  1. i do think it includes dnf's logged and maintenance logs too. so in theory if you did 150 finds 30 dnf's and maintenance logs to your 20 caches then it will look like (on the icache system) as you being more active than someone who did 150 finds and didnt log their dnf's etc.

  2. you can pick up a basic second hand etrex h on ebay for about £40 i still have mine which i keep as back up. it be a good start or go for something thats paperless like an orgeon 200/300

personally i would start off with something cheap, if you like it then you can invest in something better, if you dont then you didnt spend too much (and the device holds its value on ebay so ive noticed).

  3. Just a little grumble from myself about cachers in 4x4's. Went out to check some caches at the weekend and was approched by a local who had noticed the gps on me and came over to moan that us lot are ruining his village etc etc and made some points about the 4x4's that were there the other day.

I then have a cacher who told me that whilst out caching in that area another comment of 4x4's ruining the bridle paths come up.

Then today another cacher pointed out how difficult it was to do the series as the tracks had been dug up by 4x4's.

Ok you can say "how comes the cachers are being blamed?" well I've lived around here for 25 years and have never seen the paths around here dug up like this and when the series was placed there was very little mud and the tracks were not dug up. Ive even read one cacher who attempted (and succeed) to cross a foot bridge in his 4x4, the bridge isnt designed for 4x4's and to even drive down this bit in a 4x4 is not only dangerous but puts others at risk as there is no escape route for joe public if they come across a 4x4.

Well sorry for the grumble, but hopefully those who do geocache in 4x4's might take note and understand that while they might be getting round quicker and drier, their actions are making it unpleasant for others later and is giving the sport of geocaching a bad name which im sure none of us want.

  4. i think they just hit the nail on the head, "why should i log them?" attitude. surely if everyone logged their dnf's those who come after them will be warned and if the cache is missing then the cache owner can get out earlier to replace the container for more to find.

  5. tomtoms have an accuracy of 10 metres, they also have a program written into them that locates you and puts you on the nearest road. You position could be 20 metres to the left of the road but the software is written to take into account of accuracy and places you on the nearest road.

To put geocaches onto the said device you will need GSAK, load in the PQ and choose to export into a tomtom poi file format. It will show on the tomtom, but it wont give you the excellent accuracy of a handheld gps or even the battery life of one.

I have cache poi's on my tomtom, but soon as im near to it i will use a gpsr to find it.

    hope that helps.

  6. i log all dnf's, it might be i couldnt find it, too many muggles about or i didnt have the right footwear to get it from the middle of the stream. It might be a case i have searched every possible place and its not there.

I dont see logging dnf's as hurting your count, it if anything shows that you might have found 20 that day but actually you have tried for 25 of which five you couldnt find.

I have noticed on a couple of my caches people dont log dnf's they might do all 9 of 10 on the circuit and one which they have to walk past isnt logged either as found or dnf (bet they did attempt it).

A log of DNF isnt bad, in my books it could be helpful to a cache owner as if 3 people in a week suddenly log it as dnf it gives the CO a warning that something is up, if all three dont log it then the CO will think nothing else of the cache, just wished a couple of my caches were logged as DNF earlier and i could have done something about them i.e. replace them or with one contact the tree surgeon which turns out was working on the tree my cache was in.

  7. from what i can gather its NOT how many you have done, its how active you are i.e. cache maintenance, dnf's as well as found. From what i can gather you can have 12000 finds, but if you have only found 5 this week and newbie comes along and finds 6 with a grand total of 6 then newbie will be above you.

  8. it also depends where in the world you are. a lot of batteries mentioned on this forum (and chargers) only seem to be available widely in the USA and not the UK. Here in the uk I use duracell 2650mah batteries which a pair will last most of the day in the cold and the whole day in the warm. I have 12 AA rechargeable, when i start on the last two pairs i will start the recharge process from the night i get home (4xAA straight away)and then four more on the following morning as we go out and the ones i use that day charged as soon as i get home (so all 12 are charged again).

I have heard the quicker the charger the more damage it does to the battery and a slower charger is best.

  9. nearly the end of month two and ours are standing at :72miles, 85 miles and 5301 miles. I keep reminding everyone there is 10 more months and the busy summer period which could end up making the currently furthest travelled one the least travelled one.
