  1. let's make sure we have this correct -

    - you have the GPS connected with a USB cable

    - you have the software set for USB

    - and you are getting a Serial Port error ????

is that right? Does not sound good to me.

I don't use EasyGPS but I gotta say it has to have something to do with the program - either a setting or the installation. Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling?

Maybe you can get some help in the GPS & Software Forum. I believe there is an EasyGPS thread - if not start a new topic with your question.

    cc\

Yes all that is correct, but I have an Etrex Legend C and apparently the software requires that I set it to the Garmin 60gs so that it had USB port capability. Tried uninstall and reinstall.

One other thing-and this will really narrow it down, I just used City Select to d/l a route and it has been successful. SO Easy GPS--no connection and with Mapsource, it is fine.

At this point, I may go to GSAK if I can't get this figured out. Thanks

  2. When setting up EasyGPS, there is a check box to use USB when setting up for particular type GPS...

Work you way through dropdown down menus "Files", "Preferences" and your particular GPS brand/model..

Also be sure you load USB drivers ( If you have them) for GPS before connecting GPS to computer.

    Dale

USB is checked. Now I am pretty sure that the drivers were loaded with the Map source City select(I have transferred info re; routes etc) successfully. any ideas you have would be appreciated. Thanks

  3. Still can't get this to work. When EasyGPS checks the connection, it says serial port in use. Ready to throw GPS out the window. Can't d/l waypoints at all. Any help would be appreciated.

  4. 2) Dell went through the the accessories section in the start menu to hyperlink and tested COM1 and COM3. I actually did the test again today and the computer said it could not open COM1 and that I should check the port settings(???).They also checked the windows settings to see if they were correct.

Now we're getting somewhere. The PDA will sync, so it's not a problem with something on the Palm. I'm guessing that something has the COM1 port open.

If you are talking to Dell support, I'm guessing it's a new PC. Generally speaking, COM1 and COM2 are the physical com ports that exist on a newer PC. COM3 is usually for a modem.

So, let's figure out what's got your com ports open. Download and run the program called HijackThis. You can get it at

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Run HijackThis and post the log file here.

    Thanks again. Hijack This Log:

  5. Do you hook up a PDA on your 'puter? If so, the hot sync can hijack the port. On the hot sync icon, right click on it then select exit. That will free up the port for use by the GPSr.

Yes I do use the PDA and I exited Hot Sync but it still locks the screen to select the com port. Does EasyGPS work with USB hook-up? Help!

    Thanks

  6. I have d/l EasyGPS onto the desktop of my computer and I have gone through the set up problem is when I hook the GPS to the computer with the USB port I get this error message: The serial port you connected is receiving data from another device etc.. I have tried all of the USB ports.

No other devices are selected. ALSO, when I get to the SPS settings window in Easy GPS, the program will not let me change the COM post or the settings. The popup screen is locked.

    Help and thanks!

  7. Still having problems. I have saved the GPX file to the desk top and then I dragged it into the converter for cachemate. I then got a response that some of the items were truncated.I then pressed the button to select all of the entries and then I pressed convert. However, the files do not transfer to the palm when I sync. Any suggestions would be appreciated. A step by step instruction is not too basic for me...

  8. Ok, my Palm IIIxe is now up and running. I have downloaded the trial version of cachemate and it is on the Palm. I have a premium membership to create pocket queries. NOW all I need is to figure out what to do to create a pocket query and where do I download it to? Forgive the rookie question and thanks!

  9.

1)You have successfully hotsynced the Palm to the old computer. In the last few days. Is that correct?

The serial port I was refering to was the port on the Palm, not the PC.

2)How did Dell remotely test your PCs serial port? This has me intrigued.

3)I'll go ahead and ask one of the obvious questions. In your hotsync menu, down in the system tray, it "Local Serial" checked?

    hotsync_menu.jpg

Thanks for taking the time to help. I will answer each:

1)yes. I successfully hotsynced on the old computer(win 98), using Palm software for 3.1(that came with it)

    2) Dell went through the the accessories section in the start menu to hyperlink and tested COM1 and COM3. I actually did the test again today and the computer said it could not open COM1 and that I should check the port settings(???).They also checked the windows settings to see if they were correct.

3)yes the Hotsync and Palm settings are for direct serial.

Any help you could give would be appreciated.

  10. Somebody help! I have triad all of the above and I still can't get a connection> I have contacted dell who tested the serial port and it is working, bur I can't tell is an application might be blocking it.Any suggestions?

Has this Palm been hooked up and hotsynced to any PC recently? That is, is there any software on the Palm? You might try doing a full reset, which involves doing a reset with the power button pushed down. Keep in mind this will delete everything on the Palm, including any data or programs that are on it. What it might do is clear anything on the Palm that might have the serial port open. It sounds like the serial connection on the PC isn't even being triggered.

