I rarely zoom beyond the 500 ft level, unless I'm trying to plot a goto back to a point on my track log history because I'm totally lost in the woods. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

Question about Mapsend software
infosponge replied to Cap'n Cache's topic in GPS technology and devices
I think my MapSend Topo map of Florida fits in around 26Mb, so 6Mb is probably enough for somewhere between a large metro area and part of a state. It probably depends on road density in the area you'd like to map out. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
Single cache downloads to GPX instead of .loc would be VERY nice... http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

I'll keep fiddlin'...I wonder if I copy the native DLL's over from a Win98 install... And Dan...you know if you ever decide to do a Linux version, I'll be first in line to pay for a copy. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

Did you have to do anything special to get EasyGPS working? ExpertGPS got a little farther after I installed IE6, but it's still crashing. And it sure freaks me out to have IE6 on Linux...it seems like it's violating some law of nature. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

Just for kicks, I tried running NG Topo! under the latest version of Crossover Office / Wine with RedHat 7.3 / Ximian Desktop 2 and it works quite well! It even was able to communicate with my Meridian GPS for exchanging waypoint and track data. The printing of maps failed, but I haven't spent any time to configure or debug why. It's probably fixable. One less reason to use Windows now. Now, if only ExpertGPS didn't crash and burn in COO/Wine... http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

Geocaching and PDA--Newbie Question
infosponge replied to Gator2151's topic in GPS technology and devices
For me, GPX Spinner + Plucker + ExpertGPS = Nirvana. Or at least as close as you can get without having equivalents to all that stuff running on Linux. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
Garmin vista vs Magellan platimum or color

Generic (i.e. non-Magellan) memory cards are inexpensive and readily available. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:If you travel a lot and want scads of memory, go with the Magellan (remember though that their memory expansion cards aren't exactly pennies). http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
Magellan "NorthFinder" on MAP330?
infosponge replied to Team Chevelle's topic in GPS technology and devices
Until I recently upgraded my MeriGreen to a MeriPlat, I used this quite a bit. Under daytime conditions where the sun is not directly overhead, it's quite good. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
New king of rechargable batteries crowned
infosponge replied to Team Trout's topic in GPS technology and devices
I ran another test, this time with the Meridian (basic, green) and it went 11 hours to the low battery warning. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -

I think you need a charger designed for NiMH. quote:Originally posted by TNRonin:If I get these can I use my rayovac charger that I've been using with my alk rechargable? Thanks. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -

OK, my first run of the Powerex 2200 mAh cells lasted 10.5 hours to the low battery warning. This is a pair of the 2200's that have been discharged 3 times now and charged with the MAHA C401FS charger on the "slow" setting. I just left the Meridian Platinum running with the compass turned off and the almanac screen active. I'll run through this cycle a few more times, as well as trying to see how much time is left after the low battery warning. I generally use my GPSR in a mix of battery/12V car adapter usage, so 10 hours is more than enough for a solid day of cache-a-thon-ing with juice to spare. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
We get pretty good EGNOS reception down here...maybe someone in Europe is trying to make it harder to geocache in Florida by sending us bad corrections. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

Lets see who has bought the most GPS units ??
infosponge replied to GOT GPS?'s topic in GPS technology and devices
I'm glad I'm not the "worst offender" here. - Magellan MAP 410, my first GPS. Mapping, no WAAS, eats batteries like crazy. Still works. - Magellan Meridian (mine, perhaps soon to be my daughter's) - Magellan Meridian (spouses) - Navitrak DNA. - Magellan Meridian Platinum (my newest toy) - loaded with the Marine basemap, so it's a MeriMariPlati? http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -

I've been using those 2200's for about a week now and love 'em. This is the first time I've been happy with the performance of rechargables in my GPSR. When I get a chance I'm going to load a fresh set in my Meridian and just leave it on until it runs down to get a better idea of the battery life. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
It's related to the pH of the juice, rather than any caffeine content, AFAIK. quote:Originally posted by gt40:(That's one reason Cranberry juice is perscribed for folks with urinary tract infections -- it's high in caffene and will make you urinate more.) http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

SCREEN NAME IS MORE THAN AN ALIAS
infosponge replied to sept1c_tank's topic in General geocaching topics
Infosponge, because I am an information sponge. Some college roommates called me that many years ago and it stuck. A few years ago I moved to a town that's rather popular as a tourist destination because of it's history of sponge diving/harvesting in the Gulf of Mexico. Pure coincidence. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
GPX Spinner makes blank index.htm file?
infosponge replied to infosponge's topic in GPS technology and devices
Whatever it was, re-installing seemed to fix it! GPX Spinner is an excellent program...but I may have to hack out a Unix version just so I don't have to deal with the Wonderful Windows House-O-Cards to get my cache pages. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
GPX Spinner makes blank index.htm file?
infosponge replied to infosponge's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'm using that file as-is, i.e. I haven't modified it. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com -
Has anyone seen a situation where GPX spinner starts producing an index.htm file with no caches listed in it? Everything else in the template seems fine and all the individual cache pages are generated. No error messages, etc., as far as I can see. This was working great and I don't believe I've changed anything...but the last few days worth of PQ's that I drag into it are like that. Just wondered if anyone else had seen this before I take the drastic step of deleting everything and re-installing. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

I miss this feature, but for now I've gotten quite used to using PQ to export a GPX file to GPX Spinner and/or ExpertGPS and it works quite well. It's not handy if I want to check out an area that I don't have a PQ set up for, though. It would be neat if there were some "canned" PQ's available to all members that were set up as one zip file with all caches for each state that could be downloaded at will and generated once per day. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

Anything is better than an empty cookie jar. I can't figure out what that has to do with geocaching...unless mom & dad were too busy geocaching to go to the grocery store so the cookie jar is empty? http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com

I've found if you go re-save an existing query you usually get it in the mail very soon. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
