  5. Great program but I find I dont' use it much since my GPSV does auto-routing and duplicates many of the features of this progbram. So off it goes. 2 CD set with jewel case and documentation. I'm asking 30.00 I'll accept paypal, checks or moneyorders. Email me at Jollybgood@aol.com if you're interested. Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg
  6. I bought all of the Mapsource CD sets a few months ago. I've decided only to use MetroGuides because I have a GPSV and find the routing features more useful than the other sets. So I'm selling the others sets. All of them are in great shape and come in the original jewel cases with any documentation which came with them. I thought I'd offer them for sale here first before putting them on Ebay. I'll accept paypal (possibly checks or money orders). Email me at jollybgood@aol.com if you're interested in any of these Roads and Recreation Ver 3.0 -- $50.00 United States TOPO (3 CDs) -- $65.00 Jolly R. 7. I can't really help with your problem. MY GPSV's batteries died while uploading firmware a while back but I was able to recover by resetting it. (I forget the button combo -- a Garmin rep explained how to do it via email). Hopefully your unit has a similar function. I went out and boght an AC power adapter at Radio Shack (cat no. 22-501) for 14 bucks. It plugs in the wall and allows you to plug in your GPS unit's cigarette adapter. That way battery power becomes a non-issue. At least you can safequard yourself against this happening again. Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg

  10. I feel better knowing it's not my unit. I would have sworn it worked before I upgraded my firmware but I can't be certain. Hopefully 2.03 will fix all the bugs. The fact that it's late in coming may be a good sign. Maybe they're taking their time and doing it right. Or... it could mean it's all screwed up. Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg

  12. I agree, it's frustrating not to have roads in your area appear on your mapsource maps. I spent quite a bit of time examining all the MapSource sets after I got my GPSV and it drove me crazy. One set would show the drainage ditch behind my office building but not the road which ran in front. Another set would show the rail road track in the area but not the lake across the road. It seemed like a conspiracy. Each map set seemed to introduce features not covered by the others while taking away features the others had. I finally came to the conclusion that its really a matter of memory. Only so much detail can be crunched into the maps -- which is why there are so many different map sets for MapSource i suppose. For example I've found MapSource shows several local streams/creeks accurately on my GPSV whereas Mapsource TOPOS doesn't even show them. I have Topos, Roads and Recreation, City Select and Metro Guide and have spent quite a bit of time comparing each as far as my local area. Each of them show something that the other maps don't. So to me, it appears choices have been made. In one set, water features have been diminished so that points of interest could be added. In another rail ways aren't deemed important but lakes and shorelines are. Overall I've found Metro Guides to be the most useful unless I'm in a large metropolitan area (like Chicago) then I prefer City Select. I would like to see Garmin come out with States. Rather than crunching the entire U.S. onto one CD which has limited detail, I'd prefer to have, say the state of Illinois with mapdata with ALL the detail from each mapset combined. Perhaps this is too much for the current generation of GPS units to handle. But I'd gladly give up POI data (Do I really need to know there's a Tire Store on the intersection near my house?) just to have all the water way and road data in the area I'm cachehunting in. 13. This feature is described on page 10 on the bottom of the sidebar in the QUICK START GUIDE. "...using the Left/Right portion of the Rocker Keypad will scroll information one full screen at a time." Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg
  14. I noticed in the GPSV documentation today that when scrolling through long lists (like waypoints, waypoint icons, points of interest, etc) you can jump to the next page by pushing the Rocker Button to the left or right. Kewl feature but the trouble is it doesn't work. On my GPSV I have to scroll all the way through such lists. The page up/down feature just isn't working. I'm wondering if anyone else has got it to work? Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg
  15. Call me a geek but this looks ultra kewl. http://www.casio.com/watches/product.cfm?section=14&product=3682&display=10&cid=4378 Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg
  16. Keyspan makes an excellent adapter. They also provide a driver you can download from their website. www.keyspan.com I do have a question for anyone else using the keyspan adapter. I noticed they phased out their old USB to Serial adapter with a 'high speed adapter' with faster transfer speeds. Does anyone know if this is simply a USB2 compatible device or if I would benefit from the high tranfer speed using VPC5 and my GPS. Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg
  17. As much as I love VPC (now that the kinks are worked out as far as GPSing) I would definitely love to see such a program for the MAC -- especially OSX. I have a GPSV and I use OSX on a Tibook550. I'd pay money for such a program. VPC works nicely for me but I have to admit it WAS expensive investing in VPC, Windows 2K, etc. Jolly R. 19. I'm posting this with Explorer running on Windows 2K running on VPC5 running on OSX while listening to MP3s running on iTunes in the background. Is life amazing or what? Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg

  21. VPC5 on OSX is an amazing combination. The most recent update (5.02) solved the speed problems I was initially having. I can now run virtually any GPS software for the PC without any problems. I use VPC5 to run Easy GPS, Mapsource, Street Atals Deluxe, TOPOUSA, etc with no problems. If you go this route make sure you buy the high speed Serial to USB adapter rather than the older slow one from keyspan. the high speed adapter uploads mapdata much faster. Two pieces of advice however if you go this route -- install Windows 2K rather than Windows 98. Windows 2K simply runs much faster. Also make sure you have at least 512 megs of ram. BTW I'm using a Tibook 550 megahertz with 768 megs of ram. Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg
  22. With the exception of City Select which came with my GPSV, I purchased ALL my mapsource CDs off of Ebay. There are several dealers who sell new (in the box/shrinkwrapped) mapsource CDs well below retail. I picked up Metro Guide (the new routable version) for 75 bucks. Roads and Recreation for 60 and Topos for 80. Just don't be shy about asking the seller questions (such as the version number for Metro Guide).
  23. > Really? I'm surprised to read this. I had an Etrex and a Vista but I got rid of both of them because I was frustrated with the frequent signal losses. I've been extremely pleased with the GPSV. Jolly R. Blackburn http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/26453_300.jpg

  25. I've had no problems with my GPSV at all. Once in a blue moon it will shut off unexpectedly but this usually happens when I'm unplugging the power supply when getting out of the car. The only real quirk I've seen (three times in as many months) has to do with autorouting. If i'm following a route and go off course I've found that if I continue moving/driving while the GPS recalcualtes the route it can cause problems. (Such as telling you to turn left when you should turn right). Stopping while the unit is recalculating and giving it time to complete the task seems to solve this problem. As I posted previously I opted not to update my firmware to 2.02 because of the rumors of problems. I am glad to hear 2.03 is soming out. Hopefully it will add a few new features to expore. Jolly R.