It could be that the serial port is just shot. These things happen. What you can try to do after that is hotsync it to a laptop with an IR port. IR hotsync is slow and ugly, but it can get you out of a jam if you are in one.

    Good luck.

    -E

This Palm has not been Hotsync'd on my new computer with XP(I have attempted unsuccessfully to do that). Last night I tested the palm on the old computer(with no internet access) so I know that the cradle works. I know that the serial port is not shot because I had Dell test it last night.

As far as software, the Palm is using OS 3.5 and the only thing that is on the Palm is avantgo and the initial software that came with it. Iagree that the serial post on the computer is not being triggered but I just don't know why. Thanks for your input.

  11. The only difference I could think of between setting up the palm on the two computers was when I attached the serial cable to the computer the computer was off - and I attached the USB cable with the computer on. I was so frustrated with things not working, I gave up and uninstalled all the palm software and started over - this time turning off the computer to connect the hotsync cradle. The first time I pushed the hotsync button it worked like a charm! Good Luck... Shelly

Hi and thanks for the help. One thing before I try this: Did you reinstall the software, reboot and then insert in the serial drive port when it worked(or did the USB hookup work after you rebooted)? Also, which version did you install on the desktop?

  12. I d/l and installed the newest software for the desktop and set the Hot Syc mgr for Direct Serial. I also made sure that the handheld is set for direct serial. In the setup menu, I tried COM 3 and COM1.

Nothing happens on the computer screen to indicate a connection and the palm still says no connection between the computer and the palm. Any other ideas(thanks again)?

  13. Thanks Moose. It is a desktop computer(Dell) Dimensions 4800 and I am using the serial port. I attempted to use the original desktop software (3.1) and then (4.0). 3.1 is currently the version that I am attempting to use. I am using the COM1 port. The error message is that the connection between the handheld and computer cannot be established.

  14. Hello,

I am trying to set up my old IIIxe for geocaching and I am having connection problems when I HotSync. I have a new computer that uses XP, and I downloaded 4.0.1 Palm desktop(the old OS software is 3.5 and is not compatible with XP). The problem is that when I Hotsync, the Palm states that there is a problem with the connection with the computer. I have done just about everything I can think of and I have followed the palm forum suggestions. I was hoping maybe someone out here ran into the same problem. Any help you could give would be appreciated.

  15. Garmin's US Topo maps do not do an adequate job of showing current roads, nor do they support routing, so if you plan to use the unit for car trips you really need to get CitySelect-North America. I'd recommend using those maps for awhile before deciding on whether you also want to get the US Topo maps. I have both but rarely use the topo maps - I find that when I want to check the terrain using the contour lines that I really need to see a bigger area at one time than I can get on a little GPS screen

I'm the opposite. I have City Select and Topo and rarely use City Select. I pretty much know my way around my part of the state and a quick look at a paper map will show me where I need to go in the few cases I don't know.

Because City Select has little in the way of terrain features, I find it practically useless for geocaching and totally useless for hiking. There no streams (only major rivers) shown, or swamps, or hills, cliffs, ravines etc... I find it very useful to see what terrain features are in my path of travel. Topo has saved me many extra miles of walking by letting me know which side of a stream to start out on and which trail to take.

I admit Topo isn't very up to date with the latest roads. It seems any highway that was built in the past 10 years doesn't show on it, but since there are very few new highways in this area, this really isn't an issue for me.

Another issue is that in many areas, City Select takes up FAR MORE memory than Topo. For example, I can fit most of the northeast using Topo in my 60CS, but I can only fit northern NJ, a small portion of NY and NYC using City Select.

As far as other extras for the Legend C, I'd go with the neoprene carrying case. It protects the screen from scratches and cushions the unit from bumps. It also has a clip that allows you to carry the unit in optimum position (flat) when hiking by attaching it to the top of your pack's shoulder strap.

    Thanks for your input!

  16. I will be using this GPS in the car and for caching. I wanted to know what mapping software I will need for trips in the car and how many New England states does the Legend C hold?

Also, I have heard that topo maps for the Legend C are not recommended because of the small screen and area you can see at once? Is this true?

    Thanks!

Topo works great on the Legend and Legend C. The screen is no more an issue with topo than it is with regular road maps. You can pan out to see a wider area, or in to focus on a smaller area.

If you want to use your unit primarily for hiking and geocaching in the woods, I strongly recommend topo. If your prime use for the GPS will be to find your way around town and for urban/suburban geocaching, City Select is the better choice.

Another issue is that in many areas, City Select takes up A LOT more memory than Topo. See below.

I use both on my 60CS and flip between them depending on my needs. With the 24 megs on the Legend, this might not be an option.

23.6 megs of map coverage in New England for City Select

24.0 megs of map coverage in New England for Topo

Other than getting a different GPS with more memory, are there any other options for the Legend C? Is there an option to d/l only sections of New England for Topo and City Select to conserve memory?
