  1. I did a little experiment this weekend with my pin finder. (ferrous only, etc..) I used a little magnet I had (neodymium boron I think), a similarly sized (massed) metal bolt, and a fridge magnet. As you can probably guess, the NB magnet won hads down (like about 100x more sensitive). The fridge magnet was only slightly better then the bolt. This all makes sense as the pin finders are sensitive to fluctuations in the earths magnetic field (any mag field really). So, I don't know how magnets show up to the other kind of metal detectors, but a little magnet is better then a lot of metal to the pin finders.
  2. I tried it out, it was free with my 76CS. From what I remember, It seems to be *exactly* the same program as Mapsource, just no maps. So I'd say equally easy. And I've always found MapS pretty straightforward.
  3. I rent a lot of cars (day job - also gets in the way of caching) I always have my GPS with me. In a sample size of 50 cars in the last 3 years, US, Canada, all brands including a few imports, I'd say 40 of them would read 2-3 mph/3-4 kmh higher on the speedo then I was really going. The others would be right on (within the resolution of the speedo ticks). Never seen one read low.
  4. Sony DSC-F828 8Mpx, 7x optical zoom (+2 digital), very clean optics, fast autofocus and processing. Full auto mode and all the manual overides you could hope for. With the Sony Pro MemStix, 30 frame/sec 640x480 MPGS. Also takes reg MemStix & CF / Microdrives Completely happy, awesone camera
  5. Thanks Neo ! I had it all down except the learning about copying them into the My Garmin directory. This does unfortunately limit the portability of the icons to other users though Now I have my companies logo, wifes, a couple key customers, looks great. Thanks again Park2
  6. Hopefully I didn't miss something real obvious here.. I have custom waypoint Icons in my 76CS (used xImage, etc..) and that all shows up perfectly. How do I (or is it possible to) get those custom icons to show up in Mapsource? (6.5 gives the choice for custom icons but they are all the same and I haven't found how to change them) Thanks, Eh! 7. It could be a USB problem caused the other one first I have had to reinstall the Garmin USB drivers twice now. (don't know why). In Device Manager (Control Panel/System/Hardware/GARMIN Devices) delete the Gamin device and reinstall the drivers (install new hardware). They are on the website and the CDROM I believe. (If you are using a USB to RS232 adaptor, first, make sure first the usb port is working and recognizing the adaptor? If you have another serial device you can test using that). Then once you know the USB port is happy, plug in the 60. The bootloader code may be in a non-volitile memory and still work. (Some industrial eq I use is set up this way ('zombie mode'). I can still push in the new code if an update fails with the flash wiped. I don't know if G does this or not though.)
  8. EasyGPS is nice and works very well with GC but doesn't backup your tracklogs should you wish to keep them. I use G7ToWin and it works well. There is also a program called Waypoint+ that in addition to transfering files, will draw a simple plot of your tracklog which is kinda handy. I hadn't heard of Trackmaker before, I'll have to check it out.
  9. Be careful. With my Vista (not C), it was only 3 or 5 volts (can't remember exactly), not the full 12V that my old 12 or new 76CS would take. That is why the lighter plug is so much bulkier, there is a voltage regulator in it.
  10. I have, it works OK but there are a couple nasty side-effects. - It connects all track ends together (the end of 001 is connected to the first point of 002). I just did it after using in 3 cities 2000km apart (biz trip) this week and it shows great long, straight 'tracks' joining up the points I took when the GPS was actually on. - A saved track is limited to 500 points, so if the # of points in your other tracks is greater, you'll lose some points. You can lose some detail if you have a lot of points. That being said, it seemed to be a smart filtering algorithm and my corners stayed pretty sharp.
  11. I have nRoute v2.0 and it is fine, I get 200-300 meters advance notice. You can increase the lead time in Prefs/Navigation Much better driving companion then my significant other, when I ignore nRoute, it doesn't say "WHY DON'T YOU LISTEN TO ME."
  12. I have BlueCharts for the west coast and there are *no* roads visible along he Fraser, etc. in them. Canada Topo is pretty good so I'd check Topos for your area.
  13. I don't know how to get it recognized as a GPS device but I can suggest a partial fix. When Windoze sees serial data coming in a port, it often recognizes it incorrectly as a serial mouse/pointer. Go into Control Panel / System / (possibly Hardware) / Device Manager / Mice & Other Pointing Devices and disable one of them (usually says something about serial mouse). Now it should just sit there. The G35 appears to have NMEA output (ASCII) so you can probably look at the output data while running HyperTerm or such. If you're lucky you may get streets & Trips or similar program to recognize it. more info here: http://www.garmin.com/products/gps35/
  14. The newest version of EasyGPS does it too, just make sure you have v1.3.7 and set your Prefs to a Garmin 60 and check the "Use USB" box (or by serial, both work).
  15. But don't forget the GPS can be confused about where you and it are, (and that could be why it is jumping around). If it thinks you're here but you're there, the bearing is wrong and will still be wrong with a mag compass.
  16. Check the bottom of the laptop and/or the AC adaptor for the electrical info sticker. If the adaptor doesn't say how many watts, just multiply the *output* volts times the amperes (probably something in the range of 16V and 4A) to get watts. This will be a max value, normal operation should be less. 70W will probably cover most laptops, my new Thinkpad is rated @ 70.
  17. g7towin should do it as well (from csv into a GPS)
  18. I haven't used ST2 or Bable but a year or two back I did use Excel and it worked OK. It worked a lot better after I wrote a macro to do all the formatting for me, it was kind of neat watch it chug away.
  19. And make sure the same Datum is in use on the GPS as S&T uses
  20. The User Info is nice but *anyone* can just edit it back after they steal it. A more secure method is to edit the firmware in one of two ways, a program that will do it for you (Google +memap +garmin) or break out the hex editor and change the firmware file you download from Garmins web site (note: not for the bit & bytefully challenged) It's not foolproof, but at least the bad guy will have to steal a PC and a data cable to change it.
  21. Personally I use EasyGPS. but I don't have a USB GPS so most of this should be 100%, I haven't done the USB transfers myself though. 1) Download & Install EasyGPS Only the newest version supports USB I believe, you must have v1.3.7 1a) IF you don't see EasyGPS open after the file download step below, you probably have to do this step: I'm not sure if Easy automatically sets itself as the default program for .loc files? you may have to do this manually (MyComputer/C drive/Tools/Folder Options/FileTypes/New 2) Go to geocaching.com, register, make sure you read and accept the disclaimer 3) load up a list of caches in your area of interest 4) Check the little square boxes on far right side of each cache you want to download (or CheckAll) 5) Click on "Download Waypoints" button at bottom 6) File Download dialog box pops up, press 'Open' 7) File Download dialog box may pop up again, press 'Open' 8) Downloaded waypoints are in the EasyGPS window 9) Plug your GPS into you computer (USB I guess for yours, I only have serial) 10 Turn GPS on, make sure is in Garmin Mode (main menu/protocol/Garmin I think) 11) press Send Button on EasyGPS 12) go caching, have fun Good Luck!

This looks like the closest one: GCJHXD - Layover by Grayling And a close second: It's A Guy Thing by Graylling GCC563 Then a search by closest from there. Have fun!

We're here too. We were quite close to your Door Jam on Saturday but my knees said no after doing most of Yamnuska. Next time..
  24. Multipath interference can be a big problem (just like ghosting on TVs with rabbit ears). Were there any tallish buildings around?
  25. I think that is normal, I've seen that all the time on my Vista and 76. It changes a bit depending on zoom level I believe. Probably just does that to speed up operation.
