    Indy cachers?

quote:Originally posted by Metagirrl: (Hi Kit and Bluespreacher!) What's up with this? I'm away from the forums for a couple of days, and you guys go and steal my cache ideas! Just Kidding, but It's pretty funny, 'cause I was going to hike the KT a couple of weeks ago, and was considering placing a series of caches that would serve as clues to a final multicache... Finding the final cache would pretty much require a thru-hike, although it could be done in sections... Whaddya think of that? Maybe we should work together and pool ideas for a nifty group of caches down there I've never hiked the trail before, but I'm looking forward to doing it soon! As for Pixley Knob, no it's not actually on the trail, but fairly close, and certainly accessible from the trail... would either have to bushwack, or take the pixley road where it crosses the trail. I've got the spots marked on my KT maps...There are a couple of other caches in the general vicinity too... Metagirrl Metagirrl@hotmail.com Sorry, metagirrl, Didn't mean to steal your caches! I've not been on the KT, but I have hidden some caches in remote, but ( I think ) interesting places. It seems like most folks around here don't want to hike too far. I'd really like to see some more challenging caches. Of course, that's just to a certain point. See you out there, Bluespreacher
  2. quote:Originally posted by Raul: Is geocaching appropriate for adults? Hi, we were thinking about trying geocaching due to our longstanding interests in orienteering, marine navigation, hiking, and GPSing. However, we noticed that the pictures on the site main page show only children. So we are concerned that if the sport is only for children or families with small children, single people and couples like us would be an intrusion into this family activity. Can anyone advise us about this? Thanks I'm 53 (just a kid). I have lots of fun geochaching. Often my wife goes with me, but many times I go out by myself. The sport is family friendly, that means that you shouldn't put anything illegal, pornographic, or alcoholic in a cache. Bluespreacher

  4. quote:Originally posted by WisconsinTravelers: Hello! I am new to geocaching and want to ask a question. What is the official (or unofficial) policy on hiding caches on private property? We own 23 acres of hilly land and I would like to hide a cache box there but do you think people won't go? The land is bordered by a hwy, private gravel road (The road is ours) and a 15 acre parcel of land owned by our neighbors (Who we don't know yet). We also own a 1/2 acre of woods next to our home that I thought would be fun to put a cache box in but now I am thinking the neighbors may call the cops on them..it is a small neighborhood with 1-3 acre lots for each home. Ally There are at least two caches on private property that I've been to. The owners made it very easy to know what to do when you got there. I like the idea of posting parking coords, too. I don't know about liability. There may be some around here that would. Some disclaimer sounds like a good idea. Bluespreacher

  7. quote:Originally posted by geospotter: I want to thank everyone here and at geocaching.com for giving me a wonderful hobby. My wife and I now spend many weekends together in the area's most beautiful places. Geospotter, I got the tats in the mail today, they're great. Thanks. I think they will make a great addition to some of my caches. Bluespreacher
  8. quote:Originally posted by Capt Prozac: I found out I will be moving in a few months. Do I take down the caches I have hidden, do I tranfer "ownership", or do I just leave it alone. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=16050 Capt Prozac That's a good question, and a good cache, by the description. Are there any locals that would be willing to adopt the cache? You might post the request in the 'North East' section. Bluespreacher
  9. quote:Originally posted by infosponge: There's a _big_ difference between some pervert stalking women in the woods and other folks enjoying nature au naturel. Quite true. There are many areas 'out there' where one might see naked people. So don't go, or just get over it. It may not be for me or you, but it's essentially harmless. IMHO, Bluespreacher

Maybe its just me. _The KGB_ http://www.geocaching.com/profile/default.asp?A=46113 Man, I just set three TB's loose in the wild. Will I ever see them again? Some have not been picked up, some are in cacher's hands. I guess all I can do is hope. Bluespreacher

