  2. I had been thinking about it for awhile. but this post finally prompted me to sign up for Premium Membership. Speed costs money! Actually my Dial Up connection never noticed a problem, but now I don't feel guilty for slowing the rest of you down. Question. How much bandwidth percentage do the Avatars, Signatures, Smilies, Ect take up. If it was a noticable inprovement, how would you feel about turning these features off during Peak Usage Periods till the traffic subsides?
  3. Salvelinus @ Mar 1 2005, 02:48 PM Did anyone else catch the episode of A Great Day Outdoors on Berks Community Television (BCTV) last week. This is a Berks County Pennsylvania Cable Network dedicated to local programming, and staffed by volunteers. They visited the: Fishermans Lure They left a few Fishing related trade items and signed the Log Book, but have not logged the visit on the GC web site. When you read the Log Book, look for an entry signed by Roger, Bob, and Dave. Judging from the logs they were reading off of a copy of the Cache Page, they were there the last Quarter of 2004. They also were walking on Railroad Tracks, but still ........... Their web site makes no metion of the Geocaching episode at this point, but they might in the future. They do advertise that tapes are available if you can identify an episode that interests you. A Great Day Outdoors TV Show Link
  4. Mister_X Posted on Mar 2 2005, 10:39 AM Specifically on the GARMIN GPSMAP 76S version 3.20, because it is the only one I own, you can "customize" the data you choose to display on the different Screens, except the Sattelite ( GPS Information ) Page. I must assume other Garmin units also allow you to choose which types of data will best serve your needs. But first you are asked to choose the SIZE of the Rows. Your choices are SMALL, MEDIUM. and LARGE. What you are really choosing is Small, Medium, or Large FONT SIZE - and you need a bigger box for a bigger font (There are also several choices for how many COLUMNS of data will be put in place). Apparently the Location information WILL NOT fit into a SMALL box. So if that was your choice, you won't even see ANY Location option when you scall through the list. But if you go for the MEDIUM or LARGE box, it will magically reappear. And you can have Lat/Lon available on any Screen/Page you wish. Warning: It's still too small to read easily because they stack the two numbers on top of each other. LATITUDE and LONGITUDE could have been split out into seperate categories so they would be in their own individual box in a larger font.
  5. Neo_Geo Posted on Mar 2 2005, 01:48 AM Obviously I was not clear enough in my criticism of the implementation of this Garmin "feature". Edited to indicate my knowledge of this phenomenon is limited to the GARMIN GPSMAP 76S version 3.20 Yes, absolutley. Use any format that works for you. But it was not immediatly clear to me exactly what Location (Lat/Lon) and Location (Selected) really meant. I tried to explain what the implications of choosing one over the other were EXACTLY. Cardinal Red Posted on Mar 2 2005, 12:39 AM If you have very good eyesight, or if you wear very good glasses you might not ever see the Location (Lat/Lon) and Location (Selected) options. It took me over a year to find them. If you select SMALL Rows during Setup Page Layout those options are NOT DISPLAYED IN THE SELECTION LIST. You MUST choose MEDIUM or LARGE Rows in order for the LOCATION (Lat/Lon) or LOCATION (Selected) options to even be displayed in the selection list. There are many times in the Windows operating system that an option is not viable under certain conditions. The classic solution is to GREY OUT that option. You can SEE that it's there, but clearly understand that you can't choose it right now. And how many other users never even knew this was there because of this. Was I the only one?
  6. Vaoden Posted on Feb 24 2005, 12:30 AM I obviously always used the Drop Down Menu instead of the Save Icon. This Icon method works just as you advertised. But I can't believe Adobe programmed it that way. Also, now that I have the PDF file saved to Disk, Garmin has the informatiom "Protected" preventing it being resaved as TEXT (which I could SEARCH). Why must they do this ?
  7. GARMIN GPSMAP 76S version 3.20 Have you have ever wanted to see your Location (Lat/Long, UTM, ect. ) on any Screens OTHER THAN the Sattelite ( GPS Information ) Page. If you only choose SMALL Rows during Setup Page Layout you will NEVER see this. You MUST choose MEDIUM or LARGE Rows in order for the LOCATION (Lat/Lon) or LOCATION (Selected) options to be displayed. Location (Lat/Lon) will always be in HDD:MM.mmm format. If you have the GPSr set to display ANY OTHER format (UTM for example) the Location (Selected) option will display that. This is a very poorly implimented feature. Even Bill Gates has enough sense to only Grey out choices that are not currently available, instead of just having them vanish.

  10. GARMIN GPS MAP 76S version 3.20 When the Unit is powered up you see the "Garmin" Screens. If you just wait patiently till you get a "lock", you will be taken to the Map Screen. If you wanted to watch the Satelite Acquisition process, you must PAGE away from the "Garmin" Screens to the Satelite Screen. But, as soon as you get a "lock", you are taken back to the Map Screen. That really used to Frost me. But, when you PAGE away from the "Garmin" Screens, just go past the Satelite Screen 1 time. Then whatever Screen you stop at, will stay in place when a "lock" is acquired. I generally PAGE to the Satelite Screen the 2nd time and watch the show. I get a lock, but can still keep an eye on it while waiting for the ACCURACY to improve.
