  1. There are some space-themed caches along the coast that are nice, especially if you're interested in the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo programs and what-not. These were memorable, but not so difficult that they don't fit in with a cache-a-thon or other activities: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCGCWX http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCD5E2
  2. There is a farly active community at http://www.cacheflorida.com with at least a few other folks in your area.
  3. If you're in the Chester county PA, Newcastle County DE, etc. area and have a travel bug you'd like to get to Florida, drop me a note and I may be able to help you out if you can drop it somewhere in the next 4-5 days. I probably won't have time to read the forums here, so contact me directly.
  4. There is a nice series of 3 or 4 caches along a hike east of Orlando that you'd probably like. We came up with a good list at http://www.cacheflorida.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=9 I'll second the vote for "Wings over Orlando" as well...that was a cool virtual & we had a lot of fun there. One of the photos we took there has become my computer desktop wallpaper.
  5. Well, I may wind up going back to 4.06 for my MeriPlat. 1. too many keystrokes to do a GOTO. 2. 5.12 has broken the temperature/barometer display for the Platinum. It now has a blank screen with "no data" displayed. 3. random keypresses cause the backlight to turn on! Usually some combination involving the ESC key will cause the backlight to just turn on. Once again, Magellan dissapoints...
  6. quote:Originally posted by BeachBuddies:> user maps will be shown first in the database/goto-list That's no feature...that's a pain in the butt. I have four detail maps, so now, changing the GOTO is like this: GOTO (a goto is active, do you know what you're doing, mr moron?) ENTER (do you want a new GOTO, I mean, you just pushed the GOTO button?) ENTER (here's a list of all 4 of your detail maps, just to annoy you!) DOWN DOWN DOWN DOWN (ah, "user waypoints", why would you want those?) DOWN ENTER (nearest to your position, or some random location that's useless to you?) ENTER (here's your waypoint list, sucker!) DOWN ... DOWN ENTER I can't believe how BAD the user interface is now for something as simple as a GOTO.
  7. Regarding USF, the story I heard was that at the time the University was chartered that was as far south as they thought anyone would be willing to live in Florida. I guess that was pre-air conditioning and large scale mosquito control? Don't know...but it is funny.
  8. I will try to make the geographic distinctions a bit clearer. It's not easy when the state is so large. A lot of us have no clue where a particular county in the state is, but we know the region around Miami, or the area around Jacksonville. So when area is keyed "Miami / South Florida" that means "South Florida". Unless it's the University of South Florida, which is really Tampa.
  9. There's more to bloat than just sheer disk size (and 76Mb is nothing to sneeze at). Who knows what other creative Microsoft security problems installing something like that will introduce? quote:Originally posted by quakemap.com:The .NET Windows component is not that big (23Mb download, 76Mb when installed) and doesn't add to processor utilization. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  10. I'll pass on QuakeMap...I'd rather not bloat up my PC with the .NET framework. :-p http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  11. You can trade your Gecko for my MeriPlat when you can pry it from my cold dead hands. Does your Gecko have the "hypnotize armadillos" button that my MeriPlat does? Nope, didn't think so. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  12. This happened to me twice last weekend and once again today. I log a cache, then immediately either go view the cache or go to "My Cache Page"...my log is not there. The geocaching database seems to be (silently) not accepting the insert of the log, and I have to go back and re-enter it. When this happened last weekend, I also got an error page with some deadlock messages about 10 minutes later, so I'm assuming it was related to the system being busy. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  13. This is the first weekend in quite a while where all my queries have been running like clockwork. Very cool!! http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  14. Once you've been through the menus a few times, it seems pretty intuitive. Menu -> Database -> User then select the waypoint & you can edit it. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  15. I've been using the Powerex 2200's and the Maha 401 charger for about a month now, and I've finally gotten weaned off my "buy AA's in bulk at the warehouse store" habit. I like that the 401 charger includes a car adapter so I can top off the cells in the car in a pinch. (haven't had to do it yet though) My previous experiences with rechargables in my GPSR were maddening because it seemed like they'd give out with no warning with a short battery life, but things have come a long way since then. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  16. I didn't get my monday GPX query, but my tuesday one just arrived, so it seems to be working. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  17. quote:Has anyone received a _gpx_ type query from Geocaching.com? If so, my queries are not generating correctly. My main daily query never arrived on monday. Haven't seen the tuesday one yet, but it seems to run later in the day, so we'll see. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  18. I'm getting used to the fact that my queries may or may not show up on a given day, but like Robert said, it would be great to have some kind of status added to the list of queries so that I'd know if it was generated and got "lost in the e-mail" along the way or something. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  19. quote:Originally posted by Breaktrack:Hmmmm, well, that's interesting. I thought this was our playground. Perhaps we've mis-used some of the playground equipment from time to time, but that's the nature of the beast. I love ya Jeremy, but man, lighten up....LOL. Let's hope the Webby Awards has a "Best Benevolent Dictatorship Site" category next year. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  20. It seems like every weekend the PQ's just get discarded because the site is busy. I rarely get my Saturday or Sunday PQ, and now here it is Tuesday and I haven't even gotten my Monday PQ yet. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  21. Jeremy has said over and over that this is not a competition, and to post stats would encourage competition and all the general BS that goes along with it (i.e. cheating). I personally enjoyed Dan's site, more for the feeling of community that went along with knowing what other cachers were up to and who's who in a particular area. It was also the source of some *friendly* competition between myself and some others, which rather than detracting from my geocaching experience certainly enhanced it. At one point I was willing to take over Dan's site, but I could never find out what the traffic / server load was from him, and didn't want to commit to something that was going to run up my bandwidth bill and not pay it's way. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  22. Send a note to logo@Groundspeak.com and someone will get back to you about it. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  23. It will work. Magellan is famous for those products being a few years behind the state of the current hardware, though. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  24. It's pretty easy to tell the nudist geocachers from the stalker perverts... The nudist geocachers are just nude and geocaching. The stalker perverts are... well, being perverts. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com
  25. quote:Originally posted by robertlipe: Since the source for the site isn't exactly open, I can't help fix them. (And if it was written in open tools, I'd put my money where my mouth is and help fix some of these things.) Same here. If the site was done in open tools instead of the .NET stuff, Jeremy would have so many volunteers lined up to help that stuff would get done in HOURS instead of months. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com [This message was edited by infosponge on August 09, 2003 at 08:11 AM.]