  12. quote:Originally posted by tenami: I scouted an area, found a great spot for a cache, then had my buddy go and see if he could find the spot. As I was preparing to log the cache, I checked to see if there were others in the area (OK, I should have done that first, but I kind of stumbled onto the area). There was one only .2 miles away. .. snip ... I'd appreciate your thoughts... tenami, .2 miles is pretty close. Of course, I don't know the area, so it's hard to say. Is it a unique area, or just another place just like the other one? That might make a difference. I think the quality is an issue, too. It might be good to hide a really good cache nearby so new cachers get to see how it's supposed to be. Obviously, there are no rules on this. I bet you've got enough common sense to do what is right. 13. quote:Originally posted by Rich in NEPA: Here in NEPA we have a small local State Park comprising a mere 1400 acres, 200 of which is a lake, and it currently holds four Geocaches that are essentially spaced out in different corners. ... snip ... Although it's possible to visit all of them from the same parking spot, it would require hiking 6 to 8 or more miles over hilly terrain. But, for as close as they all may seem to each other, I believe this particular Park can reasonably sustain perhaps two more caches, and still allow enough separation to keep them challenging. _~Rich in NEPA~_ ===__ Rich, Here in the Indy area there are several parks like you describe. Some of our State Parks are relatively small. It's not unusual, though, to find 3 or 4 caches in some of these. I think this is a good thing. It's fun to park the car, and make a day hike out of it. I do think it's important to try to space caches out. How close is too close? Let's just say that caches should be in noticable different areas. Bluespreacher

Rob Mobile Cache Command I bet it'd be a lot of fun bringing a load of ammo boxes across the border! Bluespreacher

  16. quote:Originally posted by Paul Morrison WaylandersMA: I grew up in the coastal town of Woods Hole. The late winter, early spring was not the time to go hang at the the local bar. It was full of very grumpy fishermen. Maybe it is that way with geocaching. People aren't able to get out there because it is too cold or too muddy. A suggestion on some of the flame baits that have started some controversies. Let's stop posting, "what do you think of this type (cache link) or behavior" where it is trivial to find the person that is being discussed. Keep it generic and then it will not devolve to ad hominem attacks. http://mbcf.dfci.harvard.edu/images/1.jpg Thanks for the good ideas. It is easier to 'sit and surf' than it is to 'hide and seek'. What we need is real Spring. Here in Indiana, we've had some wonderful Spring-like weather. But last night it got down into the low 'teens. I was out today to hide two caches. I saw an egg-mass of tadpoles hatching, and some frozen toadstools. I suggest that everyone oil up their hiking boots and charge their batteries. Spring is almost here! Then maybe we can ignore those few that post critical and negative stuff. Bluespreacher
  17. quote:Originally posted by The KGB: I have seen them called trinkets and things like that but is there an official name for the items in a bin. If not, then there should be an "official" name for them that we can put in the glossary, you know like loot, booty nuggets etc....any suggestions? _The KGB_ http://www.garmin.com/graphics/guy.gif Ok, BootyNuggets is cool, but I really like the Aussie, swag. Or is that only while it's still in your pack? Bluespreacher

    Indy cachers?

quote:Originally posted by KITandSHAE: Reviving an old thread (Hi metagirrl!) I've also been poking around for more difficult stuff... Shae and I haven't found more than a few caches. They've been very fun but we're both ready to try something more adventurous. I have an idea for a cache on the Knobstone Trail - ... snip ... Would others in Indiana be interested in caches like that, that require good long treks? Personally, I'd have a ball - but then I'm a backpacker... -- Kit Funny, I was just thinking the same thing! Had my KT map out this morning. I'm not as familiar with the KT as you are, but it is in some of the roughest country around here. Is the Pixely Knob cache on the KT? I haven't gotten it yet, but I think Metagirrl has. At any rate, I decided to hide some caches like I'd want to hunt. I've been enjoying the easy and urban caches, but it's time to do more. Let's knock ourselves out! Bluespreacher
