  2. I am completely and totally against Barney the(Purple Anti-Christ!) Dinosaur and anything related to Chuck E. Cheese (a giant rodent that sells cheese? Who do they think they are kidding?!). I refuse to let my children watch them on TV, the Grandparents have already been put on notice as to what is and isn't allowed in our home and I refuse to purchase, cache-out or in any subsidize the on-going war against human decency that these two commercial figures represent.

HOWEVER, if I find items related to those entities within a geocache, I simple ignore it. To allow these Evil Shepards of Broadcast Television to even grace my fore-brain in the form of negative thought (ooops! I'm doing it now!) is to give them strength through negativity. I have better things to think about, more productive things to do with my life than get upset, frustrated or bemused about someone else's attempt at subjugating my open-minded and sensative offspring. Why strengthen the position of these heinous characters by paying attention to their blasphemy? By acknowledging these purpetrators of kid-brain-washing I am giving a minimal amount of credence to their campaign of terror and commercialism.

Well, it SHOULD answer the question or solve the problem, but it doesn't. I log in to GC.com and when I reach the forums I click on "login". But yet, when I click on the double quotes to reply to a specific post, OR when I click on reply to topic I get the same thing - while I am logged in and it takes a minimum of two tries before it will let me type anything. 5. That each time I open up a cache description page, the small map located near the top of the page is a representation of an area NO WHERE NEAR the actual location of the cache? Have we been hacked?

Another problem that I have consistently is that when I click on "Post a new topic" or attempt to reply to one (I'm logged in)... I get bumped back to the list of forums/main discussion page. It wouldn't be a bad thing if this happened on occasion, but it happens everytime and always two or three times before I am taken to the page that a topic or reply is typed into. It is becoming very frustrating. I thought that it might have been some quirk of the new discussion/forums set-up... but hey! It's been over a month now.

Is anyone else having this problem?

It is people like this that show a complete disregard for the actual Nature - while saying that they are bringing people out to Nature - that are giving our sport/hobby a black eye to folks like Park Rangers, Earth-Firsters (of which I am strongly against, thanks for asking) and those morons in ELF.

What's next is a ban in all public use areas of the destructive act of Geocaching if this kind of behavior is aloud to propagate. It would be a bit tougher if the cache placer had put his brain to placing a well-camoflaged container that emulated the outside of the tree instead of claiming his right of manhood to use his new "tool" indiscriminately.

Wow! 611 caches! Bruce, I looked at your profile and I don't know how you do it. Are you inhuman? Three or four days in a row with 19 to 20 caches per day? I'm living in the wrong part of the country and I want the phone number to the government agency that installed your bionic parts!

Any food with a high oil content would bad for a cache, and coffee has a lot of oil... that is what makes it so appealling....... coffee, coffee... I need MORE!

As for popcorn, see if you can get gift certificates from your local video rental store for free popcorn and place those with the movie. It would work for me. I like anything free. Coffee.

That's true and the main reason we haven't headed out there sooner... okay, that and we don't have a boat. And the mention of rattlesnakes... and the fact that we really don't think it would be a suitable cache to take the kids on.

I've thought of sending them email to see if they have checked up on it, if they live nearby and can offer any tips, etc. I'll do that now...

  12. Many, many years ago my family and I were traveling the wide world and my brother got a tick... right in between his shoulder blades. We noticed it a few hours after it latched on.

We stopped to visit friends and the mom is a nurse. She doused the tick and surrounding area with Campho-phenique (sp?)... that tick couldn't have backed out faster. It also cleaned and disinfected the bite area.

Is this method no longer useful? I still see campho in stores.

  13. I am currently putting together a themed cache and the items are rather large, if not heavy. I needed a larger than average container.

I've been working on this problem for months and finally came up with a solution: Gallon or larger-sized food containers from restaurants.

In one evening we were offered four very nice and perfectly suitable (for what I'm doing, anyway) containers that had at one time held food products... one restaurant even ran the two they gave us through their industrial dishwasher and the inside was nice and clean. The other two will take some soaking to get the grease out.

But they have nice, tight lids and are designed to not allow leakage in or out. I'm preparing to use some of the hints on other threads to disguise the one for my next cache.

Has anyone else discovered this free source?

  15. Heck, me and Steak did 12 while night caching in Grants Pass! Most of those were the "I hate I-5" series and most of the others were near the freeway if not right off of it.

Oregone... you'll be hitting KF next month? So, does this mean that you AREN'T making the trip to Karen's Klamath Cache challenge by May 10th...??? Hmmm???

    Inquiring minds...

And you'd better let us know the date you'll be there, maybe we'll see you at some caches? What's the address of a good brewery? How about a sushi cache in Ashland? I'm up for that!

  16. I agree that there just shouldn't be a lot of unenforceable rules... my rear isn't so tight that I expect everyone to think and act exactly as I do while enjoying this sport. But...

As was mentioned before, the person who plans, organizes and places a geocache is doing so because they want to see if others will come visit their creation and if they do, whether or not they enjoyed their visit. In some cases, a great deal of money and time goes into placing a cache. I believe that the person who seeks and finds the cache owes the owner the courtesy and consideration of letting them know it has been found, what condition it is in and their opinion on the subtibility of the area in general. It may be an ego-thing, but if only 1 in four visitors to my cache logged it online, I would become discouraged and stop placing caches.

