  1. While you are waiting for the perfect implementation, how about the option from the www.geocaching.com Page. You can scroll down to Check out the recent logs and have a list of Recent Logs (last 200) to choose from. Let me try a link to that and see what happens: This is a great launching point if you're just looking to browse the incoming logs. Edit: Make note to take typing lessons so I will be faster than sTeamTraen
  2. This might not have been of any interest to anyone but me, but what the heck. When I marked a waypoint for the very first time on my GPS MAP76S it was auto-numbered 001 Of course you can manually rename it to a text name for clarity, but if you just want to quickly save a series of points you can keep accepting them as 002, 003,004,005, etc. For clarity you can rename them to text later. The next Waypoint you create will auto-number to 006 If you want to reset the auto-number sequence, create a Waypoint. Renumber it to 001. Save it. Then delete it. The next Waypoint will auto-number to 001
  3. jeffrey12000 Posted on May 10 2005, 03:25 PM It's not at all unusual to find a Cache with contact information for the Cache Owner, complete with Phone Number.
  4. So you're saying the solution is to put up a very high fence and keep EVERYBODY out? Forever!
  5. This is a question that will never die. But if you have to ask which setting you need, you don't need to worry about it. But I would like to address some "information" posted in this thread. Spencersb Posted on May 10 2005, 11:39 AM There are NO definitive rules. There can only be LOCAL rules, that do not apply to most people in a widely dispersed audience. Here is a Year 2000 World Magnetic Declination Flux Line Chart theprospectors Posted on May 10 2005, 12:15 PM Amen to that Brother. At a 50' Radius, a Circle has a Circumference of about 314' 1.91" making each degree of rotation about .87266' of arc on the Circumference. Thus .87266' times 11° = about 9.6' And don't forget that Magnetic Declination also shifts over time. If you are using a Magnetic Compass with a 30 year old map, you must take that into consideration and not just rely on the Magnetic Declination indicated on the map. Here is a Geographic Magnetic Calculator you can download (and use off line).
  6. Moose Mob Posted: Apr 16 2005, 12:49 PM What if you are using a Laptop and don't have a numeric keypad?
  7. Actually they said GPS Transceiver That would exclude the Etrex GPSr. But it doesn't matter. What a wasted hour. I can't believe I taped that carp.
  8. Make sure to check the box beside: Exclude hidden/found items from results That will exclude any Caches you have Hidden, Caches You have Found, and any Caches you have designated as Ignore.
  9. But if it really bothers gnbrotz, and posting a new log is the solution. Just post a new bogus log, and then delete it? Page updated, right?
  10. dropped down a whole ? I thought that was wlohe
  11. This post is about Batteries in a Cache. Please continue reading. While reading through the Forums today I noticed something relevant to this Thread in another one that was seemingly unrelated. That thread is discussing Goecaching Policies in Parks. The OP gave an example of an Anti-Geocaching Policy. Here is a Link to that Thread: My E-mail To Mn Tourism & Dnr, regarding no geocaches in MN State Parks Another poster provided a much more enlightened Florida Policy. Here is a link to that Post: The portion of the Florida State Park procedures manual related to geocaching But here is the germane part of that Florida Policy: Geocaches may not be placed in state parks without verbal permission by the Park Manager. Caches should not be buried, should not contribute to trail-blazing, should not be placed in an active burn zone, and should not be in areas where access is prohibited or discouraged (e.g., dunes, archaeological sites, or sensitive areas). No toxic or explosive substances, including batteries, lighters, matches, aerosol cans, etc., should be included in a cache. How common is this NO BATTERIES policy? We all know that many people ignore the NO POCKET KNIVES guideline, because they don't agree with it. Do we also turn an equally blind eye to NO BATTERIES policies, because we don't like them either?
