  1. So far, I have never been questioned about what I'm doing. I usually have my 10 year old son with me and when he decides to look in the bushes at something it creates a good ruse to keep people from paying too much attention. When I am caching solo in an urban area, I carry a clipboard and wear an orange relflective vest. It's amazing how it almost makes you invisible to muggles.

  2. I'm thinking about selling my Colorado 400I, Its already preloaded with the inland lakes data, it has CN 2011, and I believe, have bluechart as well. I guess I'm just posting this to see if anyone would be interested in buying it and maybe shoot me some offers. There is a small scuff on the screen, but it does not block the screen from being viewed. Will gladly send a pic if you want one.

    Thanks Swampbilly

  3. I am in the Army, so when we move to a new location, we don't know much about the area. Since we started geocaching, we have been introduced to history lessons, new parks with hiking trails, great views and so forth. It's not that expensive, and the whole family can get out of the house and enjoy it while spending time together. I saw in an earlier post of how someone started geocaching. Maybe that would be a good idea for a new topic.

  4. Thanks I am going to continue using the 60 for turn by turn and when I deploy again, just take it with me with some free topo maps, and what Uncle Sam gives us and that should be enough. I have been over plenty of times without this stuff but anything that gives you an edge, is OK in my book, and a GPSr that you use everyday is alot more efficient than one "issued to you". IMO

  5. I am going to buy a dedicated car unit, but after this purchase that may be just a little longer. I was just wondering how the Delorme performed on the road. For now the 60 is doing just fine with road navigation, and I will continue to use it for that and everything else the 60 is good for.

One more question...can you use the maps from GPS file depot with the PN-40? I don't see any topo maps for Iraq and Afghanistan on the delorme site unless I'm not looking hard enough.

  6. Thanks...I have been leaning towards a PN-40 for a while now but riding the fence between another Garmin or trying something new. I just ordered it, and it should be at home waiting for me when I graduate from school here in Missouri in a week. The wife doesn't know about it yet...I am thinking about surprising her with a slightly used 60Csx for Christmas lol. See if that will cool her down a bit.

  7. That's pretty much what I was looking for. My 60CSx works great for navigating on the road , and caching, I really just want the paperless option. I would like voice directions but, having never had them, I don't know what I am missing lol. Ignorance is bliss I guess. But, with that being said, I will take a look at some of the dedicated car GPS prices. One more question too....is the PN-30 and 40 the same except for the electronic compass and altimeter?

Ha!! nevermind that last question...just answered it using the link at the bottom of your post embra. Thanks

  8. I have been reading alot about paperless units. I have tried out the Colorado for geocaching, and currently own a Garmin 76CS and a 60CSX. I have decided on the Delorme but just have one more question about it? How is it when navigating on the road for trips and stuff. With the correct software loaded, can I find an address and then navigate to it like with the 60Csx and City Navigator? Does it do turn by turn directions. If there is already a forum or thread, I will gladly check it out. Thanks

  9. I bought a Colorado 300 today, and started playing with the map software. I had a Missouri Topo from GPSfiledepot in Mapsource, so I decided to install it and see how it looked. I looked through it, and tried to go back to the default map from the Colorado. It was gone. I have gone into the map menu and tried to select the map but no dice. I went into the folder through my computer, and deleted the MO topo to see if it would come back up. Still nothing. Any suggestions would be great. It's gonna be a little while before I can spend the money on City Navigator, and the base map was pretty good.

  10. Ok I have been reading this thread for a while and thought I would throw my little bit in. Back in 2003, me and 4 other buddies decided to hike up to Rabun Bald in North East GA. We were fresh back from Iraq and needed a little adventure so we decided that the next 4 day weekend we would go camping. We were from all over the country GA, MA, OK, CA, I can't remember now where the medic was from LOL. It was in November, and the weather was awesome the first night,.... the second night was another story. It started drizzling before we went to bed, and by the next morning the drizzle had turned to light ice. We woke up to no fire, wet, and cold as a well digger's a**. We tried lighting a fire but were getting no results. I started scavenging around, and found a "fat lighter" stump. Being from GA, I had grown up using "fat lighter" to start fires with all my life, something the others had never heard of. I hacked away at the stump to get to the "good stuff", and started collecting the splinters. I came back to the fire pit, and was able to start a fire and the "fat lighter" burned long enough to dry the other wood. Needless to say, I now travel with a bundle of the stuff in my pack whether it's a day hike or longer "just in case". I know for alot of you from different regions, this material may not be available, but a google search for "fat lighter" or "fat wood" will produce some results, and options to purchase. I googled it just now and found this really good link to show a more in depth and visual example of this awesome material.

  11. I love my Dell Axim X30. Dell doesn't make them anymore but you can find the X30 or other models reasonably priced on Ebay, etc. Install GPXsonar to view cache pages, log finds and transfer the logs to GSAK. Spiffy...

Thanks, that's exactly the kind of help and information I have been looking for.

  12. Hey There

I have been looking through the forums for info related to handhelds, and I'm not having any luck. I tried going to geocaching-u.com, but it's not loading. I am trying to go paperless, I have the 60CSx and I know how to use GSAK to get the basic information on it. Sometimes you need the cache description, and hint to get the job done. I understand that I do not have a true paperless unit, and have decided to purchase a PDA. My biggest problem is that I don't know squat about handheld PDA's. LOL Other than you hold them in your hand. I would just like a few different makes and models that are geocaching and PQ friendly. I will gladly use cachemate or another program if I have to. Once I know what models work I will make the purchase and start the process of learning a new piece of equipment. I just don't to run out and buy something that has never heard of geocaching and neither has any of it's software. If there is a forum post or thread that you know about I will gladly go there also and keep reading.

    Thanks
