid a miserly ten bucks for a programme that will run for another year. At any time within that year you can download a new, better programme that is free. If you want the benefits of Premium membership you should fork out the dollars to gain those benefits.
  4. What is the "this" that you want to install?
  5. Which is exactly what one of the Greasemonkey scripts loaded on my PC does ("GC little helper" I think). The script puts a email icon beside the CO's link and when you click on it it opens the profile email page (with the cache name (and code) inserted) bypassing the main profile page.
  6. No way would I pay $10US per month (more in my currency) for something I got back for free by adding a bit more software to my system.
  7. OK noting an often lack of important point sites on the other side of the world to pin our cache to on this side of the world, I have used above tool to find where e.g., their national border crosses our big highway, etc.: intersection of two liner features. Hmm, their coastline crosses our river, etc. The only problem is placing a cache upon a busy or wet linear feature... (Well as my only cache is under my bed, I have little actual experience (that's why it is under my bed... I don't want to be a Virgin Cacher for life ) And not that kind of "busy or wet linear feature" you are thinking of please.) I think this has the makings of a cool idea but I'm not sure how it could be implmented as a cache. It could be run as a version of the OVER THE POLE (North to South) but that would require a standard cache on both ends. NZ is particually blessed with antipodes, most of it being on the Iberian penisular. The nearest settlement to my home antipode is the village of Torrecilla de la Ordenbut I'm guessing not many of its 332 inhabitants are geocachers.
  8. I'm not one of the "it's all about the numbers" sorts. I like puzzles and multis. In fact, most of my favourited caches are puzzles; multis; earthcaches or regulars in beautiful, out of the way places. Two by way of example: Sculpturally Speaking; Lower Bolton I can't see your 11/15/11 cache on your profile, but looking at your other caches none of them have a particularly high hit rate. Perhaps there isn't many cachers in your neck of the woods?
  9. Apparently not, as one is greeted with a default cPanel info page when accessing the site. Dunno since when this started, but it's an issue for over an hour. Working for me when I checked at around 1000 GMT Still working for me at 1700 GMT (Incidentaly, what are the posting times on the forum? The poster's time, Seattle (Groundspeak) time or the reader's time)? I guess I'll know when I post this.
  10. Or where the hint is "there is no hint" Then why fill the hint section in??
  11. If it's not being maintained, tag with a needs archiving log and wait for a reviewer to look at it, I guess. Once it's archived you can use the location. But beware someone doesn't beat you to it. It might pay to contact the reviewer and tell them you're interested in keeping a cache at the spot first before the Needs Archiving log.
  12. there fixed. Rats - halfway through typing a correction and see I'm beaten by a FTCer (first to correct)
  13. This website provides free garmin maps in an installer file format which will load automatically into MapSource. There are programmes available (the name escapes me at the moment) that will load .IMG map files into MapSource as well. When your select the maps you want from this website, and click "Build My Map", the final email you get will have many different download options. One of which is a gmapsupp.img file. With that, you can simply copy it onto an SD card(assuming there isn't already a map on it) and be ready to go as soon as you turn the unit on. If you have the right Garmin (such as the OP). Some of us still have to load maps from software on the PC (eTrex Venture HC).

  15. No, they know how to upload their field notes to the website. They want to know if there's a way to bulk convert the field notes into logs, presumably all with the same content, hence the discussion on log length. And I note they now have started to have real sentences in their logs rather than "TFTC" so I guess they may not have got what they originally wanted from this thread but have learned something.
  16. There are geocaching apps for the Blackberry: Cachesense Geocache Navigator I don't know how good the GPS is on the 8520 Blackberry (it stinks on my 9700 Bold compared with my etrex) but it should get you in the general area. Another alternative is the WAP site (wap.geocaching.com). It's a low tech (2G?), low bandwidth mobile device website. Once you have the code via the email you could enter the code on the WAP website and get the co-ordinates. (And it's free).
  17. Mapsource is a Garmin product that displays maps you have loaded into it. What map do you have selected? The Mapsource example below has "US Road & Rec" selected
  18. To expand on this— You will find a particular cacher's hides from his/her profile page (in the "Geocaches" tab). There then follows a tedious procedure of opening each cache, bookmarking it as per AZcachemeister's suggestion, and then returning to the cacher's Placed listing for the next one. This can be aided by some Greasmonkey scripts which will place a Bookmark icon on the listing page. But the best solution is to download GSAK. GSAK is a geocaching database that does allow you to search by user name. With the latest version of GSAK you could run a query to, say, download all caches within 10 km of you home. It would then download all those caches from geocaching.com and then display them. You could then filter that by the owner's name. You can then load that result directly onto your GPS. You can also upload your result in GSAK back onto geocaching.com (if you have a empty Bookmark list waiting) and from there create a PQ. Well worth the extra $US30 in my opinion.
  19. To be completely Francis about it, many (most?) cache owners hate "TFTC" (on its own) as a log. To many it shows no respect for the work they have put into publishing the cache. In some circles it is used as a sarcastic "thanks (for bringing me to a boring cache)". This thread on Pet Peeves as a CO features TFTC predominantly. Look at some of your recent logs "TFTC" and compare them with other logs. What would you like to receive as a cache owner?
  20. You don't need no stinkin' graphical interface. Show that you're a real tough geocacher and use GC's WAP interface.

    Topo maps

You'll need to expand on that a little. Topo maps where? What software? Are you talking about the map view from Geocaching.com? Yes, you go into geocaching.com and use the new maps that they have. In the upper right hand corner there is the icon that you can click on to change the map to one of several choices. The last choice is topo maps. I can click on this and the topo never comes in. My friend can click on it and the topo comes right up. Why is that? The "My Topo" will only get you topo maps if you are Nth America, likewise the "Mapquest Aerial" for photo maps. You best bet if you going to use the Geocache maps in it's standard configuration is the "OpenCycleMap". Or, if you a Windows user, there is an option to get the Google maps back if you have the Firefox browser. PS Just noticed you are in Nth America (Arizona). How come you posting in the NZ forum? If you are in the States and looking for American caches I don't know why the "My Topo" isn't working for you.

  23. I have similar problems on one of my hides which has a Russian flavour. Anyone trying to enter Cyrillic characters ends up with ??????. Some loggers have resorted to images http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=3db2e23c-d8c6-4871-a45b-7e772bbbc6b2
  24. Can't help I'm afraid Niki. What caught my eye is with the browser resolution I'm using only the first five words of your subject line show in the NZ forum view B)
  25. Or log any finds on the correct day and ignore the Souvenir tab. "I see nothing...I see nothing..."