  11. Several families of newer Garmin GPSr Units have similar feature sets. If you think you have discovered something that is undocumented (or not common knowledge) in a GARMIN Unit, post it here. Include the specific Unit(s) you discovered this information on. Also include the Software Version # you are on. This idea started with an old post I stumbled across in this Forum. It was lost for a long time, and now I can't find it again. But I re-posted it somewhere as a follow up answer to a Format Conversion question. The value of the information was confirmed when another member commented how helpful the information was. Here it is again to start this topic: GARMIN GPSMAP 76S version 3.20 On the Satelite Screen, you can just "Toggle" between two coordinate systems by tapping on the Rocker Key in any direction. One caveat. It "toggles" between whatever coord system you have your unit set to display, and HDD:MM.mmm If the unit is already set to display HDD:MM.mmm you won't notice any difference.
  12. Vaoden Posted on Feb 22 2005, 06:55 PM Here is a link to Click on to "Download" the GPS MAP76 Manual. Revision C 10/04 (1.08 MB) It is PDF and requires Adobe Reader 5.0+ I tried one time to actually SAVE the Manual, but didn't have any luck. But you can at least VIEW it. Also I can't do a WORD SEARCH on this PDF Document, which is a MAJOR inconvenience. GPS MAP 76 Manual Download Link

  15. Vaoden Posted on Feb 20 2005, 06:03 PM I hate to try and defend that crummy manual, and I don't know how old your manual is. But, the 2004 GPSMAP 76 manual on the Garmin web site covers Average Location on page 11. My GPSMAP76S manual copyrighted in 2002, covers it on page 33. The catch is there is nothing in the Table Of Contents, and the Appendix just groups it under Waypoint Pages Options. And yes, I only found it by trial and error and went back to scour the manual looking for it.
  16. This thread is also about a Printing problem that is Friendly / Non-Friendly sensitive. They even think they figured out why. At least worth a read. Possible "Friendly" - "Non-Friendly" explaination
  17. baajr24 Posted on Feb 20 2005, 07:00 PM I don't know anything about your Geco, other than it sounds old. I am sure any modern GPS will allow you to do what you want. But what you will find is the ability to "MARK" a location. But before you save the "MARK" you will be able to edit it. You just modify where you are to where you want to be, then Save. This will probably be even easier than starting from scratch. You will probably be near enough to the Waypoint you want to "ENTER", that the correct Hemisphere's and Integer portions of the Degrees will already be what you need. The only thing you would have to edit are the Minutes and Decimal Minutes. I understand that you have read all about needing a Data Port to download GPX Files. That is a choice more "serious" cachers make. I have never done that. Would not even know how. Because I don't need to. I scan the listings. Print out a few Cache pages for a particular area. Key in the coords by Editing MARKS, and search for one or two and go home. Sounds like just what you have in mind. And someone will tell you that the less expensive units don't have maps. So what. Nice for someone that decides they want it, but not absolutley necessary.
  18. HHL Posted on Feb 19 2005, 11:43 PM That is EXACTLY what you SHOULD be able to do. Sadly this is a crippled feature on Garmin, and Miles is the only option (and don't forget Meters either). Actually on a Garmin GPS Map76S I can do 2 Decimal Points, but that's still 52.8 Feet. Not good enough. And don't forget, NO DECIMAL POINTS on the Degree entry.
  19. This has come up before and there is a thread open right now. We need to keep bringing this to the attention of ALL GPS vendors (not just Garmin). Actually if one adopts more decimal points, that should put more pressure on the others. Current thread on same topic
  20. And speaking of solving FUEL YOUR PARANOIA, I have not spent too much time looking at it. But the one clue I did find sent me straight to the Dictionary. Don't you just love new words?
  21. fly46 Posted on Feb 19 2005, 10:34 PM There are infinite Number System possibilities. If you wanted a Base 100 system for example, all you would need are 100 Unique Value Designators (a Base 10 equivalent of 0 to 99). A common (to computer programmers) system in use right now is Base 16 (HEX). After using 0 through 9 you continue with A, B,C,D,E, and F (corresponding Base 10 values are 10 through 15). Another big advantage of Hexidecimal (HEX) is that is very easy to convert between Base 2 and Base 16 in your head. Same is true between Base 2 and Base 8 (OCT). If you look at the Scientific Calculator built into Windows you will notice it is fluent in 4 Number Systems. HEX (16), DEC (10), OCT (8), and BIN (2)
  22. Honestly, I still have not figured out how to make GeoCalc work. I have used: Great Circle Distance and Projection Calculators The top Calculator will provide distances between points in several Datums and several Units of measure. The bottom Calculator has the same Datum and Unit options for Projections.
  23. Will+Bill Posted on Feb 19 2005, 04:10 PM The above post claiming linkage to FUEL YOUR PARANOIA certainly does not. But instead appears to point to an archived invitation only cache at HQ.
