  1. Allez Comp Posted on Apr 5 2005, 01:51 AM Have you considered a small number of Premium Member Caches to see what happens? I would hope that solves the problem, but it would be an interesting experiment.
  2. I personally agree with you. But the Cache Owner has total discretion. Since this is NOT a competition, we are not harmed when someone else doesn't play by the same "rules" we set for ourselves.
  3. What about Dog Biscuits? I have read about them being removed because they were moisture soaked. But do they have a scent that couldl attract unwanted attention?
  4. I think the Title of this topic was intended to read "Changing Coordinates On My Cache" There are limitations on how far an owner can move the coordinates on one of their Caches. Updating Coordinates On Cache Page Info
  5. That's very brave to pull our leg like that and still list your home coordinates.

  7. Mudfrog Posted on Mar 31 2005, 11:19 AM The idea of averaging is to leave the unit stationary and collect multiple solutions and average them to obtain a better answer. QUOTED from "A GPS User Manual" by Dale DePriest I own a Garmin GPS Map76S. On the Averaging Screen there is a Data Box labled MEASUREMENT COUNT. A Google search tells me this term has been a "Feature" in the Garmin line for some time. During auto-averaging the MEASUREMENT COUNT reflects the number of "Solutions" collected, at the rate of 1 per second. If Satellite reception is lost during the auto-averaging procedure, the COUNT is frozen. If reception is re-acquired the COUNT resumes. I don't know what the max COUNT obtainable is when energized by a Power Cable, but a pair of AA Batteries die before it is reached. During an experiment started with nearly new Batteries, I obtained a COUNT in excess of 30,000 and then changed the Batteries again.
  8. Had never heard of RAR. How many of you have the software to decompress RAR ? Even if this is better than ZIP how long could this take to gain widespread acceptance ? RAR (file format) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. (Redirected from WinRAR) In computing, RAR (pronounced Rare or letter by letter) is a compressed archive format developed by Eugene Roshal. His main product is WinRAR, which is shareware. Pocket RAR, a version of the RAR archiver for the Pocket PC platform, is available as freeware. Eugene Roshal was born March 10, 1972 in Russia, graduated from Chelyabinsk technical university. He has also released source code for decoding RAR archives, under a licence that allows free distribution and modification, but forbids its use to build a compatible encoder. The encoding method is held to be proprietary. One of the advantages of the RAR format is that it excels at producing split volumes. Few other compression formats have the ability not only to process volumes, but do it well. The most notable such format, before the advent of RAR, was ARJ. Another advantage of the RAR format is its encryption capabilities. RAR encryption is very strong, and while a fast computer could try several million passwords per second on other archive formats, it could only try a few thousand on an encrypted RAR file. The file extension is .rar. The MIME-Type is application/x-rar-compressed.