  12. First off, I will point out that your question is somewhat mis-stated (even though we understand what you meant). UTM is a coordinate system (expressed as coordinates). WGS84 is a Datum (a mathematical model representating the shape of the Earth). There are lots of Coordinate Systems (Lat/Long being a quite popular alternative to UTM). Remember, there are many more. There are many Datums (NAD27 is a popular alternative to WGS84). Again these are just two examples of many available. Tahosa is correct that you can use your GPSr to convert to and from any combination of Coordinate Sysyems and Datums. But let's just list the possibilities for the examples I discussed above. 1. UTM in WGS84 to UTM in NAD27 2. UTM in WGS84 to LAT/LONG in WGS84 3. UTM in WGS84 to LAT/LONG in NAD27 4. Any of those 3 examples back to UTM in WGS84 5. LAT/LONG in WGS84 to LAT/LONG in NAD27 and back again if necessary. And all those different ways of representing this information, all point to exactly the same location. And during all this conversion, nothing actually changes inside the GPSr. The only thing that changes is the way the information is displayed on the GPSr screen. There is a program named GeoCalc that was written by a fellow Geocacher (fizzymagic) and made available for our use. Thanks Fizzy! It can be downloaded to your computer, and be run offline. It will do Coordinate Conversion (in the WGS84 Datum), but not Datum Conversion. The interface is quite intelligent. Just experiment with it. Here is an interesting (milti Datum) Lat/Lon, UTM, Magnetic Declination Calculator that you can download (Free) and run offline. It does all calculations in real time (You don't have to hit a Calculate Button). Change 1 digit and everything updates. Geographic Magnetic Calculator
  13. This is an option that you can use if the need arises, or ignore if you don't need it. Many GPS units (Garmins for example) can only be set to 1 Coordinate System and 1 Datum at a time. If I (a Garmin user) want to make full use of an NAD27 Map while searching for a WGS84 Cache, I have to take that into consideration and adapt. You could set up the Primary with the Cache data of Lat/Long and WGS84. You could set up the Secondary to match a UTM NAD27 Map, and keep track of both simultaneously. But if you don't need that, just forget about it. Answers To Similar Question (with some confusion thrown in that you can ignore) Pay particular attention to posts by Curious George and EScout.
  14. After observing this problem for a few weeks, I can now shed some light on my problem. There are two major factors that contributed to this. #1> Slow Dialup. #2> Limited Paitence, when I didn't realize it was required. As soon as I can see the Index Page (even though it is actually still loading) I can click on View New Posts. Works great. You MUST wait for the Index to load 100% before touching My Assistant. But if I do wait, it does work. That must be why I could get it to work on a less busy (faster loading) page.
  15. Did this search for you. The thread I found asked for an entire State in one PQ download. You already understand that is not going to happen. Just concentrate on the parts where instructions are provide how to get the information in batches without overlap. Sounds like exactly what you asked for. This Recent Thread Should Give Insight For Your Question
  16. After 16 finds of varying type and dificulty in 3 States you don't seem all that "New" to me. There was a similar thread earlier today with lots of good advice given. I will find and include that Link. But I am going to ask you basically the same thing I put to the other poster. After a bit of time between Caches, check your GPSr to verify it is set to WGS84. edit: Found and added Link: Similar Topic With Lots Of Good Advice
  17. I checked your profile. Discounting your lone (1/1) Virtual, the other 5 are D\T combinations of 1.5 and 2 (not urban micro's). All the suggestions you have received should apply to this type of hide. So since you have already found some fairly well hidden Caches, has anything changed? Have you checked to be sure your GPSr is still set to WGS84?
  18. That's 100 finds over a 22 State Area. And to save you the trouble, I ONLY have 38 finds in one State.
  19. NFA Posted on Apr 28 2005, 12:57 PM Well since I couldn't see that Icon either, I might be deaf too. Could you make it a LOUD one? In my opinion this post is only mildy sarcastic. But I figure if you can dish it out, you can take it too.
  20. Stunod beat me to posting an Icon ............. But I Found A BIGGER Icon And I knew exactly where to look for it, because it was posted for my benefit. edit: had to fix my Link
  21. As Mrs. Car54 has stated, the Indiana Legislature is looking at a change to their particular version of Daylight Saving Time. But that still leaves Arizona, Hawaii, and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa not observing DST but instead staying on "standard time" all year long. Also there is a U.S. wide effort to extent DST an additional 2 months (start 1 month earlier, end 1 month later). I hope someone remembers to tell Bill Gates. U.S could extend daylight savings time for two months And as KA pointed out "this is an international forum" "A trip around the world reveals that time isn't a synchronized science"
  22. That Link leads to a thread where the last post is by you, and it says: "sorry found it . Thanks any way!!" I guess you're good to go. If so you might want to consider closing this thread.
  23. Actually Sax's " Longitude Antipode solution is often used as an example when the starting point is in Integer Degrees. You actually have to determine what location is Exactly 180° Degrees away. And you must remember that the numbers are on opposite sides of a Zero Point. One of them is really a Negative Number. And yes, for Latitude just reverse the N and S. E106° 37.144' and W74° 37.144' are 181° 14.288' apart. That an error of 1° 14.288' It would be easier for most people to think of 74° 37.144' as 74.61907° 180 - 74.61907 = 105.38093 or 105° 22.856' E105° 22.856' and W74° 37.144' are 180° apart. So the Antipode of N42° 08.992' W074° 37.144' is S42° 08.992' E105° 22.856'
  24. Three Lost Guys Posted on Apr 26 2005, 11:26 PM Actually, that is not correct. Scotts Run Mystery Cache is an Unknown (Mystery) Cache. And you enjoyed it very much: "Best challenge we've met so far. Thanks!" Here from one of the Site FAQ's is an overview of Mystery or Puzzle Caches Notice these are described as the “catch-all” of Cache types, and as you can see, we call them by several different names. And in the interest of full disclosure, I have not figured one out yet.
