  1. Well, I'm not a statistician, but assuming that Groundspeak staff are a representative sample of the US population, then it is a reasonable assumption that 26% of them have passports.

    Evidently not.

So, rather than laughing at my evidently pathetic assumptions about a sample of a population, I'd prefer it if you'd take the time to offer me some of your presumably superior knowledge to explain why my simplistic assumption is incorrect.

  2. Folks remember, these edicts are devised, "implemented", by people, 75% of whom do not even have a passport.............

You've been to Groundspeak HQ and counted have you?

No need, it's a widely published fact that only 26% of American Citizens have passports.

    See http://www.hotelmarketing.com/index.php/co...ssports_issued/

    for example.

    Andy

And how appliccable (and indeed how relevant) is that stat to the staff at Groundspeak?

Well, I'm not a statistician, but assuming that Groundspeak staff are a representative sample of the US population, then it is a reasonable assumption that 26% of them have passports.

Of course, being interested in GPS, it's possible (I would say probable) that a higher proportion of them are interested in travel and would therefore have passports.

I think that the original comment was designed to highlight the opinion that Groundspeak aren't particularly interested in anythign non-us-centric.

I personally feel that getting banned for a possibly inadvisable forum post is a little extreme.

  3. I had this happen on my yellow etrex about a year ago. I emailed garmin and asked about repairs. They said that they could repair it for me. I asked them to confirm whether there was a charge and they said it would be free. They actually sent me a brand new unit.

  4. I've just phoned Blacks in Bluewater, who opened their package whilst I was on the phone. Their information says that they start on the 9th. Shame as I'm going to be driving past Bluewater in about 2 hours' time.

Luckily the participating store list says that all stores will soon be participating, so hopefully I'll be able to get one from the Blacks store just 4 doors away from my office.

  5. I'd also recommend the yellow garmin etrex. I've had one for about 8 years now, and it's been very good. The cheapest place I've seen one is online at bigbenaudio.co.uk for £59. I've never bought from them, so I couldn't comment on the shop.

The etrex camo is identical to the yellow etrex, but easier to lose. I'd expect it to be less desirable, so it may be cheaper.

Good luck with the cache hunting.

  6. The best advice is:

    * Whatever you send out, don't make it too desirable or someone will nick it (Gold plated iPods don't last long as travel bugs)

    * If your bug has a mission, print it out, laminate it and attach it to the bug. It may then have a chance of being taken in the right direction.

    * If your bug has a destination, don't get too disappointed when it ends up going in completely the wrong direction.

    * Be prepared to wait ages while your bug languishes in a 5/5 cache at the top of a mountain which can only be accessed with a helicopter.

    * Be prepared to wait ages while your bug languishes in a random cacher's caching bag.

But other than those downsides, it's a fun thing to watch to see where your bug has got to, and I think most of them do last a fair while travelling around.

  7. Hello & Welcome

You will have more fun just out finding caches than coming on here at the minute.

There is a sensitive bunch on here who analyise every typed word and will for the most part try to be helpful just make sure you use lots of smilies or they will just pick you up wrong.

Best place to go is uk geochat thats where you'll find out what some of the folk here are really like.

    :laughing: :laughing: :laughing::unsure: :unsure:

I wouldn't say we're that sensitive a bunch on here. As with any random group of people, there are some who rub each other the wrong way and don't get on, but I find that this forum is generally friendly and helpful. It's certainly a lot better than some forums I've looked in on and been amazed at the flame wars and insults that go on.

I must try geochat again some time. Last time I tried, I had problems with irc and I've never got around to it again since.

  8.

I agree that internal links still work and I haven't tried any image links.

However straightforward links as in GC1AH3N and GC11KN5 seem to have been rewritten.

Geochecker seems to be an exception

The links on my caches work OK. The links on your GC1AH3N both seem to point at about:blank, and viewing the source shows that they are null.

It's not because they originally linked to files rather then pages is it? (Such as word files). I seem to recall that Groundspeak decided to disallow this because of the risk of viruses being transmitted in this way. If this is the case, you'll have to make the link go to a webpage which then links to the file.

Try converting your link to point at a web page and see if that works.

On your GC11KN5, the source code point at a blank page. I think it should say:

    <a href="www.15ddv.me.uk/geocaching/maze01-zdhwo2mj6.html">visit link</a>

Also, make sure that the box is ticked for "The descriptions below are in HTML"

  9. I've got myself a new PDA (Sorry Moote - It's another Palm TX!)

I've got Tomtom 5 installed on it, which is much better than the ViaMichelin I had on my old PDA.

I know how to create and upload POI files onto it.

What I want to know is how to add customised warnings to it, so I can have a voice saying "Approaching Geocache", rather than a funny bugle sound.

A google search hasn't helped me much (although I Think the sounds need to be .ogg files), and nor has a search of the forums.

So: Can anyone tell me how to add custom sounds?

And: Does anyone have a set of custom sounds for caches and 'safety' cameras?

  10. If you'd rather use your names Gobbi and Womble, than you could re-register with the new names, and then just re-log the caches under your new user accounts. If you want to do this, then I'd suggest you do it sooner rather than later, as re-logging 9 caches isn't too much effort, but doing 100 would be.

You used to be able to change username on the site, but you can't anymore since they changed database software.

You can't delete a user account either, so you can just leave the old account to be dormant.

  11. Trust me a bite from an adder is very painful and the jabs you get afterwards are even more so, well I am a big chicken!!! :D

So, Nick, is there anything you haven't been bitten/stung/injured by? As Ali said the other week, can we look forward to your reports of having your arm broken by a swan? :D

  12. I'd say that you're perfectly in the right. regardless of what many people think about micros, if that's what the cache placer wants to place, then that's what the cache is. If finders decide to change the cache container, then it's not the cache as placed.

This is actually not much different to someone 'changing' a large ammo can for a tupperware box!

As for them wanting to leave a cache in Ireland whilst on honeymoon, shouldn't that be counted as a 'vacation cache' and not be allowed?

  13. The UK is on the Eurasian plate, which is (If I recall correctly) moving south-east at a rate of about 1 cm per year. This is about the speed at which your fingernails grow.

It was 7 years ago when I did that training course, and I didn't look it up, so I might not be 100% on the exact direction and rate.