  11. Assuming you bumped this back up because you are looking for the same thing as the OP. Where can I find arerial photos online with coordinates that follow the cursor? Try this: Terraserver.com
  12. sTeamTraen Posted on Mar 30 2005, 06:08 PM It's not even totaly dependent on distance. If you were to completely reverse your perspective on the two locations in sTeamTraen's OP, it would appear logical. To do that: Set your home coordinates to be the same as: Avocados are good, too. GCN5BX Set your sights toward the Cache nearest to sTeamTraen's home coordinates: Grand Ventron GCGJVK The GC website will tell you the direction is NE. Totaly logical. So my untested theory is that if you have two persons at significantly distant locations: The one nearest the Equator will see the GC Directional information as quite logical, despite the distance.
  13. I did not set this as my title, I swear! I don't know who did but it was obviously someone "higher" up.... LOL (I'm serious) That's funny. Wish I could find out the details behind how/why that happened. But you can change it if you have not grown fond of it by now. Recent Very Good Explination How To Change Avatar Text (Forum Title)
  14. BalkanSabranje Posted on Mar 30 2005, 04:16 PM Yes. I was only concentrating on what must be the explination for a very confusing contradiction. So the current system that works fine for LOCAL Caches, can be flat out WRONG on a Global Scale. Even though there is a fancy technical explination for why it is not wrong. This will never be a problem in practical use.
  15. Markwell Posted on Mar 30 2005, 01:10 PM I had an issue with the number (41.362°) as soon as I saw it. But the correct answer made even less sense, so I continued to investigate. 41.362° is the Azimuth only if TEXAS is the starting point. The actual number is about 300° Azimuth (North West). Yes I can hear you loud and clear. NO WAY. That's not the 180° opposite direction (180°+ 41°= 221°) we ALL were expecting. Yes that includes me. Take a look at this Graphic Great Circle Calculator And make sure you take notice of this section: Course and Bearing Course from origin is the bearing one must travel when leaving the origin to begin the Great Circle route. On a Great Circle route the course normally* constantly changes throughout the journey. Traditionally ocean navigators recalculated their course every 12 hours whilst the auto-pilots on modern aircraft do so continously. This calculator recomputes the course every 200km (approximately). I was contacted by muslim gentleman who had plotted the route to Mecca and was concerned that this was the direction he should face when praying - not so. *The course will not vary along the route when both points are on either the equator (east-west), or the same line of longitude (north-south). So when you follow a Great Circle Path, it is possible the initial course is North even when the destination is South. Wow. Comments anyone?
  16. Steinar, Bergen Posted on Mar 30 2005, 04:00 AM The file description ? The information you are referring to is currently the File Name. I have placed a photo and tried to give it a VERY long File Name, but it is was clipped to about 50 characters. I worked with the limits the best I could. It's something probably very few people will view anyhow. Just a simple tribute to a unique individual. I am curious what you are trying to accomplish. Perhaps just editing the original file name as long as possible before uploading will solve your problem.

  19. flask Posted on Mar 28 2005, 09:36 PM Is this an example of "New Math" ?
  20. alansfreed Posted on Mar 29 2005, 08:41 PM Well, obviously that's not going to happen. Also you should know that your drawing is NOT complete. There is a missing line about 45 Foot long not indicated, and the "Box" doesn't close. If you are willing to: #1 do more research to identify the missing information #2 get a GPS Coordinate from ANY corner #3 find out how old the data is I can give you enough information to at least search for any possible remnents of markers. But it reallly sounds like your friend needs a Professional Surveyor.
  21. alansfreed Posted on Mar 29 2005, 03:43 PM Yes these numbers are standard Surveyor Data. Note: I am NOT a Surveyor. I will check the numbers to see how well "the Box closes". In other words, do those numbers fit together. Then you would need to provide 1 GPS Coordinate on the end of one of those lines. Preferably on a corner. Then because those Degree, Minute, ans Second numbers are based on Magnetic North, I would need to know how old those numbers are (Because Magnetic Declination changes over time). Read this thread about the last time I responded to an identical question. Read all the warnings about why you should really hire a Professional Surveyor if this has to stand up to legal scrutiny. Read about all the accuracy limitations which will only make the answer an ESTIMATE. The information I provided to the poster in the Link below has not been field tested. I anticipate a report this summer. Exact Same Question I Answered Previously Even before I get this posted I see you are already being advised you will NOT get professional results. Are you looking for an EXPENSIVE professional result, or a FREE educated guess?
  22. Moose Mob Posted on Mar 28 2005, 06:09 PM Basic Member able to log MOC "Loophole" I have not needed to figure this out, but it can be done. Perhaps a PM to one of the knowledgeable posters in the Link provided if you need more details.
  23. gemini2131 Posted on Mar 28 2005, 06:03 PM In it's simplest form you do NOT need anything except the information off a Cache Page to play this game. If you want to be able to track Hundreds of Caches in a certain area, (and possibly filter certain types out), there is software available to assist you. Several posts will follow with helpful advice.
  24. briansnat Posted on Mar 28 2005, 05:22 PM My Electronic Compass GPSr was only about $100 more than the unit without it. Have always been glad I have it. While the actual Electronic Compass always knows where it is, the directional GOTO arrow can ocassionally get confused (nothing's perfect I guess). Just take several steps till it comes back to it's senses and then it will continue to work while you are standing still.