The same is true for Travel Bugs. They cost money. There is a bit of thought that goes into the item/bug/attachment to that little tag, and the story surrounding it that encourages others to pick them up and share their geocaching travels with the little visitors before leaving them for someone else to share. A TB needs it's placement, pick-ups and drop-offs, recorded on the website in order for the mileage, etc. to get calculated. If one cannot be considerate enough to post the pick-up and placement of TB's, they shouldn't take them from caches.

    Yeah!

This is a WAY COOL idea! Of course we had the world famous and very generous Fractal to introduce us to the basic bustle of Hillsboro (YUM - Pizza Schmizza!) and aid us in finding our hotel, but I can't imagine that everyone coming to your Pacific Northwest metropolis will be so blessed.

I was really hoping to see the famous digs where Oregone leans on the bar and seduces semi-innocent women, but hey, we had the kids with us! Now, that spot should definitely be on the Official Tour!

I highly recommend the place that we stayed (it is only 1.5 miles from Contact Cache), as the rooms are large and they have a nice (free) continental breakfast if you can get motivated before 10 a.m. (not one of my strong points). I also picked up a ton of tourist brochures for our next trip up (probably around early Fall, when it begins to cool off).

Oregone, I nominate you as Portland's Embassador of Cache! Viva la Placemente!

We learned of a backroad into that area yesterday - one that doesn't require traversing the dreaded 299 Highway (aka: The Highway of Doom). 19. Geez, I suck!

I was born in Southern California. My Mom is a native Californian. My Dad migrated from Kansas.

I moved to coastal Northern California so as not to shoot some idiot during a freeway commute (really, I had that b.b. gun in my sweaty hand...).

I've lived in Crescent City since '89. I came with a So. Cal. attitude, but the rain washed it away. My kids were born here, and I refuse to let them grow up someplace worse or more dangerous. There aren't as many opportunities for work here, but I've managed to get around that and make my own opportunities.

Now Steak... that boy was born in Ohio. His Mom moved him to Moss Landing (near Monterey) until he was seven and then they moved to Brookings. That's where I found him. Took him six years of living with me to get a California license, and he still keeps his Oregon license... he doesn't want to let go!

It is funny, Californians treat us like we're Oregonians and Oregonians treat us like we have a plague... even when we bring our money there to shop. I've considered moving to Newport (you'll never get me away from the coast), but it is hard to relocate a business like mine.

Don't think bad of me... I might as well be an Oregonian! I'm more a resident of Obfuscation.

Oh, and Monterey IS NOT Northern California, no matter what anyone says! Look on the map - it's in the middle of the state, just like San Francisco! I live in the REAL Northern California... 24 miles from the Oregon border!

  20. Okay you Southern Oregonians and Northeastern Californians...

There is a CACHE that will have it's first birthday celebrated without being found on May 10th.

Karen's Klamath Cache, though a 4/4 rated cache, would probably not be so tough if we worked together to get it found. Somebody got a boat?

My challenge is this: Are we hard-core geocachers going to let this cache celebrate it's difficulty? I would like to suggest that a group of us get together on a specified date and try and nab it, OR plan a get-together nearby somewhere and find it then... I suppose they are the same thing, but I think that the latter may attract more folk than the former.

I'm open for suggestions! Watch, now that I've brought it up, someone will find it solo and rub it in my nose...

  21. Who, me?

I agree that things got tense after the "big change" and that was why I stopped reading or contributing to the forums for a few weeks. I haven't even visited the chat sessions, are they still happening?

And I don't consider this an impersonal place to attack someone on the other side of the continent, but that is just me.

Anyone who knows me knows that if I'll write it, say it on the radio, etc., I will back it up in person. I've been told that I have "*alls that clank"... though I don't know if that is a compliment. To keep it simple, speaking my mind, in person or in writing, has never been something I balk at. I attempt to be diplomatic and I don't reduce my discussions to foul-language, slang and slander. Just the facts - as I see them.

If I have offended anyone, I apologize. Not for what I may have said, but I'm sorry if they were offended.

I don't see my "request" (I said PLEASE, after all.) as an attempt at controlling your participation.

You are right, there is no written guideline that Jeremy expects each cache to adhere to or not be posted to the site. He assumes, right or wrong, that most of us are adults, intelligent and responsible for our actions. It is also assumed, by the frequent posts to that affect, that common sense should take precident whenever a cache is placed and when one choses to hunt them. Common sense would dictate that if there isn't a rule against cache placers making rules about their caches, then they CAN, and will. Each of us can and should use common sense when making the descision of whether or not to seek these caches, and that entails being prepared which would include reading all of the directions before attempting a find. Those who don't read the rules/warnings/cautions/suggestions and then are disappointed or injured do so at their own risk.

Evidently you didn't understand, or chose not to acknowledge MY thinly-veiled point: You calling the cache placer arrogant and manipulative in this instance is in and of itself arrogant and manipulative - not to mention condescending and aggressive - by your own use of phrasing and your unending posts in what seems to be an attempt to gain the "last word", as you seemingly attempt to do in all of the subjects on this forum in which you participate.

Am I attacking you personally? If I am it is in the same manner in which you called the cache placer who originally posted this thread manipulative and arrogant.

You know, but I could be wrong. Maybe you typed that comment with a smile on your face. The printed word, though accurate in conveying an idea or thought does not easily convey the emotion of the author. So, if I understood your original comments to be an attack, personal or not, on the author of this thread, I hope you will understand that my above comments are completely sincere.

If, on the other hand, you were making light of the situation that angered and unnerved the author of this thread by your comments, and you meant them in a boisterous and joking manner, please except my apology for my misreading of your intent.
